                                     Welcome to God’s House
God - pleasing obedience must begin in the heart, crushed with his law and comforted
with his gospel. As we pray in the Prayer of the Day: “Help us avoid whatever is
wicked and harmful, and guide us in the way that leads to our salvation…”

THE COMMON SERVICE (HYMNAL, P. 15)

Opening Hymn Praise to the Lord, the Almighty #234:1-3
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!
Let all who hear Now to his temple draw near,
Joining in glad adoration!
Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things is wondrously reigning
And, as on wings of an eagle, uplifting, sustaining.
Have you not seen All that is needful has been
Sent by his gracious ordaining?
Praise to the Lord, who has fearfully, wondrously, made you,
Health has bestowed and, when heedlessly falling, has stayed you.
What need or grief Ever has failed of relief?
Wings of his mercy did shade you.

Invocation
M: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.
C: ♫ Amen.
Confession of Sins
M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to
God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us
     forgiveness.
C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have
disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil
and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now
and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus
Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
♫ Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us.
M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to
be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and
by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the
Son + and of the Holy Spirit.
C: ♫ Amen.
M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

Song of Praise Praise to the Lord, the Almighty #234:4-5
C:   ♫ Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you;
Surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do
As with his love he befriends you.
Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him!
     Let the Amen sound from his people again;
     Gladly forever adore him!

Prayer of the Day
M: The Lord be with you.
C: ♫ And also with you.
M: Lord Jesus Christ, preserve the congregation of believers with your never-failing
mercy. Help us avoid whatever is wicked and harmful, and guide us in the way
that leads to our salvation; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: ♫ Amen.

First Lesson Deuteronomy 4:1, 2, 6-9
Now, Israel, hear the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that
you may live and may go in and take possession of the land the Lord, the God of your
ancestors, is giving you. 2 Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract
from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you…
6
Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the
nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a
wise and understanding people.” 7 What other nation is so great as to have their gods
near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him? 8 And what
other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of
laws I am setting before you today?
9
Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things
your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them
to your children and to their children after them.
Psalm 119c CW, page 111

Oh, how I love your law!*
I meditate on it all day long.
I have more insight than all my teachers,*
for I meditate on your statutes.
I have more understanding than the elders,*
for I obey your precepts. Refrain
I have kept my feet from every evil path*
so that I might obey your Word.
I have not departed from your laws,*
for you yourself have taught me.
How sweet are your words to my taste,*
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Glory be to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,*
is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain

Second Lesson James 1:17-27
17
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the
heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us
birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.
19
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen,
slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce
the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil
that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
22
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
23
Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who
looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and
immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect
law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but
doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
26
Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their
tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our
Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their
distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Verse of the Day Jeremiah 15:15
M: Alleluia. Your words became a joy to me, and the delight of my heart. Alleluia.
C: ♫ Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Gospel Mark 7:1-8, 14, 15, 21-23
After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings:
C: ♫ Glory be to you, O Lord!

The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem
gathered around Jesus 2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that
were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless
they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.
4
When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they
observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.)
5
So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live
according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled
hands?”
6
He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is
written:
“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
7
  They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’
8
You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.” ….
Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and
understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them.
Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”…. 21 For it is from within,
out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder,
22
adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All
these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

After the Gospel, the congregation sings:
C: ♫ Praise be to you, O Christ!

Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was
buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He
ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn of the Day O God, My Faithful God CW #459
O God, my faithful God, O Fountain ever flowing,
Who good and perfect gifts In mercy are bestowing,
Give me a healthy frame, And may I have within
A conscience free from blame, A soul unhurt by sin.
Grant me the strength to do With ready heart and willing
Whatever you command, My calling here fulfilling,
That I do what I should While trusting you to bless
The outcome for my good, For you must give success.
Keep me from saying things That later need recalling;
Grant that no idle words May from my lips be falling,
But then, when in my place I must and ought to speak,
My words grant pow’r and grace Lest I offend the weak.
Lord, let me win my foes With kindly words and actions,
And let me find good friends For counsel and correction.
Help me, as you have taught, To love both great and small
And by your Spirit’s might To live in peace with all.

