A unique opportunity Renowned portrait artist Gareth Reid will be teaching at Ashbrooke House. Gareth is the Winner of Sky arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2017, painting Graham Norton for the National Gallery of Ireland. His portraiture classes in Glasgow are highly sought after and this is a unique opportunity to learn both intensively and informally from him. Gareth will also be living at Ashbrooke House for the duration of the course. The course is open to those of all abilities. Whilst the focus is on learning, the atmosphere is one of fun and enjoyment - ‘Irish Craic’ - in the idyllic setting of Ashbrooke House and The Tack Room Studio. Biography: Gareth Reid Discerning Eye (Invited Artist), London Gareth is a portraiture and life drawing Royal Glasgow Institute, Glasgow tutor previously in Con Ed at Glasgow Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin Royal Ulster Academy, Belfast School of Art, and currently at the Hunting Art Prize, London Centre for Lifelong Learning, Strathclyde Beaux Arts Gallery, Bath University. He also runs his his own Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh drawing classes around Glasgow. Bulkhead Art Prize Finalist, Glasgow Elaine Somers Gallery, Belfast This year Gareth won Sky Arts Portrait Drawing Open, (Jerwood Drawing Prize) Artist of the Year drawing Adrian Chiles, Cheltenham and Berlin Imelda Staunton, Mrs Justice Cheema- Grubb and Tom Courtenay along the Awards way. The Course Aims Setting The aim of the course is to improve observation in portraiture We will work from the model in the studio for the duration of by looking critically at shapes and relationships, by focussing the course. The students will work from the model throughout and Gareth A definitive materials list will be sent out to students after will give two x 2 hour demonstrations: the first, a drawing on day enrolment. Easels and boards are provided. one then a painting at the start of day three in order to break down the progress of a portrait into manageable chunks. Gareth does not teach a prescriptive method, instead showing ways of improving looking which can be applied to the drawing and painting of all subject matter. Vitally, this allows for each individual’s interpretation of the sitter. Accommodation About Ashbrooke House is the Dower House for the Colebrooke Estate, which has been occupied by the Brooke family over 200 years. Formerly the home of Viscount and Viscountess Brookeborough, the house has recently been fully restored and refurbished to provide luxurious accommodation. Sleeping arrangements Guests will be provided with their own room unless otherwise requested. We can accommodate a maximum of 16 persons and the bedrooms can be configured in a variety of ways so please make us aware of your requirements. Bedrooms 2 x master super-king bedrooms with large en-suites with roll top baths and walk-in showers. 2 x super-king bedrooms which can be converted to twin beds with en-suite bath and shower. 1 x super-king / twin bedroom with disabled access shower room en-suite. 3 x super-king / twin bedrooms these rooms share a separate shower room and bathroom. Catering and dietary requirements The residential course is fully catered for with 3 meals per day including snacks and tea. Those on the non-residential course are provided with lunch, snacks, coffee and tea and have the option to stay for supper for an extra £25 per night. With 1,000 acres to play in, the immediate surroundings offer miles of rambling walks, cycle routes and outdoor activities. The nitty gritty Itinerary Residential Guests are welcome to arrive after 5pm on Saturday afternoon and dinner will be laid on. Guests are expected to leave after breakfast on Friday 16th. Course days will be broken up into two sessions a morning session 10.00am to 12.30pm with a coffee break and an afternoon session 14.00pm to 16.30pm with a tea break. The course ends on Thursday at 16.30pm and there will be a dinner after and guests are asked to leave after breakfast on Friday. All meals during the course will be at Ashbrooke House. Lunch will be a buffet and dinner home-cooked and eaten in the dining room. Non residential course members should arrive at 10.00am and will be served lunch and snacks. Fees The residential course is £1050pp. The non-residential course is £650pp. Equipment Students will be required to bring their own paints, brushes, paper and pencils.
