We’re on a wild moose chase The first contingent of moose hunters departed Mosgiel on a bright sunny morning high with anticipation of running down the elusive Fiordland Moose. Later in the day their number would be swollen by yet more moose hunters from Blenhiem, Methven and Oamaru and as far afield as Auckland and the Waikato. Moose hunting this year seems to have struck a chord with club members who are passionate about getting out there and riding their Triumphs. Re-grouping in Lumsden and also catching up with our moose hunters from other parts of the country. It was a record turnout for a Moose Safari with 20 participants, some coming along for the day only. Brent’s wife Sarah and young Skye were also in attendance, good to have a family along to a TOMCC NZ event. 5

Ken, in the middle of the road, is making a moose call, hoping that the echo will bounce of the mountain sides and lure the moose out onto the road where the other riders and bikes will surround it and then tie it onto the bonnet of Mike’s Nissan 350z. John came across Bill with his Triumph America who had just ridden out of the Hollyford Valley bush where he was sure he had spotted a moose. Of note is also the Triumph T140, the “Slayer” of Klondyke Corner fame (see Triumph Times, Dec 2014).

Otago Southland Gorge Road Overnighter After an initially wet start leaving Dunedin we were soon able to conjure up motorcycling magic through those seductive curvaceous bends of the Catlins highway. A warm reception with a glass of port awaited our arrival at Bill’s place in Gorge Road followed by a delightful introduction to his converted general store. It’s worth a visit just to see his unique collection of Triumph, military and Speights memorabilia. Along with some of Bill’s friends and local TOMCC NZ members the afternoon and evening (and early hours of the morning) were spent in delightful conversation and social companionship. At about 1 o’clock in the morning Dean and Sandy enjoyed a quick blast up and down the road on Bill’s Tiger Cub. Wonder what the neighbours were thinking! Some of our Dunedin members on the way south through the Catlins, stopped in at Owaka’s unique biker book store, Paper Road, and admired some of the more unusual bikes that shared space with equally unusual literary gems. Nothing like a bonfire to bring out the primitive need for social gathering. Bill did us proud with his catering. The very generous and endless supply of whitebait patties was followed up by enormous barbecued T-bone steaks with potato salad and coleslaw. 10
