GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY – Today is traditionally called “Good Shepherd Sunday” because the gospel tells us about our Lord Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd who never leaves his flock untended. It is also designated as World Day of Prayer for Vocations. I urge you each day to say a prayer for more Priests, Brothers and Sisters to serve God and His people. Over the course of our parish history, we have been blessed with many vocations to the priesthood and Religious life from St. Andrew's. However, a parish of our size should have many young men in the seminary and many young women in the convent. Our good friend, Fr. Kizito Kirenga who has helped us out during the summers, tells me that at his parish in Uganda they have 4 or 5 ordinations per year. Amazing! Our prayers, good advice and example can help many others to answer to Lord’s call to service in the Church. WELCOME BISHOP FREYER AND LAZARITES! – Today we are honored to welcome Bishop Timothy Freyer, the Auxiliary Bishop of Orange, to our parish. Bishop Freyer will be celebrating the 9:30 a.m. Mass which will be attended by the Knights and Ladies of the Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. Welcome! NEW E-LIBRARY – Last week we announced a new service to our parishioners: the St. Junipero Serra electronic library. This is a wonderful new resource for our parishioners to read good Catholic books and deepen their faith. Please check out the information elsewhere in this bulletin. NEW CHANT CARDS – You will find beautiful new chant cards in the pews. These contain all the chants which the people are to know for Mass. The particular edition in the pews right now is the one for Easter time. They will be changed for Ordinary Time, Lent and Advent as needed and they have the chants particular to those liturgical seasons. WE'RE FEATURED! – This week I received a wonderful newly published book entitled Monuments, Marvels and Miracles - A Traveler's Guide to Catholic America by Marion Amberg published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book details some of the most beautiful churches and shrines in our country. St. Andrew Church is one of only 3 churches featured in Southern California (other two being the Santa Barbara Mission and St. Timothy's in West LA) as being one of the most beautiful churches in the country. Of course, all of us know that already but it is wonderful to have our parish treasure featured for others to discover it as well.
MONTH OF MARY – The month of May is traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. During this month we will have the traditional “Crowning of Mary” by our School and Religious Education children. The May Crowning by the school will take place on May 13th, Feat of Our Lady of Fatima, at 1:00 p.m. followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. I encourage you this coming month especially to pray the Rosary which is the most wonderful of Marian devotions. EMAIL SCAMS NEVER SEEM TO END – This week one of our parishioners informed me that he had received an email pretending to be from me asking him to contact me "for help." Thankfully, he is wise enough to be suspicious of these emails, so he contacted the parish office directly. Once again, this was a fake email using a fake email address which is not mine. Please know that I will not send you unsolicited emails asking you to simply contact me. If you receive an email supposedly from me which just asks in general for you to contact me for any reason without specificity, it is fake. Same if it asks for money, gift cards, etc. All fake. Do not fall for these scams! MASSES ONLINE – As some of our parishioners are not yet able to return to church in person, we are still livestreaming our Sunday Masses at 9:30 a.m. in English and 11:00 a.m. in Spanish. FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR: Fourth Sunday of Easter Aprl 25, 2021 Misericordia Domini plena est terra, alleluia: verbo Dei cæli firmati sunt, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. Exsultate iusti in Domino: rectos decet collaudatio. With the mercy of the Lord is the earth filled, alleluia: the word of God made the heavens, alleluia, alleluia. Psalm verse: Exult, ye just, in the Lord: praise from the upright is fitting. The image of the Good Shepherd stands out prominently in today’s readings, particularly the Gospel. And what an image for these times! In spite of the difficulty of these times, the Good Shepherd is always with us. Through nearly a year of exile from the House of God, he walked with us; in our joyous return to the House of God, he welcomes us. The entrance hymn today speaks to this, and reminds us the comfort of our faith: “In heavenly love abiding, No change my heart shall fear; And safe is such confiding, For nothing changes here: The storm may roar without me, My heart may low be laid; But God is round about me; How can I be dismayed?”] Indeed how can we be dismayed, if we have faith? Long-term fear of a new disease, financial dislocation, long-term separation from loved ones—this test is one most of us never had to endure before this past year. The extended fear of the unknown can seem intolerable; but there is one knows our sorrow and has walked with us. He is with us now, to welcome us back to the holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It is, then, in faith—and with hope born of the experience of salvation—that we can pray the last verse of our entrance hymn: “Green pastures are before me which yet I have not seen; Bright skies will soon be o’er me, Where darkest clouds have been. My hope I cannot measure, The path to life is free; My Savior has my treasure, And he will walk with me.”] In our continuing and gradual return of public worship and the