Christ Crucified (c. 1632) by Diego Velázquez HOLY WEEK: GOOD FRIDAY Silence is kept prior to the Service.
CONCERNING GOOD FRIDAY The Paschal mystery—the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ—is at the heart of the Christian Gospel. The somber evening of Maundy Thursday began a single liturgy of several services which culminate with rejoicing on Easter Sunday. The liturgy continues tonight with our service for Good Friday. This most somber of all days is appropriately marked by fasting, abstinence, and penitence, leading us to focus on Jesus and the meaning of the Cross. The bare, stark appearance of the church serves as a reminder of the solemnity and the sorrow of the day. The Lord of Life was rejected, mocked, scourged, and then put to death on the Cross. The faithful are reminded of the role which their own sin played in this suffering and agony, as Christ took all sin upon himself, in obedience to his Father’s will. By the Cross we are redeemed, set free from bondage to sin and death. The Cross is a sign of God’s never-ending love for us. It is a sign of life, in the midst of death.
GOOD FRIDAY On this day the ministers enter in silence. All then sit or kneel for silent prayer. The Officiant rises and says OFFICIANT All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way, PEOPLE And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. The Officiant says Let us pray. Almighty God, we beseech you graciously to behold this your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed and given into the hands of sinners, and to suffer death upon the Cross; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LESSONS Isaiah 52:13 – 53:12 (ESV) Hebrews 10:1 – 25 (ESV) The People remain seated for the reading of the Passion Gospel lesson until the verse that mentions the arrival at Golgotha (John 19:17) when they stand. The customary responses before and after the Gospel are omitted. The Passion Gospel is announced in the following manner The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John. John 19:1 – 37 (ESV)
THE SERMON The Rev. Daniel Adkinson Rector, St. Thomas Anglican Church HYMNS OF REFLECTION Beautiful Scandalous Night Go on up to the mountain of mercy To the crimson perpetual tide Kneel down on the shore and be thirsty no more Go under and be purified Follow Christ to the holy mountain Sinner sorry and wrecked by the fall Cleanse your heart and your soul at the fountain that flows For you and for me and for all At the wonderful, tragic, mysterious tree On that beautiful scandalous night, you and me Were atoned by His blood and forever washed white On that beautiful scandalous night On the hillside you will be delivered At the foot of the cross justified And your spirit restored, by the river that pours From our blessed Savior's side CCLI Song # 1131836 - Derald Daugherty | Steve Hindalong © 1995 Never Say Never Songs, New Spring (Admin. by Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing, Inc) Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted Stricken, smitten, and afflicted, see Him dying on the tree! 'Tis the Christ by man rejected; yes, my soul, 'tis He, 'tis He! 'Tis the long-expected Prophet, David's Son, yet David's Lord; by His Son God now has spoken: 'tis the true and faithful Word. Tell me, ye who hear Him groaning, was there ever grief like His? Friends thro' fear His cause disowning, foes insulting His distress; many hands were raised to wound Him, none would interpose to save; but the deepest stroke that pierced Him, was the stroke that Justice gave.
Ye who think of sin but lightly, nor suppose the evil great here may view its nature rightly, here its guilt may estimate. Mark the sacrifice appointed, see who bears the awful load; 'tis the Word, the Lord's Anointed, Son of Man and Son of God. Here we have a firm foundation, here the refuge of the lost; Christ's the Rock of our salvation, His the name of which we boast. Lamb of God, for sinners wounded, sacrifice to cancel guilt! None shall ever be confounded, who on Him their hope have built. Text: Thomas Kelly c.1804 (Isaiah 53) Music: O MEIN JESU, ICH MUSS STERBEN c. 1850. CLOSING HYMN What Wondrous Love is This? What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul What wondrous love is this, O my soul What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of bliss To bear the dreadful curse for my soul To bear the dreadful curse for my soul When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down When I was sinking down, sinking down When I was sinking down, beneath God’s righteous frown Christ laid aside His crown for my soul Christ laid aside His crown for my soul To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing To God and to the Lamb, I will sing To God and to the Lamb, who is the great “I Am” While millions join the theme, I will sing While millions join the theme, I will sing And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be And through eternity, I’ll sing on And through eternity, I’ll sing on © Words: Public Domain, Music: Public Domain Alexander Means, William Walker. CCLI Song # 197297 GOOD FRIDAY ANTHEM All, saying together, We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world.
THE LORD’S PRAYER And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, we pray you to set your passion, Cross, and death between your judgment and our souls, now and in the hour of our death. Give mercy and grace to the living; peace and rest to the dead; to your holy Church unity and concord; and to us sinners everlasting life and glory; for with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God, now and for ever. Amen. When they are ready, all depart in Silence. The Paschal mystery—the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ—is at the heart of the Christian Gospel.
