Newsletter 36 Newsletter 06June 8 March 2014 2021 KIA ORA FROM KYRAN Talofa lava Kahurangi aiga and supporters! Last week we enjoyed celebrating Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa - Samoan Language Week and were undeterred by it being a three day week which included trips and the Eastern Zone cross country event. Samoan Language Week gives our students of all backgrounds the chance to learn some basic Samoan and gives our Samoan tamaiti (children) the opportunity to share their extensive knowledge in the classroom quite often taking on the role of teacher, as they know more. Fri 11 June School Assembly Hosted by Waka Rimu Rua which is the class that learns with Judy 2:15pm Tues 22 Jun Spell-a-thon Testing Day More information on page 2. Fri 25 June We are really hoping our tamariki and whānau are gathering sponsors and Eastern Zone Kapa Haka supporting their children to learn their Spell-a-thon words. As mentioned in the Festival information that went home we only have one school fundraiser every two years All students which is highly unusual for a school. For those of you who are new to Kahurangi we promise you this is the only time we focus on raising money. We take a lot of pride in being a 100% free school. Although there are now more schools that are free since the government introduced their new donation incentive we have always been free and know most other schools still charge for things such as after-school sports and various other things. Therefore we are really really hoping that whānau will get behind this fundraiser and support their child to raise funds for our school. We’ve also added the incentive of prizes for amounts of money raised which will provide some extra encouragement.
A new Teacher Aide has joined our staff Hannah started working for us on a casual basis but we’ve now been able to secure enough funding to employ her for the remainder of the year which we’re really happy about. Hannah supports students in our younger classes. We’re glad to have you join our kura Hannah! Does your child play sport for a Kahurangi Team? If you’ve answered ‘yes’ we’re asking that you are mindful of the commitment they made to their team (and our school) when signing up. I’m hearing that there are many players not turning up to practices or their games because they don’t feel like it or they’ve got something else they’d rather be doing. Whānau, when your child does this they’re not honouring their commitment. We ask you to help us as their parent by insisting that they do in fact show up and see their committment through. We were proud of every single child who ran in our cross country! More photos can be found on our website. When we have our school cross country we know that for some children this is a really fun event and for others it’s an event that they dread. I would really like to thank those whānau who sent their tamariki to school to compete despite their child disliking it or it being something that they’re not good at. We believe at Kahurangi that doing this supports your child to build their resilience, and allow them to learn not everything they do will be easy or something they’ll be good at.
