Day 1: Welcome Join us for a five days as we celebrate the unique and diverse Transport Heritage on the Isle of Man. Nostalgia guaranteed! MER Parallel Run 1 and 2 are the oldest electric tramcars in the world still in regular operation. Car 1 and Car 2 (with trailer 51) will run in parallel between Derby Castle and Laxey. Depart Derby Castle at 09:10, arrive Laxey 09:40. Car 2 and trailer 51 will remain in service throughout the day. Also departs Ride on Manx Electric Railway Derby Castle 10:40 and 14:10. Cars 1 and 2 in their 125th anniversary year. Listed in the Standard tram fares apply. Guinness Book of Records, Cars Go travel cards accepted. Groudle Glen Railway and Sea Lion Rocks Tearooms Open in conjunction with MER services from 11:00 to 21:00. Ride all day rover tickets £4.50 adult/£2 children. Go Explore cards accepted. Snaefell Sunset Dinner Relax, raise a glass and enjoy stunning sunset views whilst you dine at the highest point on the Isle of Man. • Trams depart from Ramsey at 17:10, arriving at Laxey 17:55. Wednesday, 25th July 2018 50th Anniversary of the last train on the Northern Line To mark the occasion, a locomotive will be positioned on track outside an original Manx Northern Station building at Kirk Michael. Kirk Michael Heritage Trust will be in the former station building with a photographic display focused on the Northern Line. This will be the first time since closure of the line in 1968 that a locomotive has visited the station. Photographic opportunities all day! Free for all to attend. Vintage Bus Tour of the Closed Lines from Ramsey Our tour departs Douglas Steam Railway Station at 10:00, proceeding up the east coast directly to Ramsey and then following the former railway route to St. Johns. In Ramsey there will be a photographic display based on the Northern line, with Michael Starkey and Les Clarke. The bus will then proceed back to Douglas stopping at Sulby Bridge, Sulby Glen, The Wild Life Park (a ride on the Orchid Line Miniature Railway) Ballaugh Goods Shed, Kirk Michael (see above for further information) St. Germains and finally St. Johns. Meet at Douglas Railway Station at 09:45, return by 18:30. Guides from the Heritage Railways Volunteers Group will accompany this tour. Please note there will be several walking sections on this tour that will not be suitable for those with limited mobility. A separate fare is payable at the Wild Life Park for the train ride. Lunch will take place in Ramsey between 11:30 - 12:30 where a selection of cafes are open. Tickets £20. Take the controls of MER Car 1 between Laxey and Ballamenaugh. Participants must be aged between 21 and 75. Tram departs Laxey at 10:15, 11:15, 12:40, 14:15 and 15:15. Please report to the Laxey Stationmaster no later than twenty minutes before your booked time. Two participants £25. To book online per trip. Day 2 : Enhanced MER Services between Douglas and Laxey Car 33 and trailer 56 depart Derby Castle 09:25 and depart Laxey 10:10 Car 16 and trailer 60 depart Derby Castle 11:25 and depart Laxey 12:10 Standard tram fares apply. Go travel cards accepted. The Manx Northerner Transport Festival for 2018 features the return to service of legendary Manx Northern Locomotive “Caledonia”. This powerful 0-6-0T engine was built for hauling the heavy mineral trains between Ramsey Harbour and Foxdale Mines. She also saw service on the Snaefell Mountain, the steeply graded Knockaloe Branch out of Peel, and for many years was the railways snow clearance loco. Having been out of service for several years, “Cale” has recently been refitted and will be hauling passenger trains over the ‘Transport Festival’ weekend, starting with the 09:50 from Douglas. MER Photography Tour with Car 19 and Trailer 42 An afternoon tour between Derby Castle and Ramsey, stopping en route at scenic locations for photographic opportunities. Using Winter Saloon Car 19 recently re-painted in 1899 “Douglas, Laxey and Ramsey Electric Tramway” livery and refurbished trailer 42, returned to service this season after an absence of ten years. Thursday, 26th July 2018 Unusual MER Tram and Trailer Combinations Car 1 and trailer 43 will depart Derby Castle at 8:40, 11:40 and 15:10 Car 7 and trailer 51 will depart Derby Castle at 9:10, 10:40 and 14:10 Car 2 and trailer 48 will depart Derby Castle at 9:40, 12:40 and 16:10 Car 22 and trailer 62 will depart Derby Castle at 10:10 and 13:40 Standard tram fares apply. Go travel cards accepted. Pie and Mash supper on the Dining Car / Evening Talking Train Two course Pie and Mash Supper on the Dining Car: £26pp including train fare. Descriptive and historical commentary en route, provided by The Heritage Railways Volunteers Groups. Seating available for non- diners. Departs Douglas 19:00 to Port Erin 20:15, return 21:15 arriving Douglas 22:30. Upon arrival at Port Erin, why not take the opportunity to explore the Railway Museum? A Night at the Museum In association with the Heritage Railway Volunteers Group and featuring floodlit exhibits, audio/video presentations, and incorporating the new exhibition in the Port Erin Railway Museum to portray the Government years. Go travel cards accepted. Derby Castle Workshop Tours An opportunity to see “behind the scenes” at Derby Castle Depot and Yard. Each tour will include a brief history of the depot, a look at different types of trams, how they work and are maintained. Items of rolling stock not currently in use will be displayed inside the depot and MER artefacts will be on display. Tours limited to 10 persons per tour. Tours start at 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, 14:15 & 15:15.