Service of Commemoration for His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh Friday 16th April 2021 at Saint Giles Church, Matlock In the presence of The Mayor of Matlock Service to be Conducted by The Rev Father Benedict Mark Crowther-Alwyn Organist: Dr. Stephen Oxley
Welcome (Please stand) We have come together to remember the life of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. We give thanks for his long life, for the love that he received from Almighty God and showed among us. We recall with gratitude his devotion to duty, his service in the Royal Navy and his support for many causes. Now we pray that he may know the joys of your everlasting kingdom, where sorrow and pain are no more. Opening Hymn (Hymns will be sung by the choir, would the congregation please sit) 1 All my hope on God is founded; he doth still my trust renew. Me through change and chance he guideth, only good and only true. God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own. 2 Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray his trust; what with care and toil he buildeth, tower and temple, fall to dust. But God's power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. 3 God's great goodness aye endureth, deep his wisdom, passing thought: splendour, light, and life attend him,
beauty springeth out of naught. Evermore from his store new-born worlds rise and adore. 4 Daily doth th' Almighty giver bounteous gifts on us bestow; his desire our soul delighteth, pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand at his hand; joy doth wait on his command. 5 Still from earth to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son. Christ doth call one and all: ye who follow shall not fall. Collect (Please stand) Eternal God, our heavenly Father, we bless your holy name for all that you have given us in and through the life of Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. We give you thanks: for his long and full life; for his strength of character; and for his devotion and service to family, nation and
Commonwealth. We praise you for: his generosity; the many contributions he made to our national life; and the encouragement he gave to so many, especially to the young. Accept our thanks and praise, we pray, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. First Reading by the Mayor of Matlock, Cllr David Hughes (Please be seated) Isaiah 61:1-3 Hymn 1 Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm does bind the restless wave, Who bids the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; O hear us when we cry to Thee For those in peril on the sea. 2 O Savior, whose almighty word The winds and waves submissive heard, Who walked upon the foaming deep, And calm amid the rage did sleep; O hear us when we cry to Thee For those in peril on the sea. 3 O Holy Spirit, who did brood
Upon the waters dark and rude, And bid their angry tumult cease, And give for wild confusion peace; O hear us when we cry to Thee For those in peril on the sea. 4 O Trinity of love and pow'r, Your children shield in danger's hour; From rock and tempest, fire, and foe, Protect them where-so-e'er they go; Thus, evermore shall rise to Thee Glad hymns of praise from land and sea. Second Reading by the Chair of Churches Together in Matlock The Reverend Richard Reade Rector of Matlock Bank and Tansley Revelation 21:1-7 Address by The Reverend Mark Crowther-Alwyn A LITANY OF THANKSGIVING (Please kneel) As we mourn the death of Prince Philip, let us give thanks to God in faith and trust. For the gift of Christ Jesus and for all whose devotion to him has sustained the life of our Church and nation: Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. For our Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth, His Late Royal
Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, and all the Royal Family; for the ministers of the Crown and all who bear the privilege and burden of government: Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. For all people touched by the Duke of Edinburgh’s devotion to public service: Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. For our own lives, giving thanks for all who have gone before, and asking that we might go forward with confidence and hope: Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. O God, in whom we live and move and have our being, grant that your goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives, that we may ever trust in your unfailing love; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer Hymn 1 Guide me, O my great Redeemer, pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but you are mighty; hold me with your powerful hand. Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore, feed me now and evermore. 2 Open now the crystal fountain, where the healing waters flow. Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer, ever be my strength and shield, ever be my strength and shield. 3 When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside. Death of death, and hell's Destruction, land me safe on Canaan's side. Songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever sing to you, I will ever sing to you. Prayers of commendation (Please stand) Eternal God, Creator of the universe and Lord of all life, we have come together to remember the life of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. We give thanks for his long life, for the love that he received from you and showed among us. We recall with gratitude his devotion to duty, his service in the Royal Navy and his support for many causes.
Now we pray that he may know the joys of your everlasting kingdom, where sorrow and pain are no more. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord. Amen. Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with the saints: where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting. You only are immortal, the creator and maker of all: and we are mortal, formed from the dust of the earth, and unto earth shall we return. For so you ordained when you created me, saying: ‘Dust you are and to dust you shall return.’ All of us go down to the dust, yet weeping at the grave, we make our song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with the saints: where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting. Merciful God, be close to all who mourn, especially at this time, to the Queen and all members of the Royal Family. May they know the hope of your promises and the comfort of your love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymn (Please be seated) Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son; endless is the victory, thou o'er death hast won; angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave clothes where thy body lay. Refrain: Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son, Endless is the vict'ry, thou o'er death hast won. Lo! Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; Lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom; let the Church with gladness, hymns of triumph sing; for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting. Refrain: Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son, Endless is the vict'ry, thou o'er death hast won. No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life; life is naught without thee; aid us in our strife; make us more than conquerors, through thy deathless love: bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above. Refrain: Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son, Endless is the vict'ry, thou o'er death hast won. Blessing (Please stand) God save our gracious Queen Long live our noble Queen God save the Queen Send her victorious Happy and glorious
Long to reign over us God save the Queen Thy choicest gifts in store On her be pleased to pour Long may she reign May she defend our laws And ever give us cause To sing with heart and voice God save the Queen
