Welcome to Sixth Grade! I am so excited for this year to begin! I am really looking forward to having your child in my class this year. Throughout the year, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at school, on Class Tag or via e-mail. You can also leave a message on my voicemail in my classroom, and I will return your call as soon as possible. The verse I have chosen as a theme for my classes is Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” I really want to emphasize this year how very important each student is to God. He has specially created every one of them and gifted them with different talents and abilities. I really want to encourage them to use those gifts to the best of their abilities and in a way that glorifies God. As the oldest students in the school, the sixth graders have the privilege of setting an example and being leaders to the younger students. I want them to see the importance of that role and do their best to set a good example for the others – not only at school, but at home and anywhere else they spend time. In addition to this verse, the sixth graders have also chosen a verse as a theme for the class. The verse they have chosen is Colossians 3:2: “Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.” This is a wonderful verse to remind them that our hope is in the eternal rather than the temporary. We want to use our time wisely here on earth, but also do things with the eternal goal in mind. In this handbook, I have laid out my classroom policies as well as some important dates and events for you to remember. Please read over it and return the slip in your Tuesday folder, letting me know you have read it all. If you have any questions, please let me know. I am looking forward to a great year and can’t wait to see what the Lord has in store for us! Erin Funk sixthgrade@wocs.org

-Policies & Procedures- Discipline/Classroom Management: Students will be taking part in our Classroom Economy. Please see the attached pages for more information. Class Tag: Miss Dick and I will be using the mobile app “Class Tag” to communicate with you throughout the year. We will post pictures of what we’re doing in class as well as send updates and reminders for you. Tardies: We will give the students five minutes between each class to get their books, go to the bathroom, get a drink, etc. Each tardy will result in a $5 fine. Homework: We will not regularly assign work to be done at home. Most of the homework the students wil have will be anything they don’t finish in class. Occasionally I will assign something extra to be finished at home. Any work turned in late will be ten points off for each day late. Assignment Books: Everything that we assign in class is to be written in this book as we assign it. If the student completes it in class, Miss Dick or I will initial it; otherwise, it is homework. I also require that these get signed by a parent each night. Please sign the book in the box with the date for the day. Book-it: Book-it starts in October and goes through March. Each student will be required to read 450 pages per month. The students will receive a grade for Book-it during those months. The grades will be determined based on how many pages are read up to 450 and if they are turned in on time. Each student that reads the entire amount and turns in their sheet on time each month will receive the monthly reward. Students that complete all six months will be able to attend the Book-it party in the spring. (BONUS: The student who reads the most pages throughout the whole year will receive a big prize at the end of the year!) Classroom Library: I have a small library in my classroom. The students are welcome to check out one book at a time from it. I will take inventory of the books at the end of the year. If a book is not returned, you will be billed through TADS to replace it.
Scholastic Book Orders: I will place a monthly order through Scholastic for anyone that would like to order books. You may order online or with the paper form. You are never obligated to order, but will always have the option. We can get free books for our classroom based on how much is ordered each month. Class Descriptions, Tests, and Quizzes: All tests and quizzes will be announced in class ahead of time and will also be included in my note for the week. o Spelling (Miss Funk): Spelling days will be each Wednesday. We wil have a test over all the words as well as grade the spelling book pages. The students will also write their spelling words three times in cursive. This is a mandatory assignment each week. Written spelling words and workbook pages are due before the test on Wednesday. Once we have wrapped up each lesson with the test, I will assign the next lesson. o Math (Miss Funk): There will be a math assignment daily. I will do my best to give them enough time to finish in class, but if they do not finish, it will be homework. There wil be a test or quiz each week in math. Students will be allowed to correct all math tests for half credit regardless of the grade. The tests will come home in the Tuesday folder and any corrections must be turned back in before the next test. o Language (Miss Dick): Students will be completing daily language assignments where they will occasionally have homework. There will be an occasional quiz within the unit and a test at the end of each unit. We will complete a few written essay papers throughout the year. A rubric will be provided for each essay. o Reading (Miss Funk): We will be having reading comprehension tests every few weeks – this requires no preparation. We wil also have vocabulary quizzes. Students will complete a study guide prior to each quiz. Students will also complete four book reports throughout the year. The type of report wil vary, and I will send home instructions for each one with it is time. Book-It will be a part of the students’ reading grade. o History (Miss Dick): Students will have at least one quiz and one test for each chapter. They will be announced in class several days ahead of time. They will have a few projects throughout the year. I will send out more information along with rubrics and the exact due dates when the time comes.
o Science (Miss Funk): Students will complete a few hands-on projects throughout the year. I will send home more details when the time comes for each project. Two or three quizzes wil be given throughout each chapter, and tests will be given at the end of each chapter. There wil be a study guide assigned prior to each quiz. These study guides will also serve as the study guide for the test, so students need to keep them in their science folder once they have taken the quiz. Students may also write the vocabulary words and definitions from each chapter for extra credit. They must be turned in before I give the test. o Bible (Miss Dick): Students will be tested over a memory verse each week. They will have a unit test every 2 weeks. They may occasionally have some homework pages as well. Memory Verses can be found on www.deeprootsbible.com. Redos: Students may redo assignments with a grade below 80%, however, they wil only receive 50% credit for the corrected questions. Any redos will come home with the stack of graded papers in the Tuesday folder each week. Electives: Students have the option of taking different electives on Thursday afternoon. They chose these classes on the first day of school. Nursing Home: At this time, we are not able to go to the VA for BINGO. However, if and when that changes, I will send home more information and a driving sign-up sheet. Class Parties: You will sign up to help with one or more class parties at the first Parent/Teacher Conference. o Christmas Party: December 20, 2019 o God’s Love Party: February 14, 2020 o Resurrection Party: April 9. 2020 Birthday Parties: Each student wil receive a special blessing in chapel on their birthday. You may also bring a treat for the class if you would like. I will get in touch with you to arrange a day and time. If your child has a summer birthday, I will assign them a school birthday.

Because of that trip, we will only be taking two other field trips this year. o P-Bar Farms (all-school): Fall TBA o 6th Grade Fun Day (with Elk City 6th Grade): Spring TBA o Washington, D.C.: April 18-24, 2021 Special Activities: o Math Olympics: Classroom: October 26, 2020 District (WOCS): November 9, 2020 Area (WOCS): February 26, 2021 **Please note that the students will also be in Miss Dick’s room for some classes.
