FWC Companion Share ⬧ Enjoy ⬧ Enrich Newsletter of the Faculty Women’s Club, University of Alberta Vol. 34, No. 3 April 2021 Spring Greetings A message from the President … Dear members, Spring is upon us once again and warmer days are ahead. This past fall and winter I missed the FWC in-person social events and seeing family and friends. Like many of you I am looking forward to a time we can meet again and with our extended families. Below is a picture of my husband and me with the grandkids at our youngest daughter's wedding in Fort Edmonton Park in August three years ago. Since then, we have another grandson William, who was born last September. Julianna (the little one trying to get away), Anna, Ethan and Austin. 1 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
I would like to thank all the members of the Executive for their work behind the scenes this past fall and winter. Programs pulled together three online sessions, Newsletters went out to the membership and Conveners of the special interest groups continued to run groups when possible by meeting in various ways, outside, through e-mail or ZOOM. We are so lucky to have such wonderful ladies and new technology available to us. In the past few months, the Executive had several items on our plate. Here is a brief update on the things we have been working on. 1. Updates/Changes to the Faculty’s Women’s Club. University of Alberta Constitution, 2010. - There has been much discussion on updating the Constitution of the FWC to address issues with ASSUA changes in positions excluded from the bargaining unit. A committee was struck in the fall made up of the Executive lead by Robin Inskip, with Dr. Christine Brown and Karen Doucet. I thank them for their hard work on this initiative. Our next step in the process is to consult with our members. A short survey will be sent out to the membership shortly. 2. Annual General Meeting (AGM) - The AGM will be held on ZOOM on Tuesday, May,11 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. All members will be sent a link a day or two before with the agenda. 3. Optional - AGM After Event - After the formal portion of the AGM, time will be allotted for members to visit online. I encourage you to bring your drink of choice and/or snacks and mingle with your friends on Zoom. 4. Programs for the Fall - At this time, the Fall Membership Wine and Cheese is postponed. We are working with the University Club on options and timing. Once we have something firm we will update you. 5. Membership Fees - Membership fees will be waived again this year. After a close review of the finances, the Executive agreed we have enough funds to cover a few events. 6. Membership Registration - We are trying something new with membership registration. We are asking all members to register online on the FWC website. This will provide the club with an up-to-date membership count and contact information required for the new directory. Options will be provided for those who require assistance registering (see details in the membership section of this newsletter). 2 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
I look forward to seeing all of you soon, perhaps outside while social distancing, walking on the trails and at some point inside at one of the future club events. Reflecting on this past year, we are bonded in spirit, we have endured! Spring finalizes one year and brings adventures anew. As we prepare for our Annual General Meeting, we call for a new executive. I reflect upon the 86 Presidents, and too numerous to mention volunteers, who have maintained our existence, we have tremendous memories! How has the Faculty Women’s Club contributed to your life? Our executive is made up of members like you and me, who share in the responsibility of this existence. Effective executive recruitment is part of a continuous effort by you, who have a strong interest in what we do, and who are willing to share their time in its development. 3 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc

❖ MEMBERSHIP and DIRECTORY REPORT ❖ March 7, 2021 Important Information for 2021-22 Renewals and Directory We hope this winter found you well: We have much to be hopeful and grateful for as the vaccines roll out. Stay well – we will all be back in person in the not too distant future! For the coming 2021-22 years we decided there will be no membership fees, as the Club has funds to cover our basic costs, including the cost of printing an updated directory in the Fall. To update the directory we need to make sure we have everyone's latest details, so please make sure to renew your membership, or let us know if you are not planning to renew. Since there's no membership fee, and we still can't meet in person, we are asking everyone to please just fill out the online registration form via our website. (For those of you receiving a printed copy of this newsletter by mail we've attached a paper copy of the membership form) Completing the online form is very easy - just click on this link: Registration form. Or go to the FWC website at https://uab.ca/fwc, select Membership from the list