May, 2021 Page 3 HELPING HANDS is calling for Volunteers If you have an interest in serving our Church community, consider joining Helping Hands. Helping Hands is an official church committee created to offer assistance to members with needs; for example, meals during a family emergency, or rides to medical procedures. HOW IT WORKS • Anyone needing help should contact their Deacon, or a minister. • The Deacon will then contact a Helping Hands co-chair. • Then, that person will be paired with a volunteer (you) according to the person’s needs and abilities, as well as the volunteer’s capabilities. • Important to know: The person in need will not be calling you directly. That’s it! The rewards are many, both for the recipients and the volunteers. TO SIGN UP to volunteer, or to request more information, please contact the church office at 203-938-2004 or Main@FirstChurchRedding.org. If you are in need of assistance, please contact your Deacon according to the list below. May, 2021 Page 4 TAG SALE DONATION DROP-OFF DATES We are pleased to announce that the Tag Sale Studio will soon open for donations! After a year of staying home, we have all probably used the time to do some closet and garage clean outs. If so, please consider donating items in good condition to the Church Fair's Giant Tag Sale. We will be open two Sundays a month throughout the summer for donation drop-offs – the studio will open immediately following worship service and will remain open until 12:30 for donations. The seven summer dates are: June 6, June 27, July 11, July 25, August 8, August 22, and September 12. We will be open rain or shine: If an outdoor worship service is canceled due to weather, we will still plan to have the studio open. A list of donation guidelines is available for your reference at the following link: Tag Sale Guidelines 2021 All items should be clean and in good condition. Your help in pricing prior to drop-off is greatly appreciated, as it is a time consuming task for volunteers to sort and price all items. As always, furniture, rugs, and larger items cannot be delivered until the week of the fair, given limited space in the studio. Also, if you have any empty printer paper boxes, we would love to have them. They're a great size for organizing and storing donations as we prep for the fair. We look forward to seeing everyone! If you have any questions, please contact either of the Tag Sale co-chairs: Courtney Cowles (cowlesfam@yahoo.com) or Lorraine Chilson (lmchilson@gmail.com).
May, 2021 Page 5 JEWELRY TAG SALE BOUTIQUE Being home during this COVID-19 pandemic has provided us with hours to tackle tasks we had long put off. Time to sort our dresser drawers and clean our closets. Grab any bag and fill it up with treasures for the Jewelry Tag Sale Boutique for the Fall Church Fair. In addition to any quality of jewelry, we can sell your accessories: handbags, scarves, and men's and women's belts and watches. "Thank them for the good times and pleasure, now let them be someone else's treasure." Please drop off at the church office! Call first (203-938-2004) to make sure the office is open. Thank you. Stay safe and healthy! The Team Jewelry REDDING FOOD PANTRY: As you know, there is always a need for food supplies. The Redding Food Pantry is in need of the following: Paper products (TP and paper towels), household cleaners, shelf stable milk, solid white tuna, rice and cooking oil. As always, coffee and tea are appreciated. Instead of bringing donations to church, please deliver items to the Redding Community Center Heritage House entrance (located at the end of the building left of the main entrance doors). The regular drop off time is on Tuesdays from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. There is a collection bin outside the building. If you would prefer to send a monetary donation, their address is P.O. Box 1118, Redding Center, CT, 06875. Thank you! RENEWAL HOUSE: We are accepting donations for Renewal House in Danbury, whose mission is to empower older men and women who are homeless to restore their lives and to live independently. They have asked for donations of paper goods such as toilet paper, paper towels, and napkins. A marked box is in the narthex for those items if you wish to donate. If you have questions, please contact Julie Gorman at gorman64@optimum.net.
May, 2021 Page 6 New time! Open Book Club Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at 4:00 PM, location or Zoom TBA. Our selection is American Dirt, by Jeanine Cummins. Lydia and Luca, the mother and son, flee through Mexico, gathering a misfit band of other migrants. We learn that Lydia had been a bookstore owner, the wife of a journalist who infuriated the wrong people, and Luca a tiny prodigy of geography. They are hunted by Los Jardineros, the cartel that killed Lydia’s family. They are robbed by corrupt police officers. They learn how to ride La Bestia, the train on which hundreds of migrants die every year. They ultimately find themselves in Nogales, where they must cross the desert by foot at night with a coyote to arrive in the United States. Their painful and thirsty hours in the desert haunt me still.… Lauren Groff, The New York Times This terrifying and tender novel is a blunt answer to the question of why immigrants from Latin America cross the U.S. border—and a testimony to the courage it takes to do it. … Intensely suspenseful and deeply humane, this novel makes migrants seeking to cross the southern U.S. border indelibly individual.…Kirkus Reviews There has been much, much controversy surrounding American Dirt. But, for what it’s worth, here is my take. For me one of the reasons I read is to educate myself, to foster greater empathy for others, and to learn more about cultures I otherwise might not, and I believe that American Dirt has given me a greater understanding of what others are going through. It has given life to faces I only ever see on the news, and a voice to the untold stories of many. Utterly harrowing, heartbreaking, hauntingly beautiful. I don’t think I’ll ever stop thinking about this book.…The Literary Edit All are welcome to join our discussions. For further information, call Margaret Brown 203-938-3808.
