THE 3 BUCKETS OF SCHOLARSHIPS • INSTITUTIONAL • STATE • PRIVATE
THE BIGGEST BUCKET…WE’LL GO WITH RED • Institutional SCHOLARSHIPS ARE ALMOST ALWAYS THE BIGGEST, MOST GENEROUS • Qualify early by testing early and applying early • Make sure test scores make it to the colleges ON TIME. • Meeting the institution’s requirements for their merit-based scholarships. • MOST CASES - institutional scholarship offers are an automatic part of the application process…there are exceptions & requirements (i.e... deadlines, supplemental info, etc…)
LASTLY…FOR INSTITUTIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS…RAISE.ME! • Stay aware of your GPA • You will work harder & encourage one another…always a win-win! • You may discover schools you’ve never considered before, especially small to medium sized schools • May result in more college research and visiting more schools • You MUST Proactively build your Raise profile at the end of each grading period…AND BE COMPLETE BY YOUR INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL’S DEADLINES TO QUALIFY!!
THE NEXT…VERY GOOD BUCKET…IS THE STATE OF FLORIDA – BRIGHT FUTURES! • Bright Futures is a guaranteed scholarship – if the student meets all 3 requirements by graduation the student will get the scholarship • Must apply senior year prior to graduation, application opens October 1st – IT IS NOT AUTOMATIC, EVERYONE MUST APPLY!!! • Apply as soon as you can after the application opens, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT TO HAVE THE GPA, TEST SCORES &/OR HOURS POSTED – GET THE APPLICATION IN SO WE CAN START CHEKING/TROUBLESHOOTING • Can access the monies up to 5 years after graduation

THE LAST BUCKET THAT CAN BE THE MOST WORK… • Private scholarships take a lot of work – but are often are the deciding factor against student loans or can fill the financial need gap left over after all federal, state & institutional aid is awarded! • Can garner/be awarded as many as possible • Some do take financial need into consideration, some do not • Look @ it like a job – 45 minutes to an hour every few days
WEBSITES THAT CAN HELP • https://www.scholarsnapp.org/- finding scholarships • https://www.studentscholarships.org/ - finding scholarships • http://www.wiredscholar.com/ - SallieMae site for financial aid • http://www.collegepayway.com/ - tools for planning to pay for college • https://www.goingmerry.com/ - the “Common App” for scholarships • AND CommonApp has a scholarship search engine too – Scholar SnApp!!
WHERE ELSE TO LOOK? • Local organizations such as Rotary & Kiwanis clubs often offer service-based scholarships to students in the communities they serve • Houses of Worship will often help/sponsor and in some cases even create a scholarship to assist students in their congregation – why not spearhead the program if it doesn’t already exist? • Places of employment & patronage: UPS, Church’s Chicken, Target, Walmart, Burger King, Tylenol, Coca-Cola and many other corporations offer generous scholarships • Financial institutions – the South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union offers 15 Florida pre-paid scholarships every year, Tropical Financial offers 5 $1,000 scholarships to their members, Wells Fargo has great programs to assist high school seniors – ask your financial institution or bank!
AND DON’T FORGET ABOUT COLLEGE BOARD’S OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS TOO… • $500 for every step towards college that you MUST complete anyway… • make a list, practice for the SAT, research scholarships, apply for both college and financial aid!!! • Why not try to get a little more $$ for doing all that you have to do anyway??? • Apply here: https://opportunity.collegeboard.org/
FAFSA WEBSITE… • http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
