We are also excited to announce that Rev. Sara Benedetti will officially be starting on Sunday, August 1, as our Associate Pastor of Children, Youth, and Families. Be sure to join us in celebrating the start of her ministry here. There is a lot to celebrate right here, right now at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield, but even more is on the way as the fall approaches and we welcome everyone home once more. Just remember, whether you are near or far from us this summer, you can stay connected to your church home. —Jeremy 1
PCW Staff Update We are happy to announce our new Associate Pastor for Children, Youth, and Families, Sara Benedetti. Rev. Sara Benedetti is a PC(USA) pastor who most recently served at Second Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Kentucky for over 6 years. Ordained in 2013, she has been serving the church since the age of 17 when she first heard God’s call to ministry. Originally from Northern California, Sara has lived all over the country, earning her B.A. in Youth Ministry and Psychology from Hope International University in 2005, and her M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 2011. Her biggest passions in ministry are working with youth, families and intergenerational opportunities, incorporating the arts into worship, and preaching in a way that gets people thinking. In her free time, she likes to crochet, paint, read, pet her adorable cats, and drink as much Diet Coke as she can get her hands on! Sara’s Letter to the congregation: Greetings to the congregation of The Presbyterian Church of Westfield! I am so thankful to be able to worship with you this Sunday, and I thank the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee, Jeremy, and the staff and congregation of the church for welcoming me so fully. I know that this has been a long road for you, and for myself as well, but I fully believe and trust that God has brought us together for good reasons and I am excited about the possibilities for the future. From the first time I learned about the position at Westfield, I felt a strong respect and connection to the church. Programs like Agape and others that have been in place for many years but have also adapted and continued during the pandemic are indicators of the health of the church and its place in the community. The congregation has an obvious care for and investment in children and youth, a strong volunteer base that has helped programs continue even during times without pastoral staff, and a commitment to reevaluate how the church leadership is structured. All of those things, and many more, were indicators of a healthy, vibrant congregation, and one that I am thrilled to help lead and walk alongside in the years to come. As a pastor, I’m passionate about educational and relational ministry, and I look forward to exploring intergenerational opportunities with all of you, getting to know you and your families, and to learning more about Westfield and the ministries of the church. Grace and Peace, Rev. Sara Benedetti 2
Clerk’s Corner Highlights of Special Session Meeting on June 3, 2021: A Special Session Meeting was held on June 3,2021 to hear a presentation on the recommended Church Management System by Laure Park and Liz Miller. There was a presentation by the vendor; a slide presentation; and time for questions and answers. • The recommended system is Church Community Builder (CCB) • It includes three integrated programs: a Giving Solution; a custom Church app that people load on their smart phones; and an Administrative Suite (chMS). • They looked at four different systems and CCB had the most functionality at the best cost. • A decision has not been made if the financials will stay on the current ACS platform or move to something different. • Someone in the office will enter the information on those people that “want nothing to do with technology”. Laure discussed Implementation and Process Impacts: • Dedicated resource or product owner- customize system, creating user interface forms, integration with other communication platforms, training users, addressing user queries. • PCW’s organizational readiness- Success will require church-wide participation, training staff, volunteers, and users. • Current staff/volunteer roles and processes- May change church processes and job responsibilities; may require different skills, could create more work initially. • Difficult to measure and track short-term success/benefits- Could track number of interactions by users and new member and participation numbers. Highlights of the June 8,2021 Regular Session Meeting Annual Report of TOPS and PNS&K Mary Danskin and Jenn Collum gave the annual report to Session on the TOPS program and the Nursery School (PNS&K). TOPS, which was founded in 1982, was not open this past year. One of the classrooms was used by the nursery school to create social distancing. Jenn Collum said this is PNS&K’s 73rd year. The nursery school was in pods with 10 children and 2 teachers this past year. They opened in September and never shut during the year. Jenn reported that the parents, teachers, and children all did an excellent job during the whole year. Mary Kay reported that starting in September TOPS will have 2 classes two days/week (Monday-Thursday). Jenn reported that they will be running a 4 th Kindergarten class due to demand. Moderator’s Report Jeremy said that we are starting to open. In-person services started, and we are expanding our technical capability. He asked Martha to talk about the Technology Transformation Projects. Martha thanked Lisa Black (Faith Formation), Nancy Smith (Worship), Courtney Nemec (Youth) and Carolyn Fleder (Outreach and Welcome) for completing the questionnaire. Martha compiled the responses and sent the report to Session. She stressed that there is still time for other people to provide input. Martha said the Technology Infrastructure Team had their “kick off” meeting. This team consists of Kevin Wilkin, Thomas Parkinson, Steven Mon, and Brad Schwartz. Each of these members has significant knowledge in various technology elements important to this effort. They will organize and run themselves. They are in the discovery process and will be reaching out to stakeholders. They will be in close contact with O&P. O&P will manage the project once the RFP is complete. Liz Miller said their project will dovetail with the Church Management System (CMS) Martha said the team has received all the available information about the CMS. Session Updates: 1. APNC Update- Courtney Nemec reported that the Children, Youth and Family APNC has found a candidate. The Presbytery Commission on Ministry examined and approved her, and she has accepted the terms of call. She has been working with youth and children for more than 20 years. Courtney made the motion: “To hold a Congregational Meeting on Sunday, June 27,2021 following the 10 worship services. The meeting will be held in the Sanctuary for the purpose of hearing and acting upon the report of the Associate Pastor for Children, Youth and Family Nominating Committee”. The motion was seconded. The motion passed unanimously. 3 - Continued on p. 4
