OUTLOOK April 6, 2021 Volume 81 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF GLENDALE No. 7 Dear Glendale First Family of Faith, It is with a mixture of thankfulness and sadness that the Staff Parish Relations Committee informs you that Nancy Sulahian has resigned as Director of Music Ministries at Glendale First United Methodist Church, effective Easter Sunday, April 4th. Nancy has served GFUMC as our Director of Music Ministries for 30 years. We have indeed been blessed. To say that Nancy is an accomplished musician and choir director is to merely touch the surface of her dedication to providing the best possible musical worship service. Glendale First has rightly been known for its commitment to offering the highest quality musical programs. A corner stone of worshiping, music has always been a key aspect of our shared time together. The thoughtful, inspiring, uplifting, reflective, and always professional music offerings at GFUMC have enhanced and focused our services over many years. For those of you who would like to express your personal thanks for Nancy’s service to Glendale First and to offer good wishes for her future, there are several things that you can do: a. You can send your own email or letter/card of thanks to her through Glendale First UMC. Please drop it off at or mail it to 134 N. Kenwood St., Glendale, CA, 91206. b. For any who would want to make a monetary gift of love and thanksgiving to Nancy, you can do so by writing a check indicating NANCY SULAHIAN - LOVE OFFERING in the memo and sending it to Glendale First UMC or by making a gift through the church’s online giving account at https://glendalefirst.org/tithes-and-offerings. (*Please choose NANCY SULAHIAN - LOVE OFFERING under the FUND dropdown) Sincerely, Howard Fallman Chair, Staff Parish Relations Committee Glendale First United Methodist Church
OUTLOOK Page 2 Wednesday Morning Bible Study Who Is this Jesus? Exploring Jesus According to Luke As Christians we are called to be like Jesus Christ, but what exactly does this mean? In each of the Gospel accounts, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, were written at a different time, with a different target audience in mind, and for a different purpose? With these being our primary source of information about Jesus Christ, what of these teachings are still applicable to our lives today? On each of the Wednesdays in April, from 10:00am to 11:00am, we will be continuing this study of exploring the Gospel accounts to better understand the Jesus they present. In April we will be focusing on the Gospel according to Luke. If you were not able to be a part of the study for the Gospel according to Matthew, don’t worry, it is perfectly fine to join now. Wednesday Evening Bible Study Making Sense of the Bible in Our World Today As Christians, our primary tool for understanding God and Jesus Christ is the Bible. However, the Bible is a book which is composed of writings that are between 1,900 and 3,400 years old. These writings were written in cultures which no longer exist, and they were written in languages few if any of us speak. Understanding, interpreting, and apply the knowledge of the Bible to our vastly different world today is challenging at best. For six Wednesdays beginning April 7th, from 7:00pm to 8:15pm, we are going to be exploring the Bible, seeking better understand how it speaks to us and our world today. In this study, we are going to be using the book, Making Sense of the Bible by Rev. Adam Hamilton. You are encouraged to get a copy to fully participate in the study. The book is available through Amazon and other online book sellers. As we never want money to be a barrier to ministry, if you want to participate in the study but cannot afford a copy of the book, please contact Rev. Kris Tate through the church office for scholarship information. Finance Committee Update In March 2021 the church received notification the loan interest and principal in the amount of $192,745 was “Fully Forgiven” by the Small Business Administration (SBA). The cash proceeds of the loan were received in May of last year, during the Pandemic, and were used primarily to pay church payroll, including the Susanna Westly Children Center SWCC) employees when the church was closed in May, June and July of last year. This loan was made possible when the Federal Government passed the CARES Act last year and our church, as many other churches and nonprofits, applied for and received a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan in order to minimize employee layoffs. This loan program was administered by the SBA and will be reported as “Grant Income” in 2021 and not as a loan since we will not have to repay it. Fortunately, our church has not had to terminate any employees as a result of the Pandemic and the SWCC has now re-opened but at a lower enrollment to be in compliance with the new health requirements. Our Church has been blessed to receive the loan and now this “Forgiveness”. Bruce Hinckley Chair GFUMC Finance Committee
