THANK YOU FR. PEROZICH - This weekend we bid farewell to Fr. Richard Perozich who has been helping the last couple of weeks. We are very grateful to him to take time during his retirement to assist here at St. Andrew's while I took a week of vacation and during Fr. Rueda's vacation as well. Thank you! WELCOME FR. MONTEJANO - As Fr. Perozich leaves us we welcome Fr. John Montejano who will be helping for the remainder of the month of August until the arrival of our new Associate Pastor on September 1st. Fr. Montejano is one of my classmates from the Ordination class of 1994. He is currently serving the Archdiocese as Chaplain and teacher at Bishop Amat High School. Welcome Fr. Montejano! SCHOOL STARTS SOON! – The first day of school at St. Andrew's School is on August 26th. There are still a few spaces open in some of the grades. If you have a child whom you would like to enroll in our school, please do so this week by stopping by the school office during office hours. Remember that St. Andrew's School offers the finest education in our city at a most competitive cost. Do not deprive your child of a Catholic education! This past week I had a great meeting with our wonderful faculty to review the challenges of reopening with remote learning our new academic year. We have an excellent team of teachers, who together with our new Principal, Jae Kim are definitely up to the challenge. Among the points I reviewed with them are the following: - After my priorities of administration of the Sacraments, our Parish school is my top priority. I am fully committed to the ongoing strength of our Parish School. - When I arrived last summer, I made it a goal to get our school enrollment to 400 students within the next 3 years. Due to the current pandemic, this has been slowed down but I am still fully committed to that number as soon as possible. - The way we will reach 400 students is by having two classrooms for each grade. This will allow us to have smaller class size and yet still educate as many children as possible. - St. Andrew's School has a tremendous educational heritage since its founding in 1897. Our future is bright and we will build on this excellent foundation. - We are fully committed to providing not only the best academic education possible, but also the most solid and faithful Catholic education possible. Our children must be given the tools necessary to fulfill their God given vocations in the modern world with the firm foundation of their Catholic faith. - We are currently very well positioned for future growth due to the excellent physical state of our education building (just completed a new roof) as well as the plan for the new School Gymnasium/Parish Hall planned for the corner of Raymond and Chestnut. - We will be the only Catholic Elementary School participating in the International Baccalaureate Program in the Archdiocese and the only Elementary School participating in the city of Pasadena. This will provide our students with the best tools possible to prepare for high school. Our school will reopen with in person learning for the earliest grades for 3 and 3 1/2-year old. The remainder of the grades will reopen with remote learning to begin and then in person learning as soon as the state of California allows us to do so. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN – Please remember that if you have a child who has not received First Communion or Confirmation, registration is taking place right now each Sunday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the school parking lot. The age for reception of First Holy Communion is 7 years old. Since it is a two-year program, this means that when your child enters the first grade at the age of 6, he should be registered for First Holy Communion. In this way, at the age of 7 the child will receive First Communion. I have noticed in the last couple of years that many of our children receiving First Communion are much older, sometimes even as old as 13 or 14. This is a very sad situation because this means that these children have been deprived of the Blessed Sacrament for many years. It is a terrible abuse. Please ensure that your children start receiving formal religious instruction at the age of 6 so they are not deprived of the Sacrament of the Most Holy Eucharist. ONGOING REPAIRS - While the parish office is closed, we are taking advantage of the lull in traffic to do some needed repairs in the Pastoral Center. Last week new tile flooring was installed in the public restrooms. The previous vinyl plastic flooring had completely worn out and looked terrible. The new permanent tile floors look great! This week we will replace the old tile work in the Pastoral Center kitchen and replace the sinks as well. These also were completely rotted. In the church, the two beautiful angel stained glass windows in the Sacred Heart Chapel have been removed and are currently being restored by Judson Studios. They should be back in a few weeks. Both were buckled and steadily sliding down in their window frames. In the piazza, we are currently in the process of a restoration project of the cement casings surrounding two of the fountains. Parishioners had pointed out to me that the cement was falling apart and the rust was appearing from the rebar inside of the cement. Parishioners are always great at showing me repair needs! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! - On behalf of Shane Akerman, our former Confirmation Director, I want to express my deep gratitude to the generous parishioners who have now completely paid off his student debt, so he is free to enter the Dominican Fathers Novitiate. FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR: Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 16, 2020 Series: Vatican II and Music This week, we continue our review of chapter two of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (which can be found at http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/general-instruction-of-the-roman-missal/ girm-chapter-2.cfm), the guide by which the Sacrifice of the Mass is celebrated. Last week, we noted that the General Instruction said that the celebration of the Mass is by its nature “communitarian” that the dialogues between Priest and congregation and the acclamations hold a great significance because they bring about and foster communion between Priest and people. The dialogues during Mass are: the Sign of the Cross and Greeting; the invitation to prayer at the Collect, the dialogues at the end of the readings (though the readings are now typically done by the laity), and at the beginning and at the end of the Gospel; at the Offertory (“Pray, brethren…”), and the greatest of all dialogues, the Preface Dialogue, the dialogue after the Lord’s Prayer (“The peace of the Lord be with you always…”) and another at the Prayer after Communion. All of these dialogues can indeed be sung. And ought to be, depending on the level of solemnity of the celebration. One document, in fact, the Second Instruction on the Right Implementation of the Vatican Council: Musicam Sacram, indicates that these are the things that ought to be sung before anything else. The Ordinary of the Mass is the part of Mass, other than the dialogues mentioned above, that does not change from Sunday to Sunday (though the Creed is omitted except on Sundays and Solemnities and the Gloria is omitted except on Feasts and Solemnities and Sundays outside of Lent and Advent). In Section II, paragraphs 36 and 37 we read: “36. Other parts, most useful for expressing and fostering the active participation of the faithful, and which are assigned to the whole gathering, include especially the Penitential Act, the Profession of Faith, the Universal Prayer, and the Lord’s Prayer. 37. Finally, among other formulas: a) Some constitute an independent rite or act, such as the Gloria in excelsis (Glory to God in the highest), the Responsorial Psalm, the Alleluia and Verse before the Gospel, the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy), the Memorial Acclamation, and the chant after Communion; b) Others, on the other hand, accompany some other rite, such as the chants at the Entrance, at the Offertory, at the fraction (Agnus Dei, Lamb of God) and at Communion. We will examine in greater detail next week the categorization of these parts of the Ordinary.
GRACIAS PADRE PEROZICH - Este fin de semana nos despedimos del Padre Richard Perozich, quien ha estado ayudando las últimas semanas. Deben estar de regreso en unas semanas. Ambas estaban abrochadas y se estaban cayendo en sus marcos de ventanas. En la Piazza, actualmente estamos en proceso de un proyecto de restauración de las carcasas de cemento que rodean dos de las fuentes. DEL DIRECTOR DE MUSICA Vigésimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 16 de agosto de 2020 Serie: Vaticano II y Música Esta semana, continuamos con nuestra revisión del capítulo dos de la Instrucción General del Misal Romano (que se puede encontrar en http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/general- instruction-of- the-roman-missal / girm-chapter-2.cfm), la guía por la que se celebra el Sacrificio de la Misa. La semana pasada, notamos que la Instrucción General decía que la celebración de la Misa es por naturaleza “comunitaria” que los diálogos entre el sacerdote y la congregación y las aclamaciones tienen un gran significado porque provocan y fomentan la comunión entre el sacerdote y el pueblo. Los diálogos durante la Misa son: la Señal de la Cruz y el Saludo; la invitación a la oración en la Colecta, los diálogos al final de las lecturas (aunque ahora las lecturas las hacen típicamente los laicos), y al principio y al final del Evangelio; en el Ofertorio (“Orad, hermanos…”), y el más grande de todos los diálogos, el Prefacio Diálogo, el diálogo después del Padre Nuestro (“La paz del Señor sea siempre con vosotros ...”) y otro en la Oración después de la Comunión . De hecho, todos estos diálogos se pueden cantar. Y debería serlo, según el nivel de solemnidad de la celebración. Un documento, de hecho, la Segunda Instrucción sobre la correcta implementación del Concilio Vaticano: Musicam Sacram, indica que estas son las cosas que deberían cantarse antes que cualquier otra cosa.
