What our program offers The QUT Tigers Academy offers an Oceanic-leading support network to assist players on their journey towards becoming professional esports players. This includes: • access to QUT’s state-of-the-art esports facilities. • high performance coaching and training. • fitness, nutrition and sport psychology support. • academic support under QUT’s Elite Athlete Program. • access to scholarships for esports athletes. • opportunities for high school, community and industry esports engagement. • opportunities to compete at local, national and international levels.
QUT Esports Arena QUT is home to Australia’s first university The current PC specifications are: esports program and purpose-built esports arena. Specification QUT Esports Arena PC Operation The QUT Esports Arena is the principle Windows 10 (64 bit) system performance hub for Academy players for training, scrims and competitions. Processor i7-8700K Players also have priority access to utilise the facilities for training. Memory 16GB RAM The QUT Esports Arena is located at Graphics GTX 1080 Level 1, X Block on our Gardens Point campus and is fitted with 27 high-end Network 1 Gigabit Network Alienware gaming PCs that are upgraded regularly to ensure optimum performance Storage 500GB SSD + 1 TB HDD for our players.
High performance coaching and training More than casual gaming is required to improve performance. Players must also hone their craft across varying characters and skills. The QUT Esports coaching team includes leading analysts who record, assess and train Academy players to enable continued improvements in gaming and skill level. The coaching team conduct regular scrim sessions throughout the week to prepare the team for local, national and international esports League of Legends tournaments. Sport psychology A leading national high-performance sport psychologist and group of provisional psychologists conduct individual and team workshops for players regularly throughout the year. Sport psychology focuses on improving and maintaining team and individual performance, and maximising output as both esports players and students at QUT. Fitness and nutrition As a member of the Tigers Academy, you will be supported by a world-class network of health professionals, which includes staff and students from QUT’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Science. You will also have access to our fitness centers operated by the YMCA at our Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses. Academy players undergo regular physical training sessions and receive nutrition support to ensure that their physical health is in optimum condition to support gaming scrims and competitions. Players also work alongside QUT’s research team to complete physiological research projects.
Academic support QUT is proud to support aspiring esports players and provides academic support through our Elite Athlete Program. Benefits of QUT’s Elite Athlete Program include: • access to early class timetabling • exam and assessment support • access to workshops and support groups. We support our esports athletes just as we do our traditional sport athletes, and ensure that juggling academic and sporting endeavours is achievable for graduate success.
Women in esports QUT’s women’s Academy team contest a range of events, including the QUT ANZ Women’s League of Legends tournament. They are also leaders in the QUT Women in Gaming community.
Community and high school engagement Community and high school engagement are key components of the Academy program as we prepare our Tigers to become community leaders and support the next generation of aspiring esports athletes. Tigers regularly assist with the operation of the Queensland High Schools Esports League program, which fosters positive youth development and online safety. Our players also assist with intervarsity and community events, as well as peer coaching and developing esports players across a range of development teams.
Queensland High Schools Esports League QUT works in partnership with the Anglican Schools Commission to run the Queensland High Schools Esports League – an esports competition underpinned by STEM and esafety principles that provides high school students with esports competition experience and online safety skills. Our mission is to create the opportunity for high schools to be involved in a fun, non-traditional sporting team environment that: • inspires students to get involved • improves digital literacy skills • educates students on safe, life-long online behaviours and responsibilities • enhances connections across school communities • connects students with higher educational pathways, and • develops practical esports industry skills. Our program is committed to child protection and wellbeing, and adheres to the eSafety Commissioner’s Online Safety Education Framework to empower young people and schools with online safety tools to effect positive cultural change in their online environments. Matches are embedded with online safety and wellbeing projects created by and for students, with a focus on the eSafety Commissioner’s 4Rs of online safety: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Reasoning. The program runs over Terms 1 – 3 of the school year and caters to high school students aged 13 years and above who are interested in all areas of esports. Guided by QUT Esports professionals, students can participate as a player or take on production roles in casting, streaming and event coordinating. Games currently included in the tournament are Rocket League, Overwatch and League of Legends. For more information about how your school can get involved, please contact esports@qut.edu.au.
Industry opportunities Using strong ties to local and international industry, we connect students to industry opportunities and help them experience esports in the real world. Our program offers real experience across the multidisciplinary roles required in industry. Our students volunteer at events and undertake industry placements with some of Australia’s premier esports companies.
Competitions and tournaments Academy players compete for places on QUT’s official esports teams to contest events at local, national and international levels. This includes competing as part of our Oceanic Series Challenger (OCS) team, intervarsity league teams, and international representative teams. Our competitive teams are currently national and Oceanic leaders in the university competitive realm. In 2019, we represented the Oceanic region at the World University Cyber Games in Sanya, China. In 2020, our Oceanic University Championship team won the grand final against the University of Auckland. The QUT Tigers OCS team compete at the World University Cyber Games at the 2019 Sanya Esports Festival.
Esports scholarships In 2019, QUT became the first Australian university to offer scholarships to esports athletes. Esports scholarships are offered once per annum at the commencement of the calendar year to commencing and current QUT students. For 2021, 10 x $5,000 esports scholarships are available to aspiring League of Legends players. As part of the application process, applicants are required to contest an in-person trial across two days at the Gardens Point Esports Arena. Successful applicants will automatically receive a place in the Tigers Academy, where they can go on to represent the University in national and international events, including the Oceanic Challenger Series. Semester 1, 2021 scholarship applications Applications open: Thursday 6 August 2020 Applications close: Friday 20 November 2020 How to apply: Complete the online application and attend an in-person trial at the QUT Gardens Point Esports Arena. Trial dates and times: 9:45am-5:00pm Tuesday 12 January – Friday 15 January 2021 Note: By applying for a QUT Esport Scholarship, you will also be considered for membership to the QUT Tigers Academy on the same application.
Academy applications and selection process To become a member of the QUT Tigers Academy, you will need to go through a formal application and selection process. The selection process is competitive, but all interested applicants are encouraged to apply. Selection is based on performance results, personal motivations, and esports team ethos. A formal competitive trial process takes place at the Gardens Point Esports Arena for both semester intakes, and selections are made by the QUT Tigers Academy Selection Committee. Semester 1, 2021 Academy In-person trial selection applications process Applications open: Monday 18 January 2021 Each player will compete in League of Legends matches across the trialling period and receive Applications close: Tuesday 23 February scores for both qualitative and quantitative 2021 criteria. Statistical player data will be reviewed in conjunction with an evaluation of coaching How to apply: Complete the online application feedback and players’ “soft skills”. and attend an in-person trial at the QUT Gardens Point Esports Arena. Each criterion is not weighted equally, and the QUT Tigers Academy Selection Committee Trial dates and times: 9:45am-5:00pm Friday reserves the right to leverage outstanding 26 February – Sunday 28 February 2021 results in different criterion as reason for selection over a statistically higher performing player. Semester 2, 2021 Academy What happens if I cannot applications make the trial? Applications open: Monday 28 June 2021 If you are unable to make the trial, you may apply for special consideration by submitting Applications close: Tuesday 20 July 2021 evidence of inability to attend (e.g. medical Trial dates and times: 9:45am-5:00pm Friday certificate, inability to travel to arena, etc.). 23 July – Sunday 25 July 2021 Please email esports@qut.edu.au if you are unable to attend trials.
