THE CHURCH AT WORSHIP May 15, 2022 Fifth Sunday of Easter _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ WE GATHER IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD *The Congregation is Invited to Stand in Body or Spirit Prelude Nicole Pesce Welcome and Announcements Minute for Mission Pentecost Special Offering Marsha Malsack Opening Prayer Most gracious God, as we continue to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, we pray that we may be bound together in Christian love and that our faith and fellowship may be a witness through which Your spirit will bring others into Your church. We humbly thank You for Your many blessings You have given us. We ask that we may learn how to truly be Easter people and always remember that we are celebrating resurrection day every day. Amen. *Call to Worship We gather in the name of the living Christ to worship God. Surely, God is in this place and calls us to worship in spirit and in truth. God’s love is for you and for all people everywhere. That we may share God’s love and life, may we be renewed in the refreshing Spirit of the living Christ. The living Christ is with us. Praise the Lord *Hymn “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken” #446 Blue Hymnal Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; God, whose word cannot be broken, Formed thee for a blest abode. On the rock of ages founded, What can shake thy sure repose? With salvation’s walls surrounded, Thou may’st smile at all thy foes. 2
See, the streams of living waters, Springing from eternal love, Well supply thy sons and daughters And all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river Ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace, which like the Lord the giver, Never fails from age to age. Round each habitation hovering, See the cloud and fire appear For a glory and a covering, Showing that the Lord is near. Thus deriving from their banner Light by night and shade by day, Safe they feed upon the manna Which God gives them when they pray. WE LISTEN TO THE WORD OF GOD Gospel John 13: 31-35 #102 New Testament This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. “They Could Not” by Ron Harris & Claire Cloninger Priscilla Hoskins, Soprano Nicole Pesce, Piano Prayer of Confession Rev. Sheryl Campbell Gracious and loving God, as we reflect on the wonder and glory of Your being, and the depth of Your love for us, we are conscious of our failure to learn from You and from the sacrificial love of Jesus. So often our understanding of glory is linked with prestige and power and position. Jesus’ understanding of glory was linked to a love that was prepared to go to the uttermost limits of love. Forgive us and those who seek selfish pursuit of glory that takes precedence over Jesus’ command to love one another as He has loved us. 3
Help us to love “As He has loved us’” for we confess our lack of the ability at times to make Jesus’ self-giving love the truly identifying mark of our faith. Remind us, O God, that even when our love falters, Your love remains constant. You have the power to make all things new. Fill our hearts and minds with Jesus’ selfless love so that, like Him, we glorify You in all we do and say. This we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen Words of Assurance God makes all things new. (Rev 21:5) Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old has passed away; everything has become new! (2 Corinthians 5:17) Let us live with the good news that in Jesus Christ we are loved, we are blessed, we are forgiven. ALL: THANKS BE TO GOD! *Gloria Patri “Glory be to the Father, and the Son and the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, World without end. Amen. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, World without end. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Welcome Wave / Passing of The Peace Scripture Reading Revelation 21: 1-6 #244 New Testament Sermon “God of the Past, Present and Future” Rev. Mike Campbell WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD Hymn “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” #376 Blue Hymnal Versus 1 & 4 Love divine, all Loves excelling, Joy of heaven, to earth come down, Fix in us Thy humble dwelling, All Thy faithful mercies crown! Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure, unbounded love Thou art; Visit us with Thy salvation, Enter every trembling heart. 4
Finish, then, Thy new creation; Pure and spotless let us be; Let us see Thy great salvation Perfectly restored in Thee; Changed from glory into glory, Till in heaven we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before Thee, Lost in wonder, love and praise. Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, Who art in Heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Invitation to Serve God in the Church and the World Offering “My Tribute” Andrae Crouch Priscilla Hoskins, Soprano Nicole Pesce, Piano *Doxology Praise God from Whom all blessings flow, Praise God, all creatures here below, Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavn’ly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost, Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! 5
*Prayer of Dedication We bring these gifts as symbols of our love, our love for God, our love for Jesus and our love for one another. We pray God's blessing on these gifts, and pray that we may be blessed and strengthened by the Holy Spirit to be fruitful and loving witnesses of the gospel. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen SENDING FORTH TO WITNESS AND SERVE *Hymn “Let All Things Now Living” #554 Blue Hymnal Let all things now living A song of thanksgiving To God the Creator triumphantly raise; Who fashioned and made us, Protected and stayed us, By guiding us on to the end of our days. God's banners are o'er us, A pillar of fire shining forth in the night; Till shadows have vanished, All fearfulness banished, As forward we travel from light into light. By law God enforces. The stars in their courses, The sun in His orbit obediently shine; The hills and the mountains, The rivers and fountains, The depths of the ocean proclaim God divine. We, too, should be voicing Our love and rejoicing With glad adoration, a song let us raise; Till all things now living Unite in thanksgiving, To God in the highest, hosanna and praise. 6
Benediction As we go, may we be blessed with the glorious love of God, the limitless love of Jesus Christ, and the inspiring love of the Holy Spirit. *Postlude Nicole Pesce _______________________________________________________________ Event Invitation “We3”—Nicole Pesce, Suzanne Lansford and Renee Patrick invite anyone interested to either of two fundraiser concerts Friday, June 4.
