CALL TO WORSHIP It is good to give thanks to the LORD to sing praises to your name, O Most High, to declare your steadfast love in the morning and your faithfulness by night. Scripture Reference: Psalm 92:1-2 ALL CREATURES OF OUR GOD AND KING All creatures of our God and King Lift up your voice and with us sing O praise Him! Hallelujah! Thou, burning sun with golden beam Thou, silver moon with softer gleam O praise Him! O praise Him! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Let all things their Creator bless And worship Him in humbleness O praise Him! Hallelujah! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son And praise the Spirit, Three-in-One O praise Him! O praise Him! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! All the redeemed washed by His blood Come and rejoice in His great love O praise Him! Hallelujah! Christ has defeated every sin Cast all your burdens now on Him O praise Him! O praise Him! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! 4
He shall return in pow’r to reign Heaven and earth will join to say O praise Him! Hallelujah! Then who shall fall on bended knee? All creatures of our God and King O praise Him! O praise Him! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Original lyrics (Verses 1 & 2) by St Francis of Assisi (1181-1226), Additional lyrics (Verses 3 & 4) by Jonathan Baird and Ryan Baird CCLI no: 1986373 CONFESSION Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our sinfulness, our shortcomings, and our offences against you. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we are ashamed and sorry for all we have done to displease you. Forgive our sins, and help us to live in your light and walk in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen. SCRIPTURAL ASSURANCE OF PARDON The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger for ever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. Scripture Reference: Psalm 103:8-10 PRAYER OF PRAISE 5
TW Kids Crèche and Beginners leave at this point MAN OF SORROWS Man of Sorrows! What a name For the Son of God who came; Ruined sinners to reclaim, Hallelujah! What a Saviour! Bearing shame and scoffing rude, In my place condemned He stood; Sealed my pardon with His blood, Hallelujah! What a Saviour! Guilty, vile and helpless we, Spotless Lamb of God was He; Full atonement can it be? Hallelujah! What a Saviour! Lifted up was He to die, “It is finished!” was His cry; Now in heaven, exalted high, Hallelujah! What a Saviour! When He comes, our glorious King, All His ransomed home to bring; Then anew this song we’ll sing: Hallelujah! What a Saviour! Philip Bliss (1838-1876) 6
PSALM 98 A Psalm. 1 Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvellous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. 2 The LORD has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. 3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. 4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! 5 Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD! 7 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it! 8 Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together 9 before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity. PASTORAL PRAYER TW Kids Seniors leave for their lesson 7
JAMES 1:2-12 2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. 9 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits. 12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 8
SERMON NOTES The Truth About Poverty and Riches James 1:9-12 9
THE LORD’S SUPPER HE WILL HOLD ME FAST When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast; When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast. I could never keep my hold Through life’s fearful path; For my love is often cold; He must hold me fast. Chorus He will hold me fast, He will hold me fast; For my Saviour loves me so, He will hold me fast. Those He saves are His delight, Christ will hold me fast; Precious in his holy sight, He will hold me fast. He’ll not let my soul be lost; His promises shall last; Bought by Him at such a cost, He will hold me fast. Chorus For my life He bled and died, Christ will hold me fast; Justice has been satisfied; He will hold me fast. Raised with Him to endless life, He will hold me fast ‘Till our faith is turned to sight, When He comes at last!” Chorus Lyrics vv.1-2 Ada Habershon (1861-1918), Public Domain; Alt words vv.1-2, lyrics v.3, and music: Matt Merker, © 2013 CCLI no: 1986373 10
