Advent and Christmas at Ely Cathedral Acknowledged as one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe, Ely’s impressive Cathedral is the perfect place to visit and spend quality time with friends and family during the festive season. Experience our Christmas services and concerts with the Cathedral choristers, family-themed events, gift shopping, seasonal dining, tower tours and the spectacular 30ft Christmas tree. Ely Cathedral Gift Shops Discover perfect presents for family and friends in our festive themed gift shops with beautiful items such as jewellery, books, toiletries, accessories and homeware. From mid November both shops will also have a wide selection of seasonal stock. The Refectory Café Conveniently situated just inside the Cathedral’s main entrance, The Refectory Café offers lunches and light refreshments. This cosy, friendly café provides an ideal spot to meet with friends and family with the added bonus of being able to see the Cathedral’s magnificent Christmas tree. Christmas at The Almonry Come and celebrate Christmas in a beautifully decorated 13th Century undercroft. Our Chef Manager specialises in using good quality, locally sourced produce and has created a delicious festive menu which will be served from Monday 2 to Sunday 22 December. You can download the Christmas Menu from our website or pick up a copy in house. Whether it is a few close friends or a gathering of work colleagues, we can take daytime and evening bookings for Christmas celebrations for up to 80 guests. Services Sunday 1 December, 6pm Advent Procession This awe-inspiring service helps us prepare our hearts and minds for the season of Advent, a time of patient waiting and joyful expectation. We hear the choir sing music from many locations within the Cathedral including the clock tower at the West end of the building and the Angel windows in the Lantern. Tuesdays 3, 10 & 17 December, 9pm Advent Compline A beautiful candlelit service in the Lady Chapel to help wind down at the end of the day. Sunday 15 December, 4pm Evensong featuring Britten’s Ceremony of Carols with the Girls of Ely Cathedral Choir Accompanied by Anne Denholm, Official Harpist to the Prince of Wales from 2015-19. Sunday 15 December, 6.30pm Advent Taizé Service Contemplative worship in the Taizé tradition. Sunday 22 & Tuesday 24 December, 6pm Carol Services Featuring the Boys and Lower Voices of Ely Cathedral Choir. Tuesday 24 December, 11.30pm Midnight Mass Wednesday 25 December 10.30am Christmas Day Sung Eucharist 4pm Christmas Day Evensong
Christmas for Children and Families Saturday 7 December, 3pm Christingle Service in aid of the Children’s Society A popular family celebratory and community event. It is named after the Christingles that are lit during the service and made from an orange decorated with red tape, sweets and a candle. Sunday 8 December, 5.15pm The Big Christmas Tree Lights Switch-on Service Come and enjoy the biggest, most spectacular, Christmas tree in Ely as we count down to the switching on of the lights. This popular family event celebrates the festive season in song and prayer, concluding with the blessing of the magnificent tree! Thursday 12 December, 11am Christmas Story and Song Time Meet at the Christmas tree. A very special event for younger children retelling the Christmas Story in the wonderful setting of the Cathedral. This short service will include storytelling and festive snacks, as well as songs and prayers in preparation for Christmas. Recommended for children up to the age of 5 with their parents or carers. Friday 13 December, 7.30pm Chapterhouse Theatre Company present A Christmas Carol* A Christmas Carol is brought to life in a traditional production, complete with beautiful period costumes, song, dance, and a generous helping of festive spirit. Join critically acclaimed theatre company, Chapterhouse, in this most Christmassy of Christmas tales.
Monday 23 December, 10am - Noon Christmas Crafts - Free School Holiday Drop-in Session Activities include making stained glass window and angel decorations. In the Lady Chapel. Recommended for children up to the age of 12 with their parents or carers. Tuesday 24 December Crib Services Noon- featuring the Ely Cathedral Children’s Choir - The Ely Imps 3pm - featuring the Boys of Ely Cathedral Choir The children of the Cathedral retell the story of Christmas in this wonderful tableau of shepherds, angels, wise men and very special VIP guests from the local donkey sanctuary. Sing carols and experience the awe and wonder as we enjoy the celebrations to mark the birth of Jesus. Dressing up optional! Monday 30 December 1.30pm, 4pm, & 7pm Carrot Productions present The Snowman* Immerse yourself in the irresistible animated film of The Snowman this Christmas, accompanied by a live orchestra. Saturday 14 December, 2pm Community Christmas Carol Sing-a-long Come and sing along to your favourite carols with the Ely Cathedral Community Choir accompanied by the Littleport Brass Band.
