1 Electronic Sports (eSports) are video game competitions, where players play against each other (individually or in teams). These competitions are usually staged in front of a live audience, streamed online or broadcast on TV. eSports is a growing industry and is expected to fully mature in five to ten years (Newzoo, 2018). In 2017 eSports had a global revenue of US$745 million and an audience of 385 million people (YouGov, 2017). It is estimated that eSports will generate more than US$1 billion in global revenue and nearly double its audience to 600 million by 2020 (YouGov, 2017). This report outlines eSport’s key audience and the organisations/ events the Australian eSport sector. KEY AUDIENCE eSports’ audience is young adults who are interested in gaming (YouGov, 2017). There is a large skew towards males, Nielsen found that 74% of Australian eSports fans are male. 66% of Australian eSports fans are 18-34 years old, with the median age being 26 (Nielsen, 2018). eSports fans have a passion for gaming and are motived to watch eSports as they want to see the best gamers play and learn from them (Nielsen, 2018). 2 ESPORTS ORIGINATIONS eSports industry is comprised of several large players which run on a national level, holding events all over Australia and smaller local originations which base events in certain cities or around a specific game or genre. The tables below outline national originations and local originations based in Brisbane/Queensland. Majority of the large originations are based in Sydney and Melbourne and run large scale events in those cities. There are gaps in Australia’s market; the west coast has little eSports activity and Brisbane does not see the large scale events that are held in Melbourne/Sydney NATIONAL ORIGINATION S Name Office Location Details ESL, originally Electronic Sports League, is an eSports company which organizes competitions worldwide. ESL is the world's largest eSports company, and the oldest professional sports organization that is still operational. Electronic Its parent company is Turtle Entertainment. Major Sports League Sydney Australia events ESL holds are: (ESL) • ESL AU & NZ Championship • Intel Extreme Masters Sydney • The Pokémon Oceania Championships • Components of PAX Australia Established in 2013; AEL is a provider of eSports competitions in Australia, attracting competitors from across the nation. AEL hosts many competitions across a broad range of titles such as DOTA 2, Counter-Strike: Australian Global Offensive (CS:GO), Rocket League, StarCraft 2, eSports league Sydney League of Legends and Overwatch. AESA is a non-for- eSports profit origination involved in the development of policy, Association planning, infrastructure and initiatives for eSports in Indeterminate (AESA) Australia. AESA’s vision is for eSports to be formally recognized by the Australian Sports Commission. CyberGamer is a website dedicated to competitive online gaming. Website is offers is free and supply users from PC and console (Xbox360 and PS3) with ladders, CyberGamer Adelaide leagues, forums, file libraries, galleries etc. These allows users to immerse themselves a community and compete against others with similar interests. eSports Founded in late 2017. The eSports Games Association Games (EGAA) is an incorporated entity dedicated to growing Association Sydney and legitimising eSports in Australia and New Zealand. Federation Brisbane/Queensland Organisations Name Location Details QUT eSports is Australia's first university endorsed eSports program. The origination runs a series of social events and amateur tournaments. The goal of the group is to provide a QUT eSports Brisbane pathway from amateur to professional participation in the CBD Australian eSports scene. 4 Name Location Details XP run many gaming events and tournaments in the XP eSports Brisbane Brisbane area. Their flagship event is the Brisbane Premier events CBD FIFA League. Brisbane Established in 2016. PvP run free to low entry tournaments PvP Gaming Gold Coast on a weekly basis. Founded in 1999 Lan Smash is an origination that hosts Greater large Lan parties in the Brisbane area. It holds four major LanSmash Brisbane Area events a year seasonally which are SummerSmash, AutumnSmash, WinterSmash, and SantaSmash. Checkpoint provides a central location in Surfers Paradise Checkpoint for people to meet, watch and play eSports. They have 16 Gold Coast eSports Tournament Spec PC's which can be hired. They hold regular open tournaments. QLD Smash is an ongoing project which aims to promote the Super Smash Bros. competitive gaming community QLD Smash Queensland within Australia. They run a website that provides smash data and events information. Downsmash Brisbane Holds weekly Super Smash Bros Melee events in QLD. Gold Coast They hold a series of 10 Smash events every year. The Fight for Brisbane purpose of these event is to raise money to send Flight CBD Queensland's players to BAM. ESPORTS EVENTS There are wide range of events held in the eSports industry these range from amateur tournaments, pro level competitions, community based events and industry events such as conferences. A selection of events held in Australia are outlined below. Most tournaments have an online streamed phase (usually qualifying rounds) and an offline stage tournament phase where the top teams compete for prizes and the title. The CS: GO tournament. involves 16 team competing online for 7 weeks. Top teams will then advance to the offline March/ playoffs.
