April 2021 VOLUME 36 NUMBER 2 FRIENDS’ FEEDBACK CK WRITERS/EDITORS: Gwen Glick, Carole Nail, Flory Nye-Clement A REASON TO CELEBRATE! FRIENDS FIRST POP-UP BOOK SALE We are so happy to announce that we will hold our first book sale in over 12 months on Sunday, April 11, 2021, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the courtyard behind the library! While we cannot yet welcome you back into the basement, we will be holding an outside “pop-up” book sale (weather permitting). As you can tell from the photos below, Ron Arrants and his crew of sorters have begun boxing books by category to be placed along the concrete seating wall (six feet apart, of course). Fiction hardbacks, trade paperbacks, and regular paperbacks will be displayed on tables in the center. Books from our regular sections will be represented, including children’s and teen books. Volunteers will be on hand to restock as necessary. Entrance into the courtyard will be monitored to maintain social distancing, and masks will be required. Due to the limited space available, we ask that strollers remain outside the courtyard. I’m thrilled to again be able to say see you at the sale! Carole Nail DONATIONS CANNOT BE ACCEPTED AT THIS TIME We realize that many of you have wonderful books to donate to our sale, but we just do not have space on our shelves at this time. Once we have a few sales under our belt, we should be able to again accept donations and will notify you when and where donations will be accepted. Until then, please hold on to these treasures!
CHANGES IN THE STACKS: BOOK CLUB SECTION The Benicia Library sponsors five book clubs for adult readers. Meeting once a month at varied times via Zoom, the book clubs explore genres including mystery, cookbooks, biography, Kids’ Books for Adults, and more. To make things even better, the selected books are available for checkout from the library, so there is no cost involved to participants. But what does that have to do with the Friends of the Library? Once the books have been discussed by the clubs, they are donated to the Friends for the monthly book sales. We have been collecting these books over the past year, and are now able to offer a wide variety of titles in our expanded section. Whether you belong to a club that needs multiple copies of a particular title, or you are a book club of one, now is your chance to catch up on interesting books you may have missed--for just $1 per copy! Below are some of the genres and titles that will be available at our April 11 book sale; or if you prefer to reserve copies for purchase and pick up at an arranged time, email Ron Arrants at rarrants0@gmail.com. Thank you to Diane Dooley for her contribution to this article. c Biography Mystery Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow Newcomer: A Mystery by Keigo Higashino Wayne and Ford: The Films, the Friendship and A Dying Note by Ann Parker the Forging of an American Hero by Nancy Insidious Intent by Val McDermid Schoenberger If I Die Tonight by Allison Gaylin Take Six Girls: The Lives of the Mitford Sisters by Laura Thompson Second Street Station by Lawrence H.Levy Fiction and Historical Fiction* Miscellaneous Non-Fiction Night of Miracles by Elizabeth Berg The Library Book by Susan Orlean A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult Fly Girls by Keith O’Brien Sarah’s Key* by Tatiana de Rosnay Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain Yellow Crocus* by Laila Ibrahim All the Single Ladies by Rebecca Traister Biography Social Science History Business Thriller Young Adult HAIL AND FAREWELL: BEVERLY CLEARY Children’s literary icon Beverly Cleary died on March 25 at the age of 104. Winner of two Newbery honors, Cleary wrote more than 40 books that have delighted generations of readers. She will be greatly missed.
BENICIA LIBRARY UPDATE The library plans a limited re-opening once Solano County moves into the Orange tier and remains there for two weeks. At that time, hours will be expanded to Mon/Wed/Fri from noon to 5. Curbside service will continue to be offered on Tue/Thur/Sat. Hours will gradually increase as the County moves into the Yellow tier. SUPPORT THE FRIENDS: AmazonSmile AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon that lets customers enjoy the same products, low prices, and convenient shopping features as Amazon.com, while earning money for the Friends of the Benicia Library! When you purchase eligible items, the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price to the Friends. Here’s all you need to do: 1. Visit smile.amazon.com, then log in with your Amazon user ID and password; 2. Select the Amazon Smile tab, then select Friends of Benicia Public Library as your designated charity; 3. Then shop! If you have items in your cart selected from Amazon.com, those items will automatically appear in the AmazonSmile cart. In order to receive the donation credit, the order must be placed from the AmazonSmile cart. There is no cost to the Friends or to AmazonSmile customers for participating. The shopping experience is identical to Amazon.com and provides another way for members to support their library! We’d like to extend our thanks to the members who have continued supporting the Friends throughout the lockdown. Here are ways in which you can contribute to the Friends’ efforts. Renew your annual membership. Consider increasing your membership level, or renewing for multiple years. Give Friends memberships as gifts to friends and family. Make an additional donation to the Friends. Continue to collect your books for the time when we can again accept donations. You can find membership and donation forms at www.benicialibrary.org/friends. OUT AND ABOUT On a recent walk, I discovered this sign hanging from the fence around Joe Henderson Elementary School. With all the recent upheaval in our nation and around the world, it seemed to be particularly relevant.
NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK: APRIL 18-24, 2021 National Volunteer Week was established in 1974 as a way to recognize and celebrate the effort of volunteers across America. Without the hard work of the volunteers listed below, the Friends book sales would not be possible. We’re very happy to welcome our sorters back to work in preparation for our April 11 pop-up book sale, and hope that it won’t be long before the cashiers are back to work as well! Thank you all!
