Quick Explainer – Remote Learning Day
The Case for Remote Days – August 2020: 2020-2021 Back-to-School Guide for Families “While the scope of need is challenging to predict, we recognize that there will be a continued need (students needing to quarantine, possible mandated closures) for an online platform to deliver instruction during the 2020-2021 school year. “Maintaining a day of remote instruction for students allows for continued improvement in remote learning and will limit the disruptive nature of required quarantine and isolation of students due to COVID-19. “A four day in-person week provides the time for teachers to collaborate and plan to improve our remote instruction methods while also providing in-person instruction. “It allows us to plan for better sanitation while addressing the financial impact of COVID-19.”
2020-2021 Back-to-School Guide for Families “It is our hope that we can return to typical, in-person classes as soon as possible – we know this hybrid learning plan is not the desired destination for our school district. We absolutely understand the burden that these plans place on families, and we do not take that lightly. If there were any other way to protect public health in this crisis – the likes of which our country has not seen in over 100 years – we would not choose this plan.”
Hybrid Schedules Modified Master Schedule for HPI, PJHS and PHS • Shared staff between buildings • Planning time • Suspended exploratory elective classes • Elimination recess • Increased transition time between classes • Repurposed gym and music rooms for lunch • Reorganized intervention and related services to students
Protocols & Practices • Since August, teachers discuss and review assignments with students each Friday during class. • Lessons and activities are designed for students to complete independently or with a minimal amount of adult support. • When necessary, teachers and paraprofessionals provide additional support to students to complete their remote assignments. • Schoology folders have standardized across all subjects and both grade levels. • Each Monday, teachers collaborate to create lessons and activities to engage and front-load information for the upcoming week. When appropriate, students might be assigned an assessment.
Student Expectations – HPI Example • Assignments are posted each Friday after school. • Students have from 3:00 p.m. on Friday to Monday at midnight to complete their Remote Monday assignments for attendance purposes. • To receive attendance credit, a student simply must try or attempt to complete the task or assignment. • Students can utilize our Second Chance Protocol on Remote Monday assignments for grading purposes.
Example - What Happens at School on a Remote Monday? • Instructional & Team Planning to Accommodate in Person and Virtual Lessons • Conduct Various Meetings (Parent, Staff & Committee Meetings) • Set-up Schoology Folders and Resources for Upcoming Week • Prep for the Week Including the Creation of Videos and other Remote Lessons • Coordinate with COVID team and nurse on students out for week • Check-in or Meet with Individual Students and/or Families • Related Services (SLP, OT, PT, APE, ESL) • Complete Required Paperwork (IEPs, WEPs, ETRs, 504 Plans, etc.) • Professional Development shifted to all Mondays • Conferences w/PVA students as needed
Changes to expect with a 5-Day Schedule for the Remainder of the School Year • Significant loss of coordinated instructional planning with departments (HPI daily structure will not have it for remainder of the year). • Time for specifically-designed lessons and activities for quarantined students diminished. • Designated time for coordinated efforts to assist individual students and their families. • Loss of time to conference with PVA students.
Transition from 4-Day to 5-Day In-Person Week
HPI & PJHS Transition to 5-Day In Person Week • Monday, March 29 – HPI/PJHS return to 5-days a week. • This gives each school two weeks of operating under a 4-day week before break. • Spring break occurs March 22-26. • Provides team the week of spring break to work on logistics (HPI, PJHS and PHS). • Provides time to monitor COVID trends. • Teachers will be fully vaccinated by April 2.
PHS – Options to Consider Due to Required Testing •Federal and state legislation requires us to test students in specific classes: Algebra 1, Geometry, ELA 2, Biology, Government, and American History. •The same legislation also requires us to administer a college and career readiness assessment; we use the SAT. •Each end of course test has specific testing windows •The SAT has specific dates on which the test may be given, we have chosen Tuesday, April 27
PHS 4-Days Begins March 16: Option A - 5-Day Return on Monday, March 29 •Return to 5-days a week after break on Monday, March 29 but will need six 2-hour delays days to accommodate required state testing. •April 6 Government & Am. History •April 8 Biology •April 13 ELA 2, Part 1 •April 15 ELA 2, Part 2 •April 20 Alg 1, Part 1 & Geometry, Part 1 •April 22 Alg 1, Part 2 & Geometry, Part 2 SAT Administration on Tuesday, April 27 is school day for PHS juniors only. • Tuesday, April 27th (~420)
PHS 4-Days Begins March 16: Option B - 5-Day Return on Monday, April 26 State End of course tests on remote Mondays • April 5th Am.
