Staff will continue to update our Senior CENTER SCHEDULES Center members and other groups on schedule changes due to VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES COVID-19. The Department POINTS OF INTEREST continues to follow guidance from local and state officials, as well as FUN AND GAMES the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Your continued support and patience is appreciated as staff works through this ongoing situation.
February 2021 Center Schedules All Centers are closed until further notice!! We want to thank all the Senior Coordinators during this time! They are doing their very best to keep in touch with each one of you on a weekly/bi-weekly schedule. If you have any questions or concerns make sure to write them down and ask them when they call. I hope you all Well, Seniors here we are in the new year 2021. February, had a wonderful holiday and I also hope 2021 allows us to where has the time gone. WE have missed our time together, meet again very soon! Take care and be well this winter! I am we have seen things change so much in this world. Volunteer Opportunities WEAR RED AND GIVE DAY 2021 On the first Friday of every February, which is designated as American Heart Month, the nation comes together, igniting a wave of red from coast to coast. From landmarks to news anchors and neighborhoods to online communities; this annual groundswell unites millions of people for a common goal: the eradication of heart disease and stroke. So wear red on February 5th to support the cause! Points of Interest Celebrating BLACK HISTORY MONTH While he was not the first African American astronaut, Guion Bluford was the first African American astronaut to successfully travel to space in 1983. John Mercer Langston was the first black man to become a lawyer when he passed the bar in Ohio in 1854. When he was elected to the post of Town Clerk for Brownhelm, Ohio, in 1855 Langston became one of the first African Americans ever elected to public office in America. Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to the house of Representatives. She was elected in 1968 and represented the state of New York. She broke ground again four years later in 1972 when she was the first major party African American candidate and the first female candidate for President of the United States Madam C.J. Walker was born on a cotton plantation in Louisiana and became wealthy after inventing a line of African American hair care products. She established Madame C.J. Walker Laboratories and was known for her philanthropy. Barack Obama became the first African American President of the United States in 2008. Fun and Games RED VELVET SUGAR COOKIES Ingredients: 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks) 1 tablespoon red food coloring 4 ounces cream cheese (half a (liquid) brick) 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup cornstarch 1 egg yolk, large 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa 2 teaspoons vanilla extract powder 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and line baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Place the butter, cream cheese, and sugar in a large mixing bowl and beat on medium-low speed until smooth (about 1 minute). 3. Add the egg yolk, vanilla, and food coloring and mix on medium speed until combined. 4. Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl with a silicone spatula, then add the flour, cocoa, cornstarch, and salt. 5. Mix on medium-low speed until a stiff dough forms (about 30 seconds to 1 minute).Roll the dough to 3/16-inch thick (rolling pin rings ensure an even and exact thickness) between 2 sheets of parchment paper. 6. Remove the top sheet of parchment, and cut shapes with a 3-inch heart cookie cutter. 7. Peel the shapes from the bottom layer of parchment, and transfer to the prepared baking sheets. 8. Bake for 12 to 16 minutes, or until set around the edges but still a little soft towards the center. 9. Cool completely, then frost with royal icing. Love Maze Help Cupid get to the heart! According to Groundhog Day folklore, on February 2, if Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow and sees his shadow (sunny morning), winter will last another six weeks.