of options on the left-hand side and click on the online registration form in the Registration section. If you have difficulty with the online registration form, do please contact one of us at membership.fwc@gmail.com or directory.fwc@gmail.com (phone numbers are in your 2019-20 directory). Thank you so much - this will make tracking and processing much easier for us :) The deadline for details to be included in the directory is September 30, 2021, so if we haven't heard from you by then, unfortunately, we won't be able to include you in the updated directory. Thank you in advance for getting your membership renewals in now. Marie and Tricia On another note, Bill and I will be leaving Edmonton in June or July (after we get the vaccines). I want to say thank you to the club and all the wonderful members. I have been with the club for 17 years and on Membership for 12 of them. Can you tell I liked it!!! Bill retired in July, our daughter is presently in Ottawa and our family lives in Ontario. Of course, Allan our son is in Sweden but we are not moving there – visit yes! 5 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
Sorry, I can’t say goodbye in person but sending a virtual hug and wishing you all the best in health and happiness. As far as membership goes, I leave you in the wonderful hands of Pat Petersen, an experienced member who has also helped me many times at the membership table. Thank you, Pat, for saying Yes. Stay well, my friends. Yours in friendship Marie Dafoe ❖ MEMBER NEWS ❖ Congratulations to ... Robert (Bob) Daniel Steadward, was promoted to the level of a companion of the Order of Canada for his lifelong advocacy for athletes with disabilities. Congratulations to Bob. Laura, you must be really proud! Our condolences... Elizabeth (Betty) Lilge, a long-term member of the FWC passed away in her 106th year. Betty was active in the FWC, and its President from 1961-1962. Betty attended the University of Alberta from 1934-1937 where she was a member of the women’s basketball team as well as the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Betty worked as a school teacher until her marriage in 1942 to Walter Lilge. Betty and Walter settled in Edmonton where Walter was a professor at the University of Alberta. In 1949 they moved into their newly-built home in Windsor Park where Betty lived for 70 years. Beryl Williams, a long-time member of the FWC, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 22, 2021, in Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 84. Her obituary published in the Edmonton Journal on 30 January 2021 describes Beryl as outgoing, social, loved parties and laughing. She was quick-witted and could keep up with the best of them! It was with a notable zest for adventure that Beryl and Noel settled in Edmonton in 2002. Although Edmonton was home for 20 years, they spent most of their winters in Arizona. There, she did what she had always done in new surroundings, she joined clubs and made friends, enjoyed spending time with her growing family and continued to travel the world 6 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
❖ Interest Groups ❖ With a heavy heart, I must report that due to the nature of the pandemic some groups cannot be active and are on hiatus. Below is a quick reference to all the interest groups and their status. I encourage all members to contact the conveners of any of the groups they wish to join. The Executive is working to keep our members in touch with each other in old and new ways. Our first investment is a Zoom Pro licence that will facilitate future virtual events. Ideas for new groups are always welcomed! Please reference the directory for individual conveners’ contact information. Interest Group Updates Book Discussion – Afternoon Conveners: Cathy de Frece and Valerie Wasylishen Meets: Fourth Thursday of the month at 1:30 p.m. The Afternoon Book Club continues to meet via Zoom. At our last meeting on February 25, we had a short discussion regarding what we could submit for the FWC March Newsletter. We all agreed that it is preferable to meet in person but the Zoom meetings are working for the present—everyone is excited to see one another and the commute is short. Of course, the ladies are missing the tea/coffee and goodies which are a highlight of our in-person gatherings. In January, Laura Steadward presented A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. In February, Christine Forth presented Watching You Without Me by Lynn Coady. As usual, the discussion was lively, with thought-provoking opinions from the ladies. In March, Ellen Amrhein will present The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zaphón. We will discuss American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins in April and The Difference by Marine Endicott in May. We look forward to moving our meetings outdoors in May and June Book Discussion – Evening Conveners: Karen Bain Meets: Third Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm. When we met in June to select the books for this year, we planned to meet via Zoom for the first meeting in September, then see how Covid was evolving. Needless to say, we are continuing via Zoom. Although we miss the personal contact and lovely snacks, several members have mentioned the advantage of avoiding the cold, icy roads at night, relying on other people for a ride, and we are joined by a member who has 9 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
