DANNY’S DESK Declare Jesus – Develop Disciples – Glorify God “I love you, Lord; you are my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my Saviour; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.” Psalm 18:1-2 Hello! No doubt many of us have friends and/or family currently in another strict lockdown in Melbourne or in other parts of the country. And to be honest, I can only imagine the harsh reality of what they are actually going through right now. A caller on talkback radio this week rang in to say that though he knows that by visiting his friend during this lockdown he is breaking the rules, that friend is in such deep despair at this point of time, there is a fear that he might do something drastic – such is his current state of mind. What would you do? What can we do? It didn’t help that there was a lot of conflicting official advice as to the ‘what/where and how’ he could see his friend ‘legally’. For so many people right now it is very, very tough. In a speech to the House of Commons on March 1, 1955, Winston Churchill Said: “The day may dawn where fair play, love for one’s fellow men, respect for justice and freedom, will enable tormented generations to march forth - serene and triumphant - from the hideous epoch in which we have to dwell. Meanwhile, never flinch, never weary, never despair.” How do you respond when the stress levels get high? What do you do to bring calm into a situation or give peace and hope to yourself and to those around you? I reckon Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, where he talks about the stressors and anxieties of life are of great comfort: “We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.” Sure - we can be confused or perplexed (what a great word. My Dad used to use it after I’d done yet another dopey thing! “I’m quite ‘perplexed’ by what you just did Dan!) - but is your ‘default’ despair or joy? Can I encourage you to keep asking God to conquer any hint of despair that threatens to steal your joy? Can I encourage you to keep asking Him to continue to show you His light and His love – regardless of any pain and troubles that might bring dark clouds? “Never despair”. And finally, I want to encourage you today to hold onto God’s promise that He is always with you and that you have no need to despair. Oh, and ring your family and friends in Melbourne (or wherever they might be locked down) and encourage them to do the same! Have a great week! Danny
