Dear friends in Christ, I wish and pray that you are all in good health and at peace as you read this reflection for the liturgy of the Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time. Welcome to the first Sunday of the month of February. The liturgy of the Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time conveys a message of hope and joy knowing that our mission to spread the gospel is without limit. Our mission goes out to all the world in good times and in bad. And I would say, it is even more pressing a task in bad times like what we are experiencing at this time of pandemic. The gospel of Mark says: Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who are with him pursued him and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come”. So, he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee. [Mk. 1: 35-39] Reflecting on this gospel passage, I realize that our mission of sharing the good news to all is exemplified by Jesus himself when he tells his disciples that his purpose is to be with the rest of community. Jesus cannot be bound to a single place or race. He is meant to be with people of all walks of life. For him there is no distinction between Jews and gentiles. For him, all people are subject to God’s offer of life and love that he brings. That is why he needs to move on and be with the people all over the place as far as he can reach. That is the purpose of his coming into the world. What is the purpose of your life? What is the reason why you exist? Why do you do what we do in life? What is the goal of your life as an individual in relation to your community of faith? Maybe when you can seriously answer these questions, that you can also find the true meaning of your existence. You are here for a purpose. It is up to you to find for yourself the reason why you are here. I believe when you find the reason for your being in this world, you can also make sense of the fact that it is in your nature as a faithful believer in Christ, to find meaning in life. I believe I have found mine in Jesus the Christ. He is the reason why I exist. I exist for his own purpose. He is the reason why I do what I do. Have you found yours? It is never too late to seek the truth about yourself. If you have not yet found the reason of your existence, try having a serious personal relationship with Jesus. He will lead you to the truth because he IS the TRUTH himself.
Today we celebrate the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Church uses the liturgy to clarify the characteristics of its ministry to humanity. Christian communities must be on the sidelines of the arrival of the kingdom of God. Like Job in our First Reading, we are running out of time to work. The days of light and movement are short and the nights of darkness and patience very long. An instant for God, unfold like moments burned between us. As in the case of Job, our best gift seems to be hope, our worst affliction is despair. Saint Paul reminds the seventy-five Christians of Corinth that they have received the Gospel from him without spending anything, only to free them with the same evangelical freedom that he enjoys. Christ is the risen and living Gospel. In Jesus we all live the new covenant of justice, love and compassion with God. Paul will continue to be weak with the weakest and strong with the strongest. Your own reward is that you be the Good News for others. In the Third Reading he puts us on the train of Jesus' activities in Galilee. For the benefit of the kingdom of God, Jesus goes from place to place, and impresses the first disciples with his heal- ing effect on the people. He heals all of their fragmentation, exclusion and immobility. Bring the afflicted into the kingdom of God. He approaches everyone with the same definition of his mis- sion. There is no God but the Israelite God, whole, present in history. God is pure action. There will be no strength that is not weakened or weakness that is not strengthened before this God. And now that? Here we stand twenty centuries after Jesus doubting our commitment. In Saint Mark, Jesus tells us: we go to neighboring towns to preach there too. It is not the miracles but the message that interests Jesus. The Word of God already resides in us and seeks its expression among all of us to make us persons, family and community. Have we awakened to the dawn of this new age of Christ? What is the Good News preached by us? Do we preach what Jesus and Saint Paul preached? What are the wonders that we do in the name of God? What have we done to replace the evil spirits with the one animating Spirit of God? By asking ourselves these questions, the answers can be surprising. Perhaps we will need to change more than the neighbors. Perhaps we have forgotten how to live on the fringes of the world where everything changes and the kingdom of God arrives.
