Christ. ( 1 John
1:8,9; John 20:23)

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only
Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of
Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

                          LORD, HAVE MERCY
M: For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with
gratitude and joy, hear our prayer, O Lord.
M: For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love
and for the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every
evil, hear our prayer, O Christ.

M: For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for those who
offer here their worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord.

M: Merciful God, maker and preserver of life, uphold us by your power and
keep us in your tender care.

         M: Let us pray.
O God, you reveal your mighty power chiefly in showing mercy and kindness.
Grant us the full measure of your grace that we may obtain your promises and

THE WORD

         FIRST READING Isaiah 35:4-7a
                        4sayto those with fearful hearts,
                            “Be strong, do not fear;
                        your God will come,
                            he will come with vengeance;
                        with divine retribution
he will come to save you.”

5Then will the eyes of the blind be opened
and the ears of the deaf unstopped.
6Then will the lame leap like a deer,

and the mute tongue shout for joy.
Water will gush forth in the wilderness
                            and streams in the desert.
7The burning sand will become a pool,

                            the thirsty ground bubbling springs.

         GOSPEL READING Mark 7:31-37
31Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of
Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.32There some people brought to him a
man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand
            on him.
33After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s

ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue.34He looked up to heaven and
with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”).35At this,
the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak
            plainly.
36Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they
kept talking about it.37People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done
everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

HYMN OF THE DAY I Pray Lord

                    1. I pray Lord, come and please do for me what for myself I cannot do.
When all my sins are laid before me, my only hope is found in you.
My sin outdistances contrition– So cold, complacent vain am I.
Remind me of my dark condition and of the quaking Sinai.
Text:
Beth
Dauenhauer 2. Again within the struggle rages, my pride against your will, O Lord.
I daily earn but my sin's wages; My faults I hide, my guilt I hoard.
Tune and Setting:
Sarah R. And still there is no condemnation, No guilt to own, no debt to pay!
Lambrecht Christ was the price for my salvation, A price no treasure can repay.

                    3. Lend me your death and resurrection; Breathe life into this hollow frame,
That every thought and word and action display your love, declare your name.
I pray Lord, come and please do for me. What for myself I cannot do!
Christ, raise your cross and go before me; Of Spirit born, I follow you.

SERMON READING James 1:19-27

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to
listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not
produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth
and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which
