HOMELAND CAMBODIA “A HOME AWAY FROM HOME” Issue #5 1 6 Water Festival! Every year, Cambodia has three major holidays: Pchum Benh, the Water Festival, and Khmer New Year. Of the three, the Water Festival is always the most exciting and joyous for our children. Read about our fun below! Homeland Party On the evening of November 17th, when the moon was at its fullest, Homeland had its traditional Water Festival Party. The children set up a traditional offering table of incense, candles, coconut, banana, and a special food called, ambaugh, only eaten on the night of the Water Festival. It is a sticky mixture of millet, sugar, and shredded coconut. Afterwards, each child drank a coconut and had a bowl of ambaugh. Festival Origins Pagoda Fair The holiday, spanning three days, November 15th, During the Water Festival, the pagodas also 16th, and 17th, has its roots in Angkorian history. Traditional Celebrations Traditionally, the holiday is celebrated by the masses in Phnom Penh, where there are fireworks, boat races, and revelry. However, this year, the event was cancelled due to the tragedy of recent flooding. Nevertheless, Homeland put together its own celebrations for the children.
HOMELAND CAMBODIA “A HOME AWAY FROM HOME” | Issue #5 7 My Story Series: “When I Grow Up…” Photo Project In September, we decided to ask all of our children to share their aspirations by answering the prompt: “When I grow up, I want to…” At the end, one young girl asked Homeland staff to participate in the activity. This caught us off guard, but also got us thinking – so we asked all of you to participate too! This month, we are featuring some of the photographs taken by the members of the Homeland Club at the Singapore American School. They did an incredible job on their photo campaign. Check out the full album on Facebook. To submit your photo, email grace.zhou@mpkhomeland.org.