moved east. Generally, Zoom has been quite accommodating, although not without technical difficulties! We are open to new members and zoom offers an opportunity to meet with us if you are interested in the books we are reviewing. Individual members volunteer to facilitate an evening, provide information about the author, some insights into the book, then coordinate the discussion so participants each have an opportunity to ask questions or give their opinions and personal experiences related to the book. We have shared some interviews on youtube and/or PowerPoints that add to the conversation. Typically, an email and zoom invitation are sent a few days prior to each meeting as well as an email of thanks and follow-up. Although this method of meeting is not ideal, we are attempting to uphold the history of Evening Book Club which is one of the longest-running interest groups of FWC. In September we discussed Beverly McLachlin’s two books, Full Disclosure and Truth Be Told. October involved a review of Born a Crime by Trevor Noah, including a discussion of South Africa which has been visited by several members. In November, a discussion of Lady Clementine by Marie Benedict and December The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris gave members an opportunity to share their experiences of Britain, war and travel. Our January meeting provided a review of Little Yellow House by Carissa Halton. Carissa joined us for this evening and was a delightful guest with many insights into present life along 118th avenue. This book was published by the University of Alberta Press, which we are happy to support. Our current February book is Becoming by Michelle Obama. For March we have a mixed meeting planned with no specific book. April will be a review of Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste, and in May Middlemarch by George Eliot. With any luck for immediate inoculations and less Covid threat, we will be able to hold an outside meeting to select books for next year in June but will do so virtually if needed. If you are interested in joining us for a specific book review or have further questions, please contact Karen Bain kebain@telus.net A copy of the books selected, and an organized schedule for the year can be emailed by request. Couples Who Cook Convener: Peggi Ferguson-Pell Meets: Saturday evenings in members’ homes (six to eight times per year). We Went to the Kasbah – and it was Good! Couples Who Cook is still operating in virtual mode (who isn’t?) so on January 30, 14 of us got together to enjoy a virtual Come to the Kasbah! Moroccan dinner in the comfort of our own homes. We were encouraged to get relaxed and some chose to dine while lounging on the floor with comfy pillows and flowing robes. 10 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
We decided not to have a set menu but rather offer a selection of Moroccan dishes that people could pick and choose from that they were interested in making that night. We were joined by Rachel and Craig's son Leo who was well-versed and most proficient in Moroccan cookery – a future chef in the making. We also caught glimpses of other fleeting visitors in the background – including some four-footed ones. Everyone seemed very happy with their recipe choices and there were moments when the only sound on Zoom was a rather contented mmmmmmm as people dug in. One of the clear winners of the evening was the Khobz – the Moroccan bread which we all seemed to make with success. If you are still on the sourdough train – you might want to stop off at the Khobz station and enjoy a delightful, easy break. Pat and Nils with their beautiful Khobz bread. We mostly all tried a version of the lamb and prune tagine for our main course – whether we had an actual tagine or not – and it filled our kitchens with wonderful aromas, wrapped us in a delicious warmth, and for a moment or so we were transported from Alberta in January to a dream of North Africa. For dessert, several folks made the orange cake which looked beautiful, and I for one will be making the sliced oranges again this summer - incredibly simple, so refreshing and the orange blossom water (sorry – I wimped out and bought it on Amazon) totally makes it. Below are several of the recipes we used – please enjoy! Jane and Rick show off their orange cake 11 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
Please remember you are always welcome to join us. In the coming months, we might be taking an online cooking class and will certainly be holding a few more virtual dinners – so please give me a call or email – we would love to have you join us. But finally, the weather sent us off our patios and onto Zoom, where we have been meeting monthly since November to share our work and provide mutual support to one another. In addition, we created two pandemic projects. The first, thanks to member Sara Norquay's technological wizardry, is a blog containing some of our stories. Please 12 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
