Merrifield’s Very Own Newspaper www.merrifieldschool.co.za 7 September 2018 Happy birthday Merrifield! Celebrating 21 years of excellence and growth at this year's Founders' Day on Friday, 31 August. Special thank you to Matric Class of 2008 alumnus Viwe Nyamakazi for representing his class as guest speaker at assembly, and to Mrs Siphokazi Nyamakazi for her inspiring speech as well. From the Executive Head, Dr Guy Hartley Our 21st birthday celebrations have come and gone, and what a good time it was to reflect on our initial founding years and early heritage. From some humble beginnings, where we can really thank some far-sighted and visionary founders, Merrifield has now blossomed into a flourishing school. At 21, like a young adult, we are certainly “coming of age” and flexing our muscle in a number of ways, not least of which is the significant opening of our new sports precinct just around the corner in early 2019 – a major development in our history. I certainly believe that we are well on a path from becoming not just a good school, but a really great school rooted in the Eastern Cape. Thank you to our families, staff and alumni who have embraced the initiative of “a gift of a tree” to the school on its 21st birthday, which overlapped suitably with Spring Day and National Arbour Week. Over R16000 has already been raised towards enhancing the landscape of the new sports development and adjoining roads – a remarkable achievement in the space of one week. The tree donations are a wonderful gift to the school and received appreciatively as your landmark contribution to watch as they grow in tandem with the unrelenting progress of the school in the next 21 years ahead. 1

Merrifield Tennis Triumph at Sun City Private Schools Tournament The Merrifield College Boys A tennis team have again proved triumphant at the national Sun City Private Schools Tennis tournament, winning top honours in the A section of the tournament against schools such as Michaelhouse and St John’s. This is not the first time Merrifield College has punched above its weight; the overall tournament title has been won by Merrifield boys tennis teams twice previously. The 2018 tournament took place at Sun City from 27 to 31 August. This year Merrifield took three College teams up: the boys A team, boys B team and a girls team. The boys A team – made up of Joseph Townes, Dylan Smith, Peter Townes, Keelan Hartley and Alex Murray – beat St John’s 6-1; beat King Edward School 4-3; beat St David’s 5-2 and beat Michaelhouse 6-1 to win the tournament on points by Thursday afternoon. Special mention must be made of Grade 8 student Joseph Townes who was ranked 2nd in the tournament in his section. “The A team boys had a great tournament and got the job done by winning the tournament on the Thursday with the final matches taking place on Friday being irrelevant due to the points lead we had,” Merrifield College sports co-ordinator Andre Du Toit said. “The B team boys finished 5th out of 8 teams and it was a great learning experience for them. For all the B team boys it was the first time at the tournament and a first time playing tournament tennis.” Merrifield College teacher Gardie Newman, who managed and supported the girls team in their debut at the tournament, said the experience had been wonderful for the athletes. “The spirit has been great and we have seen growth in team building, play and in all aspects,” Newman said. The Merrifield girls team played against A sides, and lost 1-6 vs Helenic, lost 2-5 vs Uplands, lost 3-4 vs St Tere- sa, won 4-3 vs Kingsmead and won 7-0 vs Redhill. “This year having three teams representing the school was a good change for us,” du Toit said. “Usually during our matches it's ‘us vs our opponents and their supporters’. This year we also had our other teams supporting us during our matches which brought about a feeling of why we were there, and it was with only one thing on our minds and that was to put Merrifield’s name back on the trophy this year.” 5