Clerk’s Corner Jeremy explained the Pastor Nominating Process: • Pastors are members of the Presbytery (the Commission on Ministry has the relationship with the pastors), and the church pays and supports the pastors. • The congregation chooses the Nominating Committee. • The Pastor Nominating Committee discerns the call of God to the pastor candidate and to the church. • The Commission on Ministry examines and approves the pastor candidate. • Session calls the Congregational meeting. • The congregation votes on the pastor and the Terms of Call. 2. Jeremy thanked Ginny Leiz for all her work and change management effort over the past two years. Martha Kieczykowski made the motion “To elect Pam Shaw to be the Clerk of Session”. The motion was seconded. The motion passed unanimously. 3. Office & Property Update- Michael Quinlan reported that Chris Cerino created a spread sheet to track O&P projects. The Westminster Hall project is close to finishing. An engineer is looking at the front steps. They are hopeful that the driveway will be complete before the start of schools being back in person full time. They have hired someone to oversee the slate roof project. The contractor doing Westminster Hall has given a verbal quote to install a door on the coat room across from the Assembly Hall kitchen entrance to enable the closet to be used for storage of Agape supplies. A fence will be installed around the dumpsters. 4. Faith Formation Update- Bill Cook said that he is so happy to have Krista Aslanian, Interim Christian Education Coordinator, on board. She has lots of ideas. Vacation Bible Camp (VBC) will be 6/28-7/1/21 from 9-12:30 pm. Krista suggested that we hire teachers for VBC instead of just relying on volunteers. Volunteers will still be needed. The cost/child will be $50.00. Teacher in the PNS&K already have background checks. If other teachers are hired, they will need to have a background check done. Bill said they are working on Adult Ed for the Fall when we are fully back in person. 5. Liz Miller made the motion: “To approve the recommendation to purchase the Church Management System as presented and recommended by Laure Park and Liz Miller at the Special Meeting of Session on June 3, 2021.” The motion was seconded followed by discussion. Timeline- Liz said there would be a 4-week lead time up to the 8-week implementation and probably 4 weeks post implementation of working the kinks out. There will probably be a need to approve a new position to own, maintain, manage the CMS, and possibly take on some of Tina’s duties. The person will need strong analytical and interpersonal skills plus bookkeeping. This position might be full time for a while and then be part-time- possibly picking up some of what Tina’s duties are. The financial information will come over from the current ACS Finance system. One suggestion was to hire someone from CCB for 1 ½ years. Liz said she could check but did not think this is a model they use. There was a friendly amendment to the motion “The Session commits to pursing the church management system and accepts the recommendation by Laure Park and Liz Miller, presented at the Special Meeting of Session on June 3,2021. The motion was passed unanimously. Liz and Laure will now work with others to determine the impact on the other office workers and the duties and cost of the person working with the data base. Board of Trustees Meeting The Board of Trustees meeting was called to order by President, Howard Adams at 9:19pm. The purpose of the meeting was to elect a President and Vice President of the Corporation. Howard said he was willing to remain as President. As Konstanin Stanislavski once quipped, “There are no small parts, only small actors.” Join me on Tuesdays at 4pm through Zoom for this series on forgotten characters in the Bible. Summer Adult Education Invitation “It ain’t those parts of the Bible that I can’t understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand”. —Mark Twain Even when Jesus is being completely clear, it’s easy to be dismissive and to rationalize his teaching. Jesus’ core message as presented in the Sermon on the Mount presents a picture of God’s intention for us living in His creation. In clear and practical terms, Jesus helps us see what this looks like lived out in real life, in the middle of broken human conditions. But we inevitably and practically end up ignoring His teaching and this invitation. The challenge that this presents is the intention for our new summer series for your consideration and participation. Opening our hearts and mind to the essence of Living in the Kingdom is the goal. Sometimes getting started is the hardest part. To help get you started, we are presenting a flexible and accessible way to enter this challenge and to dwell on it. Through a series of various readings, lectures and interviews we invite you to explore Jesus’ message, to reflect on interpretations from different perspectives, and consider some of our limits, options, and next steps. The design of this offering is flexible and can be tackled in any order you like. It can entail some or all of the components to gain access or insights into your understanding and acceptance of Jesus’ invitation into the Kingdom. The core of the offering is to read Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman. This landmark book presenting a perspective on Jesus from what may be a very different point of view from where you have considered him before. This book was a foundational influence on Martin Luther King, Jr. as he formulated his mission and work. We will gather in September in small groups to discuss this book and to integrate some of the concepts developed in the following resources intended to support and expand the message Thurman presents in this book. You can purchase this book from: The Town Book Store - Westfield, NJ Barnes & Noble Amazon Please contact Alan Smith @ alandsmith518@gmail.com to learn more about this opportunity to delve deeper into the meaning of following Christ’s calling for us.