Queridos amigos en Cristo, deseo y ruego que todos gocen de buena salud y paz al leer esta reflexión para la liturgia del quinto domingo del tiempo ordinario. Bienvenidos al primer domingo del mes de febrero. La liturgia del Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario transmite un mensaje de esperanza y alegría sabiendo que nuestra misión de difundir el evangelio no tiene límites. Nuestra misión sale a todo el mundo en las buenas y en las malas. Y yo diría que es una tarea aún más urgente en tiempos difíciles como la que estamos viviendo en este momento de pandemia. El evangelio de San Marcos dice: Levantándose muy temprano antes del amanecer, se fue y se dirigió a un lugar desierto, donde rezó. Simón y los que estaban con él lo persiguieron y al encontrarlo le dijeron: "Todos te buscan". Les dijo: “Vayamos a las aldeas cercanas para que yo también predique allí. Para esto he venido”. Entonces, fue a sus sinagogas, predicando y expulsando demonios por toda Galilea. [Mc 1: 35-39] Al reflexionar sobre este pasaje del evangelio, me doy cuenta de que nuestra misión de compartir las buenas nuevas a todos está ejemplificada por el mismo Jesús cuando les dice a sus discípulos que su propósito es estar con el resto de la comunidad. Jesús no puede estar atado a un solo lugar o raza. Está destinado a estar con personas de todos los ámbitos de la vida. Para él, no hay distinción entre judíos y gentiles. Para él, todas las personas están sujetas a la oferta de vida y amor de Dios que él trae. Es por eso que necesita seguir adelante y estar con la gente de todo el lugar hasta donde pueda llegar. Ese es el propósito de su venida al mundo. ¿Cuál es el propósito de su vida? ¿Cuál es la razón por la que existes? ¿Por qué haces lo que haces en la vida? ¿Cuál es el objetivo de su vida como individuo en relación con su comunidad de fe? Tal vez cuando puedas responder en serio a estas preguntas, también puedas encontrar el verdadero significado de tu existencia. Estás aquí con un propósito. Depende de usted encontrar por sí mismo la razón por la que está aquí. Creo que cuando encuentras la razón por la que estás en este mundo, también puedes entender el hecho de que está en tu naturaleza como un fiel creyente en Cristo, encontrarle sentido a la vida. Creo que he encontrado el mío en Jesucristo. Él es la razón por la que existo. Existo para su propio propósito. Él es la razón por la que hago lo que hago. ¿Has encontrado el tuyo? Nunca es demasiado tarde para buscar la verdad sobre uno mismo. Si aún no ha encontrado la razón de su existencia, intente tener una relación personal seria con Jesús. Él te conducirá a la verdad porque él ES la VERDAD en sí mismo. Que así sea.
Hoy celebramos el Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. La Iglesia utiliza la liturgia para aclarar las características de su ministerio a la humanidad. Las comunidades cristianas deben estar al margen de la llegada del reino de Dios. Como a Job en nuestra Primera Lectura, se nos va el tiempo de trabajar. Los días de luz y movimiento son cortos y las noches de oscuridad y paciencia muy largas. Un instante para Dios, se desarrollan como momentos quemados entre nosotros. Como en el caso de Job, nuestro mejor don parece ser la esperanza, nuestra peor aflicción es la desesperación. San Pablo recuerda a los setenta y cinco cristianos de Corinto que ellos han recibido el Evangelio de él sin gastar nada, sólo para liberarlos con la misma libertad evangélica de que él goza. Cristo es el Evangelio resucitado y vivo. En Jesús todos vivimos la nueva alianza de justicia, amor y compasión con Dios. Pablo seguirá siendo débil con los más débiles y fuertes con los más fuertes. Su propia recompensa es que sea la Buena Nueva para los demás. En la Tercera Lectura nos sube al tren de las actividades de Jesús en Galilea. Para el beneficio del reino de Dios, Jesús va de lugar en lugar, e impresiona a los primeros discípulos con su efecto sanador en el pueblo. El sana todos de su fragmentación, exclusión e inmovilidad. Ya el Verbo de Dios reside en nosotros y busca su expresión entre todos para hacernos personas, familia y comunidad. ¿Hemos despertado con el amanecer de esta época nueva de Cristo? ¿Cuál es la Buena Nueva predicada por nosotros? ¿Predicamos lo que Jesús y San Pablo predicaban? ¿Cuáles son las maravillas que efectuamos en nombre de Dios? ¿Qué hemos hecho para reemplazar a los espíritus malos con el único Espíritu animador de Dios? Al hacernos estas preguntas, las respuestas pueden ser sorprendentes. Quizás nosotros necesitaremos cambiar más que los vecinos. Quizás se nos ha olvidado cómo vivir al margen del mundo en donde todo cambia y el reino de Dios llega.

Following the current orders from Governor Newsom and the directives from the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles, effective immediately, churches are allowed to do
worships services when it is done outdoors. In view of this, we are going to set up
our Sunday masses outdoors in our church parking lot.
