Term 3 Week 3 Page 3 ELEPHANTS TOOTHPASTE Year 10 Science Year 10 learning about decomposition reactions by making elephants toothpaste. In this reaction a catalyst is added to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to quickly break it down into water (H2O) and oxygen gas (O2). The large amounts of gas bubbles are trapped using detergent, with the resulting foam looking like toothpaste being squeezed out of a very large tube. FROM THE READING ROOM Year 7 student Jack recommends: Heart & Soul by Paul Gallen "Paul Gallen is a former professional Rugby League player who played as a Lock for the Cronulla Sharks. He represented NSW and Australia and won a State of Origin Series and captained the Sharks to their first ever Premiership. Paul is also a professional Boxer with a record of 11 wins, one loss and one draw. Heart and Soul explores the different stages of Paul's career and his memories about his childhood growing up in the Southern suburbs of Sydney. I found this book easy to read, encouraging and it has inspired me to be a better player and to aim for a career in professional Rugby League. I think other students who play Rugby League or are interested in boxing would enjoy reading this book." Email: wauchope-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au Website: http://www.wauchope-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

Term 3 Week 3 Page 6 MEDIA TEAM MAGIC A shout out to the students on our amazing Media Team, who have jumped fully into yearbook mode straight off the back of all that Cumberland coverage. The 2020/21 yearbook needs to be submitted to the printers at the end of this term. The push is on to get all pages completed by the deadline, but it is coming together well. If you have a piece of writing or art that could be featured in our yearbook, please talk to one of the Media Team students or Sarah in the library. P&C NEWS After two unsuccessful attempts, we have a P&C executive. Congratulations to Annette Cordell who remains as President, Secretary Jo-anne Heslin, and Treasurer Virginia Haynes. Thank you for taking up these positions, and for your contribution to our school community. Email: wauchope-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au Website: http://www.wauchope-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
Term 3 Week 3 Page 7 CAPTURED! Around & about WHS Important current advice from NSW Health regarding masks and face coverings: “While at school, masks or face coverings are strongly recommended in all indoor settings for: • all students in Year 7 and above • all staff in school settings.” In line with this advice we are encouraging our students and staff to wear a mask or face covering in indoor settings where it is difficult to physically distance. Why wear a mask, you ask? The research is clear: individuals with COVID-19 can be symptom free for up to five days, not realise they are carrying the virus and spread it to others. Wearing a mask reduces the chance you will COVID-19 to others, and it reduces the chance you will COVID-19 from others. Considering the advice, we respectfully ask our school community to assist us in encouraging the wearing of masks and face coverings at school. They help to protect us all when it is not possible to maintain the 1.5-metre physical distance. Our school has a ready supply of masks for any students who wish to access one. They are available in various locations around the school including the front office and gym. We thank you for your support in this matter. Term 3 Week 3 Page 8 AN IMPORTANT REMINDER FROM BUSWAYS There are currently no physical distancing restrictions on dedicated school bus services, however children over 12 years old are required to wear a face mask on public transport. Rest assured, no student will be turned away from public transport under any circumstance. Busways continues to ensure extra cleans of buses daily and follows all NSW Government's health advice. If you need further advice or would like to seek clarification, please visit the Transport for NSW website. For those parents who are concerned about their children vaping, there is an opportunity to participate in a free webinar facilitated by drug educator Paul Dillon (see below). Please note that this is not organised or endorsed by Wauchope High School. Email: wauchope-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au Website: http://www.wauchope-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
