FairhaVEN SENIOR Lifestyles Dedicated to Serving Fairhaven’s Finest, Our Senior Citizens 229 Huttleston Avenue, Fairhaven, MA 02719 HOLIDAY CLOSING Phone: (508) 979-4029 ∙ Fax: (508) 979-4116 Monday, July 5th Email: asilvia@fairhaven-ma.gov - Website: www.fairhaven-ma.gov Independence Day JULY 2021 A FEW INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT OUR NATION’S BIRTHDAY In July 1776 the estimated number of people living in the newly independent nation was 2.5 million. Today the estimated population on July 4th, 2021 is 331 million. Census.gov. The 4th of July commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. It was adopted by Congress on July 2, 1776. It was revised and the final version was adopted two days later on July 4th. It was not until August 2nd that the Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 members of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. John Adams the second President of the United States and Thomas Jefferson the 3rd President, both signers of the Declaration of Independence, died on the same day, July 4th, 1826 about 5 hours apart. It took almost 100 years for the U.S. Congress to declare July 4th an official holiday. The oldest signer of the Declaration of Independ- ence was Benjamin Franklin at age 70. The young- est signer was Edward Rutledge who was 26. The first signation on the Declaration of Independ- ence was the President of the Continental Con- gress, John Hancock. Denmark celebrates our Fourth of July each year. Rebild National Park in Denmark is said to hold the largest July 4 celebrations outside of the United States. In 1998 Congress passed a bill declaring the 21 days between Flag Day, June 14th and Independ- ence Day, July 4th as Honor America Days.

TRANSPORTATION SERVICES OFFERED BY THE FAIRHAVEN SENIOR CENTER We all agree that transportation is a very important and much needed service provided by the COA. We are hap- py to be able to provide curbside transportation to Fairhaven seniors, 60 years old and older, via our COA vans or by medical transportation volunteers. IN-TOWN TRANSPORTATION The Fairhaven COA provides in-town transportation Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 12:00. There is a limited number of 10 people per day so we ask that you call the senior center as soon as you know when you will be needing a ride. We also ask that you limit your outing to one place per day. The van will provide transportation to and from medical appointments in Fairhaven (Southcoast on Mill Rd.), barber shops/hairdressers, pharmacies, banks, therapy, stores, etc. There is no charge for this transportation, however, a donation is gratefully ac- cepted. VOLUNTEER DRIVER FOR MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION Volunteers, who have had an appropriate CORI, a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle, may be available to provide local transportation to medical appointments in the Greater New Bedford/Dartmouth area. The driver uses his/her own vehicle for this service. To book a ride to a medical appointment, please call the Fairhaven COA as soon as you have your appointment. You will be asked your name, address, phone number, destination and time of your appointment. COA staff will reach out to the volunteer drivers. If a volunteer driver is available to provide the transportation, the senior will be notified and the driver will reach out to the senior to arrange a pick up time. The COA charges no fee for this service, however, there is a suggested donation of $10.00 for in-town and out-of-town trips given to the driver directly from the senior to assist with the cost of fuel. NOTE: Drivers will not be asked to provide transportation to those who are non-ambulatory, incontinent, violent or otherwise medically inappropriate. No transportation can be provided to anyone who is having a procedure requiring anesthesia. SPECIAL TRIPS Every Wednesday, the Fairhaven COA van provides a trip to a mall or casino. Fairhaven seniors are considered first for special trips, however, a list of out-of-town seniors is kept in the event there are seats available. Reserva- tions for the Wednesday mall trips must be phoned into the Fairhaven COA after the 15th of the current month for the following month trips. No food or beverage is allowed on the van. Please call the Fairhaven Senior Center at 508-979-4029 with any transportation requests or questions. Volunteer drivers are needed. If interested, call the Fairhaven Senior Center at 508-979-4029.

