Parish Calendar ~ GLAD YOU ASKED... ~ Why isn’t fish considered meat’?? April The reason is foggy. Saint Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, for one, has been used 14th - Stations of the Cross at Stampfel’s to justify fasting rules. Paul wrote, “ ... There - 4pm is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fish, and another of birds” (15:39). That distinction was possibly taken from Judaism’s own dietary restrictions, HOLY WEEK - which separates fleishig (which includes land-locked mammals and fowl) from 18th -- Holy Thursday pareve (which includes fish). Neither the Torah, Talmud, or New St. Mary’s - 5pm Testament clearly explains the rationale behind the divide. According to the United States Conference of Cathoiic Bisnops, St. Agnes - 7pm abstinence laws sav meat is considereo something that comes only from animals that live on land, like chicken, cows, sheep or pigs. 19th -- Good Friday - St. Mary’s - 12pm Fish are considered a different category of animal. Meat has always been associated with luxury, celebration and St. Michael’s - 3pm feast. It is a way of remembering and recognizing the sacrifice Jesus 20th -- Easter Vigil - St. Michael’s 7pm made on the cross. Fridays are particularly associated with the 21st -- Easter Mass - St. Mary’s 8am crucifixion. Jesus was crucified on Friday, so we choose a peniten- tial date that happens to be Friday. ~Liturgist Corner ~ Mass Etiquette: 20 Things To Do And Not Do In Mass (continued from last week) 11. Please be quiet while in church. Once you enter the sanctuary – it is not the time or place to visit with those around you. If you must talk do so as quietly and briefly as possible. Remember that your conversation might be disturbing someone who is in prayer, which is much more important. Sssshhhhhhhh. 12. Take loud children to the back. Every parent knows that sometimes the baby is going to have a bad day. Sit on the end of a pew, if you can, and take the kid to the back Masses for the Week of quickly. Don’t wait too long before you make a move. There is no reason to be embarrassed about having to quiet your child in the April 14th - Holy Week back of the church. It is worse to allow them to disturb Mass continually. 13. Prepare your offering before Mass. Christ tells us not to let your left hand Sunday 14th For Peace know what your right hand is doing when you make your offering. Keeping St. Mary’s the basket while you get your wallet out can sometimes become quite a scene. 14. No bulletin reading during Mass. Imagine if you invited a guest to your Tuesday 16th For the Parish house and before dinner (or during) they decided to read a magazine instead St. Mary’s of talking to you. That is what is happening in God’s house when you read the bulletin. Wednesday 17th For the Parish 15. Respect Boundaries others may have. You might want to hold hands to St. Mary’s pray, they may not. They might be sick and not want to shake during the sign of peace. These are all OK. Do not make any unnecessary judgment because Thursday Holy Thursday they worship differently. 18th St. Mary’s 5pm (5 more next week) source: marysaggies.blogspot Friday Good Friday 19th St. Mary’ 12pm For questions please call Jeff Ruffatto, Katy Matovich or Fr.
