HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY! – Today we wish all our mothers a happy Mother’s Day. May the Lord bless each of them for their generous vocation. Our Mothers’ Day Novena begins tomorrow. If you would like to enroll your mother, sister, Godmother, etc. (living or deceased) in the Novena of Masses, please drop off at the Pastoral Center the special envelope you received in the mail or enroll via email by sending your request to our Parish Secretary, Griselda Saucedo at: gsaucedo@standrewpasadena.org. This weekend is the last opportunity to enroll. FIRST COMMUNIONS AND CONFIRMATIONS - Several families have contacted me to inquire about the status of our First Communion and Confirmation Masses. Unfortunately, due to the fluid nature of the current crisis, we do not have any firm answers at this time. For now, they are postponed, and we hope to be able to celebrate them as soon as the church is permitted to be opened once again. I know this is frustrating for everybody and I look forward to the day we can celebrate these wonderful events with all of you! WEDDINGS - So far all our weddings for March, April, May and June have been postponed. Some even in July have also been postponed. This is incredibly sad for these couples and I ask that you please pray for them during this time. Our annual "communal wedding" has also been postponed. As soon as we know when we can reschedule, we will contact all involved. PROMOTION FOR MR. DOMINGO - We congratulate Mr. Raphael (Rocky) Domingo on being promoted to be the new Principal of Alemany High School in Mission Hills effective this summer. This is a wonderful opportunity for him, and we wish him well. At the same time, however, it is a loss for us since he has been a wonderful Principal at our Parish School. I hope to announce his replacement very soon and the School Board and I are working diligently to ensure that there is a smooth transition. It is our firm commitment that St. Andrew School continue to provide the finest Catholic education in Pasadena and the surrounding area. We will keep you posted. SPRING CLEANING IN TIME OF PANDEMIC - Most of us have the practice of doing some Spring cleaning during this time of the year. It is an opportunity to go through closets and cabinets and discard trash and perhaps donate clothing and other items to those who can use them. Because the church, school and office are all closed, we have been able to do this in a very thorough way in the past few weeks. All the storage locations in the Pastoral Center, school and church have been reviewed and a great deal of trash has been thrown out. You would be amazed at the amount of junk that accumulated over time. I have been throwing out used missalettes dating back over 10 years. All were in locked cabinets and closets. Why? Who knows? But they are all gone now. This has provided a great deal more empty spaces which can now be cleaned out and utilized more efficiently. Our Altar Server Sacristy, for example, will now be back in its traditional space which is the room directly behind the chapel. Those closets had been full of junk and now are empty and able to be used for their original purpose. As a result, we will be able to utilize the room recently used for Altar Servers in a different way. If any of our parish groups have stuff stored in the Pastoral Center basement or church basement, please contact Griselda Saucedo at the Pastoral Center to arrange a review of storage so that those items which are useful can be retained and stored and whatever is obsolete can be discarded. FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR Fifth Sunday of Easter May 10, 2020 In Exile Surréxit Dóminus—Surréxit Dóminus vere! Allelúia! The Lord has risen—The Lord has risen indeed! Alleluia! “Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done wondrous things! In the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. His right hand and holy arm brought victory!” So reads the Introit to today’s Mass. Overcome with paschal joy, every land and every people exults in God’s praise. In the celebration of the Mass, we join with the heavenly Powers, with the angelic hosts, to sing together the unending hymn of God’s glory. And we, in the midst of our enforced exile from the Domus Dei, the House of God, rely on God’s boundless mercy—in which we place our whole trust for deliverance. Today’s first reading tells of the first deacons of the church. These men were chosen to go out and serve the temporal needs of the Church so that the Apostles—the earliest bishops and priests—could focus on the spiritual needs of the Church. These deacons went out, and, selfless and without any thought to personal gain or hidden agenda, served the church, some unto death. Stephen, the first man called to be a deacon, would later become the protomartyr, or “first martyr” of the Church (and who, incidentally, is the patron saint of my own patron saint, Stephen of Hungary, the first Christian king). We return to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM). Recall, it can be found at www.usccb. org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/general-instruction-of-the-roman-missal/. The General Instruction, the rule which governs the celebration of the Mass, “the center of the whole of Christian life for the Church both universal and local,” makes clear that the entirety of Christian life is “bound up with it, flow from it, and are ordered to it.” This shows the importance of our preparation: our work is bound up with the source and summit of our very existence! The General Instruction gives detailed instruction for each portion of the Mass. The musical parts may be divided into movements with texts that never (or almost never) change, and those parts with text that changes according to the liturgical day. The texts that never change are called the Ordinary (from the Latin word ordinárius, meaning “regular,” “usual,” or “customary”) of the Mass, while the texts that change for each liturgical day are called the Proper (from the Latin term próprius, meaning “particular,” “characteristic [of something],” or “[one’s] own”) of the Mass. The parts of the Ordinary of the Mass sung by the choir and congregation include the Kyrie, Gloria, Creed, Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation, Our Father, and Agnus Dei. The texts of these movements do not change throughout the year, though the Gloria is omitted during non-feast and non-solemnity days during Lent and Advent. These parts of the Mass were historically the last to be relinquished by the congregation, and are most of these movements are normatively sung by the congregation. The parts of the Proper sung by choir and congregation include the Introit (entrance chant), Gradual (or Responsorial Psalm), the Gospel Acclamation (normally “alleluia,” but replaced by a different text from Ash Wednesday through Good Friday), the Offertory chant, and the Communion chant. These parts are given specific texts for each liturgical day and were traditionally the purview of the schola cantorum, or choir. Today, the General Instruction clarifies the role of all of the Propers and Ordinary of the Mass. Next week, we will begin to examine what the General Instruction has to say about each, as found in Chapter II, The Structure of the Mass, Its Elements, and Its Parts.

"Canta al Señor una nueva canción, porque ha hecho cosas maravillosas! A la vista de las naciones ha revelado su justicia. ¡Su mano derecha y su brazo santo trajeron la victoria!" Así lee el Introit a la Misa de hoy. Superar con alegría pascual, cada tierra y cada pueblo se regocijo en la alabanza de Dios. En la celebración de la Misa, nos unimos a los Poderes celestiales, con las huestes angelicales, para cantar juntos el himno interminable de la gloria de Dios. Y nosotros, en medio de nuestro exilio forzado de la Domus Dei, la Casa de Dios, confiamos en la misericordia sin límites de Dios, en la que depositamos toda nuestra confianza para la liberación. La primera lectura de hoy habla de los primeros diáconos de la iglesia.
