The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost Memorial Day Weekend
Welcome to the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist
                                 27 June 2021
                       The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
                           Memorial Day Weekend
We are now permitted to have 100 people present for services. We still have to deal with
registrations and have a volunteer team present, so, for the time being, we will be only
offering the one Sunday morning service. This service will be at 11 a.m. and will be both on-
line and in-person. We will make some adaptations to the service, in order to comply with
regulations. For example, there will be less singing and the in-person congregation will only be
permitted to sing the last hymn, but we will have other hymns for the people joining us on-
line. We are handing out Hymn Books, so that you can hum along and follow the words, but
please refrain from singing until the closing hymn.

Summer Tours: The Cathedral will be open this Summer from 12 noon to 7 p.m. Tuesdays to
Fridays, and 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Entrance will be by the Stone Porch or the West
doors – avoiding the restoration work at the wooden porch.

Crypt Tea Room: It will come as no surprise that we have decided not to proceed with the
Crypt Tea Room again this year. Even though restrictions are being gradually lifted, we simply
do not have the space to be able to offer the Tea Room in a safe and responsible manner. We
hope that the Crypt Tea Room will be able to return in 2022. However, we are working on a
plan to produce Crypt Tea Room Take Out Packages! More details will be available soon!

First year students for Post-Secondary Education: Applications are now being accepted for
the Gerald & Doreen Facey Memorial Scholarship to be awarded for September 2021. This
scholarship is valued at $1,500 and will be awarded to a young person from the Anglican
Cathedral Parish enrolled in his/her first year of post-secondary education. Post-Secondary
education can be either Private College, College of the North Atlantic, Marine Institute,
Memorial University of Newfoundland, etc. This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of
academic achievement & involvement in the Cathedral Parish. The selection committee will
consist of the Rector and Wardens. Applications for the 2021 award are available from the
Cathedral Office, and must be received in the Office on or before 4 pm on August 20th, 2021.

Opening Hymn: CP 9 Today I awake Slithers of gold

Today I awake and God is beside me.
At night, as I dream, he summoned the day;
For God never sleeps, but patterns the morning
With slithers of gold or glory in grey.

2. Today I arise and Christ is beside me.
He walked through the dark to scatter new light.
Yes, Christ is alive, and beckons his people
To hope and to heal, resist and invite.

3. Today I affirm the Spirit within me
At worship and work, in struggle and rest.
The Spirit inspires all life which is changing
From fearing to faith, from broken to blest.

4. Today I enjoy the Trinity round me,
Above and beneath, before and behind;
The Maker, the Son, the Spirit together –
They called me to life and call me their friend.

The Collect of the Day

The Proclamation of the Word
2 Samuel 1:1, 17-27

Psalm 130                                                                               p. 502
OUT of the deep have I called unto thee, O LORD; / Lord, hear my voice.
2. O let thine ears consider well / the voice of my complaint.
3. If thou, LORD, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss, / O Lord, who may abide it?
4. But there is forgiveness with thee; / therefore shalt thou be feared.
5. I LOOK for the LORD; my soul doth wait for him: / in his word is my trust.
6. My soul looketh for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, /
    yea, more than watchmen for the morning.
7. O Israel, trust in the LORD, for with the LORD there is mercy, /
   and with him is plenteous redemption.
8. And he shall redeem Israel / from all his sins.

Gradual Hymn: 632 O Valiant hearts (v. 1-3)                                                  Harris

O valiant hearts, who to your glory came 2. Proudly you gathered, rank on rank, to war,
Through dust of conflict and through battle          As who had heard God’s message from afar;
                                         flame; All you had hoped for, all you had, you gave
Tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proved, To save mankind—yourselves you scorned to
Your memory hallowed in the land you loved. save.

                              3. Splendid you passed, the great surrender made,
                              Into the light that never more shall fade;
                              Deep your contentment in that blest abode,
                              Who wait the last clear trumpet-call of God.

Offertory Sentence

Offertory Hymn: 172 To thee our God we fly Rhosymedre

                             To thee our God we fly
                             For mercy and for grace;
                             O hear lowly cry,
                             And hide not thou thy face.
                             Refrain: O Lord, stretch forth thy mighty hand,
                                      And guard and bless our native land.

2. Thy best gifts from on high 3. The Church of thy dear Son
In rich abundance pour, Inflame with love’s pure fire,
That we may magnify Bind her once more in one,
And praise thee more and more. Refrain… And life and truth inspire. Refrain…
4. The powers ordained by thee                     5. Give peace, Lord, in our time;
With heavenly wisdom bless; O let no foe draw nigh,
May they thy servants be, Nor lawless deed of crime
And rule in righteousness. Refrain… Insult thy Majesty. Refrain…

The Blessing

Dismissal Hymn: 377 O for a thousand tongues to sing Richmond

                              O for a thousand tongues to sing
                              My dear Redeemer’s praise,
                              The glories of my God and King,
                              The triumphs of his grace!

 2. Jesus—the Name that charms our fears, 3. He speaks—and, listening to his voice,
 That bids our sorrows cease; New life the dead receive,
 ‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears, The mournful broken hearts rejoice,
 ‘Tis life, and health, and peace. The humble poor believe.
4. Hear him, ye deaf; his praise, ye dumb, 5. My gracious Master and my God,
   Your loosened tongues employ; Assist me to proclaim,
   Ye blind, behold your Saviour come; To spread through all the earth abroad
   And leap, ye lame, for joy! The honours of thy Name.