(Please meet at the MER Museum at the Derby Castle Depot for your tour to start. Tickets £6. Visit the dedicated museum, located in the main depot at Derby Castle, where you can learn more about the history of this pioneering railway. The museum is located inside Derby Castle Yard. Friday, 27th July 2018 Stamps on the MER A special postal service will operate between Derby Castle Station and Ramsey. Railway letter covers, cancelled with railway station postmarks, will be carried in the Manx Electric Railway’s Mail Van No.4 on the 08:40 from Derby Castle. Depart Ramsey 10:10 and on arrival at Laxey at 10.55, the Mail Van will be situated at Laxey Station Siding and used for sorting mail. Special covers for both these services can be ordered in advance from Ramsey Philatelic Services, 5 Windsor Road, Ramsey, IM8 3EG (plus 85p postage & packing) or will be available on the day from the Mail Van in Laxey Station siding. MER Covers are £4.75 each. Vintage Bus Tour of Closed Lines Marking the 50th anniversary of the last trains from Peel, our vintage bus leaves Douglas at 10:00. At Peel there will be a tour of the former station site and the delightful Transport Museum. The tour will then proceed back into Douglas via the Knockaloe Camp entrance and the closed stations at Foxdale, St. Johns, Crosby and Union Mills, stopping to explore the sites in the company of guides from the Heritage Railways Volunteers Group. Meet at Douglas Railway Station at 09:45, return by 18:30. This tour includes several walking sections that will not be suitable to those with limited mobility. £20. Douglas Workshop, Running Shed and Signal Box Tours Join the Heritage Railway Volunteers for the popular tours of the steam sheds and workshops and learn what life was like for the Douglas signalman with a visit inside the unique signal box, the interior of which remains almost unchanged since it was first built. Tours start: 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00. Wait at Douglas Station for your tour to start. New for this year we will also be hosting junior tours at 10:30 and 11:30 (Please note that under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult). Tickets £6, £3 for children under 16. Staff will be in authentic costume taking you back to the heyday of the Glen in the Victorian Tourist era. Normal ride all day rover ticket £4.50 adult/£2 children. Go Explore cards accepted. Douglas Bay Horse Tramway Open Afternoon An opportunity to meet the trammers in their stables at Summer Hill followed by a final opportunity to ride from the Broadway lights to the Victoria Pier on a parallel run with Toast Rack trams 36 and 45 at 16:00. Saturday, 28th July 2018 Travelling Post Office The 10:00 from Port Erin and the 11:20 from Douglas will also include a Traveling Post Office transporting special commemorative stamp covers. These very limited edition covers, with Railway Letter Stamps and canceled with railway station postmarks will be available for both parts of the journey. These can be ordered in advance from Ramsey Philatelic Services, 5 Windsor Road, Ramsey, IM8 3EG (plus 85p postage & packing) or will be available on the day from the TPO on arrival at Douglas and Port Erin stations. Steam Railway TPO Covers £4.75 each Great Laxey Mine Railway Open from 11:00 to 16:30 Saturday and Sunday, the Great Laxey Mine Railway offers a fascinating insight into the industrial heritage of Laxey. Shunting commences at 19:00 with short train journeys to the Peel Line siding for additional unique photo opportunities. Two Locomotives will carry special event headboards and the final movement into the Station will be a double header. Followed by an update by the Director of Public Transport in the Tickethall at 20:30 and a Hog Roast under the Station canopy. Platform tickets for photographs and talk £3 or £5 including enhanced photo opportunities and a short train ride to the Peel line siding. Hog Roast £5. Day 5 : Intensive MER Service (Timetable to be provided close to the event) Standard tram fares apply. Go travel cards accepted. Groudle Glen Railway and Sea Lion Rocks Gala Day Featuring every type of motive power Groudle Glen Railway have in service. Steam, battery and diesel all operating on public trains throughout the day. There will also be a chance to view unusual combinations. Open from 11:00 to 16:30. Normal ride all day rover ticket: £4.50 for adults/ £2 children. Guided Walk from St Johns to Kirk Michael. Join guides from IOM railway walks for a trip along the Manx Northern Railway, from St Johns to Kirk Michael. Meet at the bus stop opposite Tynwald Hill at 10:30. The walk takes approximately 4:30 hours. Suitable clothing and footwear required. Please note this walk is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Free event. Sunday, 29th July 2018 Vintage Transport Running Day Vintage transport running day at the Jurby Transport Museum, providing a rare opportunity to ride on vehicles not usually accessible to the public. Visiting vehicles will also be on display throughout the day. A circular bus service will be running using a variety of museum based vehicles departing every 20 minutes calling at: Ballaugh (Raven), The Wildlife Park and Orchid Line Miniature Railway, Sulby (Glen Hotel), Sulby Village, Sulby Bridge (Ginger Hall), Sandygate Crossroads and Jurby Threshold. Free admission for all. Donations welcomed. Manxman Sunday Lunch Traditional 3 course Sunday Lunch on board the Dining Car. Departs Douglas 12:30, returns by 14:40. £30 per adult/£15 children between 4 years and 11 years. Tickets available in advance, call Anne on 01624 697457. Illustrated Talk & Social Evening Conclude our festival with an illustrated talk in The Tickethall. The presentation will focus on the end of the Peel and Ramsey lines with Mike Buttell and an update from Andrew Scarffe on the final stages of MER Rachet Car 14. 20:00 - 22:00.