sacraments, we return to the study of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, the guide that Holy Mother Church gives us for the celebration of the Holy Mass (www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/general-instruction-of-the-roman- missal/). We mentioned last week how it is the rule which governs the work of we who prepare the celebration of the Mass. Those of us who make up the liturgical synaxis—the assembly of the faithful and the priest- celebrant—find guidance of our attitude and actions at worship guided by this document. Certainly, music selections are made according to its principles. GIRM reminds us that the celebration of Mass is “the center of the whole of Christian life for the Church both universal and local, as well as for each of the faithful individually. For in it is found the high point both of the action by which God sanctifies the world in Christ and of the worship that the human race offers to the Father, adoring him through Christ, the Son of God, in the Holy Spirit,” so that the entirety of Christian life is “bound up with it, flow from it, and are ordered to it.” Since this is a column about music, we will keep our focus primarily on that. MES DE MARÍA – El mes de mayo se dedica tradicionalmente a la Santísima Virgen María. Durante este mes tendremos la tradicional “Coronación de María” a cargo de nuestros niños de Escuela y Educación Religiosa. La Coronación de Mayo por parte de la escuela tendrá lugar el 13 de mayo, Hazaña de Nuestra Señora de Fátima, a la 1:00 p.m. seguido de la Bendición del Santísimo Sacramento. Les animo este próximo mes especialmente a rezar el Rosario, que es la más maravillosa de las devociones marianas. LAS ESTAFAS POR CORREO ELECTRÓNICO NUNCA PARECEN TERMINAR – Esta semana uno de nuestros feligreses me informó que había recibido un correo electrónico que pretendía ser mío pidiéndole que se pusiera en contacto conmigo "para pedir ayuda". Afortunadamente, es lo suficientemente inteligente como para sospechar de estos correos electrónicos, por lo que se comunicó directamente con la oficina parroquial. Una vez más, este fue un correo electrónico falso con una dirección de correo electrónico falsa que no es mía. Tengan en cuenta que no le enviaré correos electrónicos no solicitados pidiéndole que simplemente se comunique conmigo. Si recibe un correo electrónico supuestamente mío que solo le pide en general que se comunique conmigo por cualquier motivo sin especificidad, es falso. Lo mismo si pide dinero, tarjetas regalo, etc. Todo falso. ¡No caiga en estas estafas! MISAS EN LÍNEA – Como algunos de nuestros feligreses aún no pueden regresar a la iglesia en persona, todavía estamos transmitiendo en vivo nuestras Misas dominicales a las 9:30 a.m. en inglés y a las 11:00 a.m. en español. DEL DIRECTOR DE MUSICA: Cuarto Domingo de Pascua 25 de abril de 2021 Misericordia Domini plena est terra, aleluya: verbo Dei cæli firmati sunt, aleluya, aleluya. PD. Exsultate iusti in Domino: rectos decet collaudatio. De la misericordia del Señor está llena la tierra, aleluya; la palabra de Dios hizo los cielos, aleluya, aleluya. Versículo del salmo: Alégrate, justos, en el Señor: la alabanza de los rectos es apropiada. La imagen del Buen Pastor se destaca de manera destacada en las lecturas de hoy, particularmente en el Evangelio. ¡Y qué imagen para estos tiempos! A pesar de la dificultad de estos tiempos, el Buen Pastor está siempre con nosotros. Durante casi un año de exilio de la Casa de Dios, caminó con nosotros; en nuestro regreso gozoso a la Casa de Dios, él nos acoge. El himno de entrada de hoy habla de esto y nos recuerda el consuelo de nuestra fe en el Buen Pastor: Y cuando en valle de dolor o muerte deba andar, no sentiré ningún temor, pues Él me guardará.] De hecho, ¿cómo podemos desanimarnos si tenemos fe? Miedo a largo plazo a una nueva enfermedad, dislocación financiera, separación a largo plazo de nuestros seres queridos: esta prueba es una que la mayoría de nosotros nunca tuvo que soportar antes del año pasado. El miedo prolongado a lo desconocido puede parecer intolerable; pero hay uno que conoce nuestro dolor y ha caminado con nosotros. Él está ahora con nosotros para darnos la bienvenida al santo Sacrificio de la Misa. Es, pues, en la fe —y con la esperanza nacida de la experiencia de la salvación— que podemos rezar la estrofa de nuestro himno de entrada: Es sabio y fiel mi Buen Pastor, jamás me dejará; con su cayado, mi Señor, Aliento me dará.] En nuestro retorno continuo y gradual del culto público y los sacramentos, volvemos al estudio de la Instrucción General del Misal Romano, la guía que la Santa Madre Iglesia nos da para la celebración de la Santa Misa (www.usccb.org/prayer -y-adoración / la-misa / instrucción-general-del-misal-romano /). Mencionamos la semana pasada cómo es la regla que gobierna el trabajo de los que preparamos la celebración de la Misa. Los que formamos la sinaxis litúrgica —la asamblea de los fieles y el sacerdote- celebrante— encontramos orientación en nuestra actitud y acciones en el culto guiadas por este documento. Ciertamente, las selecciones de música se realizan de acuerdo con sus principios. GIRM nos recuerda que la celebración de la Misa es “el centro de toda la vida cristiana de la Iglesia tanto universal como local, así como de cada uno de los fieles individualmente. Porque en él se encuentra el punto culminante tanto de la acción por la cual Dios santifica al mundo en Cristo como del culto que el género humano ofrece al Padre, adorándolo por Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, en el Espíritu Santo ”, así que la totalidad de la vida cristiana está "ligada a ella, fluye de ella y está ordenada a ella". Dado que esta es una columna sobre música, nos centraremos principalmente en eso.
