MD Anderson Research Project
Parent Consent Required for Participation
Dear Parents and Students,
Westside High School and HISD is participating in a social science research pro-
ject run by MD Anderson Cancer Center entitled, “Surgeons of the Future: do high
school students possess the personality traits and grit to train to be a surgeon?”
This is a population study that will compare the personality and grit traits between
current high school students and actively practicing surgeons. In the long term, the
primary investigator Dr. Mara Antonoff, an Associate Professor of Thoracic and
Cardiovascular Medicine, and researcher Lyndon Walsh are looking for ways to
develop pipeline programs for high school students leading into medicine.
The more participants we have, the better!
Who can participate?
• High school students ages 14-18
• Students with an internet connection (Laptop/Phone)
What does participation require?
After signing the parental consent waiver, please return it to Ms. Nassab
(Barbara.Nassab@houstonisd.org) via email. Your child will then receive an email
containing an electronic link allowing them to complete the survey.
How long does it take?
The survey takes no more than 10 minutes to complete.
What data will be taken?
The data is 100% anonymous and protected. Basic demographics information, per-
sonality traits, and grit traits will be collected.

Choir News By Ms. Douris
It is with great joy that I announce that Isaac
Smith scored 2nd in the Region on Sunday, plac-
ing him into the Region Choir that convenes in
November. His placement also advances him to
Pre-Area, which is one of two more successful
auditions required to be placed in the Texas All
State choir. We are in one of the most competi-
tive regions in this state, and I could not be more
proud of him. I am so thankful to his mother,
Emily Smith, for her unwavering support of her
son - and me!
Just another example of why it's a great (Sun)
day to be a wolf!