check it out at https://fwcstories.wordpress.com/?s=blog It is a work in progress, so by no means finished, but we hope to keep it going long after the pandemic is history. Our other project was a progressive story. This is a fun activity that entails each member writing a paragraph of a story, passing it to the next person, who adds a paragraph and passes it to the third person, and so on. We've done this several times before, but this time we took on the significant challenge of writing a murder mystery, which is now in its concluding phase. As with most people, our relationship with Zoom is a love-hate one, but we are grateful that it has enabled us to keep our group going through this difficult time. We very much hope that by May of this year we will be able to start meeting face to face again. Cross Country Ski Convener: Karen Doucet Meets: Every Tuesday and Friday at 11 a.m. Good news / Bad news: Spring seems to have arrived in Edmonton! The cross-country ski group has wrapped up activities for the season. Winter and Covid challenging so many of our activities, XC is one that allowed us to be outside, exercising and socializing responsibly. Starting in November, we were trying to get out twice each week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. We went to Victoria, Riverside, Hawrelak, Argyll, and Gold Bar. We were a small but enthusiastic group, sometimes just 2 skiers, sometimes 6 or 8. 13 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
We had our final ski (& outdoor picnic lunch) at the Devon Golf Club on Friday, March 5. We were treated to sunny blue skies and perfect conditions. These tracks are maintained by the Devon Nordic Club; a real find; on the list of places to return to next year. 14 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
Drawing Together Convener: Margot Wanke We are all looking forward to spring and summer when our group will be able to meet together outdoors. In the meantime, the ladies of our group continue to draw on their own, either inspired by a theme that is suggested to the whole group or following an inspiration of their own. 15 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
Garden Convener: Pat Petersen and Marcia Bercov Meets: Monthly (usually a Friday, April to October Times vary and locations are in and around Edmonton Well, the garden group has been as dormant as our gardens since the fall-winter activities due to Covid-19. However, Spring is around the corner and many of us will have had the first shot of the vaccine so there is hope. Over the winter months, I have missed being able to go out to the garden to putter around. It was my salvation last summer. I did manage to get to Luminaria for an evening walk this year and I would highly recommend it as the Agha Khan Garden and the walkway to it were decorated with lights. Also, the garden has remained open all winter so you can book a time to go for a walk there. Once there is less ice around I will arrange a time to go out there. It is easy to be socially distanced in the gardens and they do require masks. 16 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
Now that Spring is coming I do recommend going out to one of the many greenhouses that are open even if it's just for a look and a walk around. I call it greenhouse therapy as it always cheers me up. I hope everyone is hanging in and hopefully we can book some events soon. I have included pictures of some of the tomatoes and cucumbers I have started from seed. Take care everyone. Golf Conveners: Bonnie Austen and Gillian Rostoke Meets: Wednesdays at noon Even with Covid 19 and its variants with us, the FWC Group is hoping to golf this year. The driving ranges are now open and there is hope, the courses will open soon. FWC Golf is now in its 30th year. We are presently golfing at Victoria on Wednesdays around noon. If you have not been part of this group before and want to learn more about it, contact Bonnie Austen or Gillian Rostoker Knitting Conveners: Linda Capjack and Linda Sorensen Meets: First Monday of each month from October to May, 1:30 – 3:30 pm The knitting group continues to meet virtually - mostly near the first Monday of each month, which would be our regular meeting time. Members actively share what is on their needles through photos and email. Others join in with comments about projects, 17 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
pictures of pets, updates on what they have been up to and just enjoy hearing/reading about how they are coping with the Covid restrictions. The knitters are thankful to have knitting as a pastime when they are spending a great deal of time at home. No one wants to run out of yarn! 18 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