July 2021 Fairhaven COA Page 9 HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR BENEFICIARY FORMS LATELY? By: Brandon C. Walecka, Esq. Walecka Law, P.C., 774-203-9003, Brandon@WaleckaLaw.com Have you checked your beneficiary designations for your retirement accounts or life insurance policies recently? If not, you may find that your designated beneficiary is not who or what you think it should be, especially if you have had a major life event, such as a divorce, remarriage, or had children or grandchildren since your retirement plan account was established. Have you changed financial institutions? Rolled over a retirement plan? While many of us believe that updating and re- viewing our estate planning documents is important, others tend to neglect retirement account and life insurance beneficiary designations. Typically, your retirement accounts and life insurance, if a beneficiary(ies) is properly named, are not part of your probate estate and generally are not governed by the provisions of your will, so it is important to keep these assets up to date. This makes properly naming a beneficiary(ies) incredibly important. Outdated Beneficiary Designations I have met with several clients where there has been a divorce, remarriage, or death, but the client has neglected to update his or her beneficiary designation accordingly. This can result in frustration and shock of loved ones upon the client’s passing. What happens when a beneficiary predeceases the retirement plan owner or the insured? When a beneficiary predeceases the retirement plan owner or insured on a life insurance policy, it is important that the bene- ficiary designation form be updated. How should that deceased beneficiary’s portion be designated? Do you want it to pass to the beneficiary’s children or to the other named beneficiaries? If you do not update your beneficiary designation form, it is possible that the asset will need to pass through probate, causing delay and expense to your family. To avoid unintended outcomes, it is always best to ensure these forms are current. Should you designate a trust as a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy? I have many clients who have chosen to create on-going trusts for their children or grandchildren. Perhaps the child or grandchild has a disability, or they fear the child or grandchild could lose their inheritance to creditors, divorce, bankruptcy, lawsuits or a failed business. This can be a useful strategy, as designating the right type of trust as your beneficiary could allow you to provide financial support for your surviving spouse while ensuring that your children and grandchildren are provided for. Choosing the wrong type of trust or naming the trust incorrectly on your beneficiary designation form could result in disastrous tax consequences. Be sure to seek competent professional advice before you name your trust as a beneficiary. Are you unsure what your beneficiary designation forms say? Do not delay, reach out to each financial institution as soon as possible and ensure that your forms complement your estate plan. Page 10 Fairhaven COA July 2021 We face unique challenges when it comes to staying safe during the hot days of summer. These challenges range from health conditions that increase sun sensitivi- ty to more fragile skin. They can also put an older adult at higher risk for heat-related illnesses such as sun poisoning and heat stroke. It’s important that people to take steps to avoid dehydration, especially during the dog days of July and August. Here are a few preventive measures that promote healthier hydration. 6 Ways to Prevent Dehydration 1. Maximize fluid intake Drinking eight to ten glasses of water each day during the summer is important. It’s advice most people know they should follow, but don’t always do. If the taste of water isn’t appealing to you, foods with a high water con- tent can help you stay hydrated. Popsicles, melon, apples, pears, pineapple, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, and leafy greens are a few foods to include in your diet all year round. 2. Limit alcohol consumption Summer is a season for outdoor celebrations. Many of these parties include alcoholic beverages. Unfortunately, alcohol contributes to dehydration. When outdoors in the summer sun, you should limit alcoholic beverages or avoid them completely. 3. Avoid caffeinated beverages Caffeine is a diuretic. This means when you indulge in sodas, iced coffee drinks, and energy drinks, fluids pass through your system faster. That can contribute to dehydration. Stick to water with lemon or lime slices or other noncaffeinated beverages. 4. Monitor medication side effects Some people aren’t aware that medications may increase sun sensitivity. If a medication you or your loved one takes has that as a potential side effect, it means you are at higher risk for sunburn, hives, rashes, and dehydra- tion. Review any medications you may be taking to see if sun sensitivity is listed as a side effect and learn more if it is. 5. Schedule outdoor time wisely Try to limit the time you spend outdoors. Stick with the coolest times of day, which are generally before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. 6. Wear a hat While many might not consider themselves hat people, wearing a lightweight hat with a brim at least three inch- es wide is another hydration safety tip. It shades the face and neck, helping to keep you cooler. Recognizing the Symptoms of Dehydration Finally, we suggest familiarizing yourself with the symptoms of dehydration. From confusion to irritability, the signs aren’t always obvious. Some common signs are: extreme thirst, less frequent urination, dark-colored urine, fatigue, dizziness, and confusion. Recognizing when you or a loved one is in the early stages of dehydration can help you get treatment before a more serious health crisis occurs. ©LPi COA DISCLAIMER The Fairhaven COA offers legal, financial, medical, recreational and other services or activities by volunteers or nominal cost practitioners.
