Recycling at Curbside
                     Paper and Cardboard Boxes
   RECYCLING IS COLLECTED EVERY WEEK at
    *CURBSIDE
   PAPER PRODUCTS: Newspaper, junk mail, office
    paper, magazines, school papers, notebooks,
    cereal boxes, pasta boxes, shoe boxes, soft cover
    books, and any other paper MUST be in BROWN
    PAPER BAGS, BUNDLED and/or TIED.
    CORRUGATED CARDBOARD
   Packing boxes, appliance boxes and the like MUST
    BE FLATTENED/ TIED or FLATTENED & PLACED
    INSIDE ANOTHER CARDBOARD BOX.
        Cardboard must be CLEAN.
        PAPER & CARDBOARDS SHOULD BE KEPT DRY.
        Place in a Covered Recycling Bin especially if it’s
         supposed to rain the night before.
        Wet Paper/ Cardboard becomes Garbage and is
         no longer recyclable.

Recycling at Curbside
                 Bottles, Cans & Plastics
   ALL Recyclable items MUST BE CLEAN & TOTALLY EMPTY

   Tins, Glass, Aluminum & Plastic (#’s 1, 2 & 5) are collected at the curb in a
    barrel or other hard container

   Plastic shopping bags CANNOT be used for any recyclable material.

   ALL PLASTIC CAPS from BOTTLES & CONTAINERS are thrown in the Garbage

Recycling Center Hours of Operation
• 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.   Monday – Saturday

• Construction & Debris 2nd & 4th Saturday of each month
   • 9 a.m. -12 noon

• There are cameras that take nice pictures and you will be
   fined if you drop off after hours.
Items Accepted at the
                         Recycling Center
   APPLIANCES & ELECTRONICS - ACCEPTED
        Stoves, refrigerators (must remove doors), dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, freezers,
         microwaves, toaster ovens, dehumidifiers, lamps, leaf blowers (any large or small appliance or
         electronic item).

   METAL, MISCELLANEOUS SCRAP - ACCEPTED
        Metal lawn furniture, metal cabinets, grills, metal swing sets, sheds, basketball poles, lawn
         mowers, bicycles, tools, pots & pans, metal garbage cans, copper or metal pipes to Recycling
         Center

   CARPET, AREA RUGS & PADDING - ACCEPTED
        All Rugs must be brought to the Recycling Center.
          No wet carpet will be Accepted at the Center. Fee $5—$20 depending on the size of carpet.

   LATEX PAINT CANS
        If there is still paint in the can, mix kitty litter into the paint to the consistency of oatmeal.
         Dump that mixture into a double plastic bag and put it in your regular garbage. Bring the
         empty paint can down to Recycling Center

   FLUORESCENT TUBES (LIGHTS - LONG TUBE)
Compact fluorescent bulbs are NOT accepted at the Recycling Center - check your home
improvement store for disposal.

CONSTRUCTION & DEBRIS DUMPSTER (“C&D”)
   2nd and 4th Saturday of the month, from 9 am until 12 noon

   C & D Location: at the RECYCLING CENTER on Ryerson Way

   Permit Forms are available at the Recycling Center, Borough Website, and at Borough Hall. Please
    fill out before hand.

   (Fee = $35 (up to 2 car loads) and/or $50 if more)
        Checks Only payable to the "Borough of Hawthorne"
              NO Cash - Pay at the dumpster site.

   You may dispose of any of the following at the dumpster:
        CONSTRUCTION WOOD, SCRAP WOOD, WOOD PLAY GYMS, WOOD FENCING
        Bathroom / Ceiling Tiles / Wood Flooring
        No Recycling or hazardous Waste
        NO - ASPHALT    / NO - BRICKS

CONCRETE ONLY - $20 Fee (limit 2,000 lb.) can be brought to the Recycling Center during the week as
well as on Saturdays.
Yard Waste, Leaves and Branches can be
           brought to the Recycling Center

Recycling Tonnage Reported
   Each year a letter is mailed out to all businesses to have them provide us with how much
    they recycled. Along with the haulers you see picking up throughout the town.

   The Data and Numbers (tons) are collected in a report form and submitted to the DEP at
    the state level.

   Each year we are awarded a certain amount of state grant money which is to be used within the
    town, specifically for the Recycling Program.

        Some things we have bought in the past few years: Equipment, repaired - existing equipment.

             This year we will be getting a gate for around the Recycling Center
             Lids for a few of our recycling containers (for cardboard especially)
             Additional blue recycling barrels
Unused Prescription Drugs & Medicines
                            “Project Drop Box”
   The Hawthorne Police Department has a Safe & Secured Drop Box for any
    unused & expired medications.
   The drop box is located in the Municipal Building by the Police Dept. Dispatch
    Center.
   Accepted in the drop box are the following:
        solid pharmaceuticals, such as pills, capsules, patches, inhalers & pet
         medication. No syringes or liquids.
Residents can drop off these kinds of items anytime: 7 days a week/ 24
hours a day
Garbage rules, regulations and hints
   GARBAGE IS COLLECTED ONCE A WEEK
   Find your Zone on the first 2 pages of the 2021 calendar to know which day your
    Garbage is collected.
   All garbage must be in garbage cans at the curb.
   Up to six (6) cans of garbage per household unit at the curb
   Garbage must be at curb before 7 a.m. or the night before after 5 p.m.
   Do not place recyclables in garbage.
   Garbage can must have handles.
   Garbage barrel can't weigh more than 50 pounds/50 gallons.
   Please put your house # on your can.
   Drill holes in the bottom of your plastic barrels for any rain water to escape

   Register to receive important updates on emergencies and local events via text message
    and/or email by registering for one or more Hawthorne Nixle groups.

    Registration for both email and text messages for all Hawthorne groups can be accomplished
    either at the Borough’s website, www.hawthornenj.org, or the nixle website,
    www.nixle.com, also Borough’s FaceBook group.

   At the Nixle website you may also sign up to receive messages from other agencies in the
    area, and elect how you receive different types of messages according to their level of
    urgency.

   Registration to receive text messages only can be accomplished by texting the appropriate