Tennis Convener: Tricia Unsworth Meets: May to end September: outdoors at southside community courts, various days and times October to end April: Mondays, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., indoors at Saville Centre (Subject to change due to possible COVID restrictions and having sufficient players in the group) If you would like to join us for tennis, when we're able to start up again, please let me know. We're always open to new members at about a 3.5 level. Mondays from 12-1 pm. More details on the FWC website. Walking Group Conveners: Margot Wanke and Sylvia Kernahan Meets: Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. at various outdoor locations On February 25th, our walking group of seven ladies met in the main parking lot of Hawrelak Park. That day, we chose to walk along the path that follows the river behind the Royal Mayfair golf club. The path was excellent and the weather was beautiful. The halfway point found us underneath the Groat Road Bridge. From there we had a glimpse of Emily Murphy Park before we started the return leg of the walk. At the finish, we had walked 7800 steps. As always, Marcia took photos. 19 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
❖ Winter 2021 Events ❖ Spring Luncheon – March 21, 2021 By Karen Doucet Sunday afternoon, March 21, FWC members were invited to attend the 2021 version of a ‘Spring Luncheon’. Of course, there was no lunch! 38 FWC members tuned in for a Zoom presentation by Ellen Schoeck. Ellen’s extremely timely presentation was centred on the history of the Ring Houses and the people who built them and made them home. She spoke of the direct links to many of the University of Alberta’s most prominent historical citizens. From the University’s website: “The Ring Houses have been in the process of decommissioning for nearly two years due to chronic maintenance issues and the houses’ inability to effectively support the university’s academic and research mission. Now that all activities in the Ring Houses have been relocated to more suitable spaces on campus, the utilities have been turned off. The integrity of each house will continue to degrade, leading to the necessary removal of the houses..” A petition and public outcry have led to Plan B which is to sell and relocate the houses. The final decisions have yet to be made. More information from the University can be found here: https://www.ualberta.ca/vice-president-facilities-operations/house-sale.html 20 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
Ellen Schoeck is the author of five histories of the University of Alberta. Ellen has been a member of the FWC and has spoken to the FWC in the past (2006). She was happy to see many familiar faces in our ‘Zoom boxes’. It was also interesting to hear that our own members have some very personal and direct connections to the Ring Houses. For those who missed the presentation, the recorded part is available on YouTube by following this link: https://youtu.be/LBCHI4-96bU Thank you once again to Marilyn Steier for the technical assistance and video editing. Zoom Seminar - February 22. 2021 ‘Keeping Strong as we Age’ By Karen Doucet On Monday afternoon, February 22, FWC held a Zoom seminar entitled ‘Keeping Strong as we Age’ Resident exercise expert, and FWC member, Bonnie Austen, welcomed us to a discussion on the long-term physical and mental benefits of moving, walking, building strength and endurance. After the information, we all participated in some simple exercises that are easy to integrate into daily life. Bonnie was ably supported in the tech department by FWC member Marilyn Steier. While we certainly miss getting together in person, 30 members spent a happy hour, spent chatting with friends. We were even joined by a member, recently moved to Ottawa; it was nice to connect with her. As attendance was limited, and some may want to review the exercises suggested, a video of the presentation has been made. Marilyn and her son Paul have tidied up the recording and posted it on YouTube. Thank you, Marilyn and Paul! 21 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc

❖ Summary of Executive Positions Vacancies ❖ Program Committee The Program Committee plans events of general interest that gather the whole of the membership together. The Program Committee has 2-4 members, elected for a rolling two-year term. The committee schedules venues, events and speakers and works within a budget for these events. Secretary This is an interesting position for anyone who wants to keep track of everything happening in the Club and how we are evolving as an organization. It involves taking minutes of the Executive meetings (four per year, plus the handover meeting to the new Executive in June) and the AGM. While not a big-time commitment, it is an essential one for the Club. Executive. Treasurer The principal responsibility of the Treasurer is to maintain accurate financial records for the FWC. It primarily involves managing the FWC bank accounts by depositing cash & cheque payments and paying invoices and expense claims incurred on behalf of FWC. In consultation with the President, Vice-President and Program Committee, the treasurer prepares a yearly budget. 25 April 2021 http://uab.ca/fwc