Sermon Mark 7:1-8, 14, 15, 21-23
                                               Truly Clean
After the sermon, the congregation sings:
C: ♫ Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast
me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with your free
       Spirit. Amen.

Offering Hymn We Give Thee But Thine Own CW #485:1-2

The members of Zion have joined together to do the Lord's work in this community and around the world. If
you are a visitor, please don’t feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry.

C:     ♫ We give thee but thine own, whate’er the gift may be;
All that we have is thine alone, a trust, O Lord, from thee.

May we thy bounties thus as stewards true receive
And gladly, as thou blessest us, to thee our firstfruits give.

Prayer of the Church and the Lord’s Prayer
Hymn Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing CW #340
Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of his grace!
My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad, The honors of your name.
The name of Jesus calms our fears And bids our sorrows cease.
’Tis music in the sinners ears; ’Tis life and health and peace.
He breaks the pow’r of canceled sin; He sets the pris’ner free.
His blood can make the foulest clean; His blood avails for me.
See all your sins on Jesus laid; The Lamb of God was slain.
His life was once an off’ring made That you might live again.
Glory to God and praise and love Be ever, ever giv’n
By saints below and saints above, The Church in earth and heav’n.

Prayer
M: Blessed Lord, you have given us your Holy Scriptures for our learning. May we
so hear them, read, learn, and take them to heart, that being strengthened and
comforted by your holy Word, we may cling to the blessed hope of everlasting
life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: ♫ Amen.

The Blessing
M: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be
gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.
C: ♫ Amen. Amen. Amen.

Closing Hymn The Church’s One Foundation CW #538:1-2
The Church’s one foundation Is Jesus Christ, her Lord;
She is his new creation By water and the Word.
From heav’n he came and sought her To be his holy bride;
With his own blood he bought her, And for her life he died.
Elect from ev’ry nation, Yet one o’er all the earth;
Her charter of salvation: One Lord, one faith, one birth.
One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses, With ev’ry grace endued.

Old Meditations Instead of throwing your old Meditations away, bring them back to
church and put them on the cabinet near the coat rack. They will eventually be
mailed to thousands of prisoners seeking Christian materials. Most inmates are
unchurched, and many are searching for answers to their spiritual questions.
Why a new hymnal?
• A curated and consolidated collection of hymns. God blesses his Church in every
generation with talented poets and composers who add their voices to those from
past generations. The new hymnal retains the best of old treasures (from our current
hymnal and supplement) while making room for new treasures. Careful curation
assures not only doctrinal faithfulness but also a good balance across seasons and
themes. God’s love in Christ remains at the center of worship that clearly proclaims
law and gospel.

• A complete and flexible musical psalter. In the late 20th century denominations
throughout the world (re-)discovered the value and delight of singing psalms. One
happy surprise with our 1993 WELS hymnal was that psalm singing became widely
appreciated. But only one musical style was used. The new psalter features multiple
musical settings in a variety of styles for all 150 psalms.

• A singer’s book. In contrast to some of the musical settings in our current hymnal,
more hymns are set in straightforward and familiar four-part harmony, making it
easier for people to sing in harmony. Some familiar canticles will also appear in
harmony rather than melody-only (CW pages 16, 22, 23, 46, 48.)

• The blessing of digital resources. Christian Worship: Service Builder will streamline
the work of worship planners and church offices. In many cases the time saved easily
pays for the annual cost. Two additional products are: Musician’s Resource
(downloadable files for involving a wide variety of instrumentalists) and an app that
brings hymnal resources to smartphones or tablets for various personal and family
uses.
• Stay ahead of the curve. When our current hymnal arrived in 1993, we were long
past the time when a new hymnal was needed. The wisdom and benefit of staying
ahead of the curve was apparent in 2008 when adoption of the hymnal supplement
far outpaced expectations. Simply put: it is good to keep liturgical worship both fresh
and strongly rooted in our heritage.

• Reflect our unity in Christ. Sharing the same hymnal is not necessary for spiritual
unity. But there are benefits when we do share common worship resources. Think of
WELS guests or transferring members at churches throughout our country. A familiar
core of worship resources and a shared worship philosophy are welcome touchpoints
of familiarity and comfort.

Yes, I would like to purchase the new Christian Worship hymnal for my (our)personal
use.
