SCHOOL NEWS ST NICHOLAS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL 12TH OCTOBER 2018 ISSUE 5—2018/19 YEAR 7 WELCOME MASS Ever since our retreat at St Wilfrid’s Church last week, we have been preparing for our Welcome Mass. Everyone has worked so hard and so creatively to celebrate the start of a new community and family here at St Nicholas’. Thank you to everyone who supported the students and to all the families who came along to share in our celebration. We have great hopes for all the little seeds that will be sown, and birds of the air that will take flight, in the year to come. FOODBANK ‘FLASH’ More thanks to everyone who support our senior prefect project to bring together donations for the Foodbank. As you can see, the chapel was filled with bags and boxes of food and toiletries which will support many people in this area. We have a permanent collection point for the Foodbank by my office so if you ever want to donate any items please send them in at any Mairie Gelling, time. School Chaplain MEET THE HEADTEACHER EVENING Many thanks to all the parents, carers and students who attended the ‘Meet the Headteacher’ event last Thursday. There were some excellent discussions and questions on a whole range of topics including our 'Frog' VLE, homework, staffing, student lockers and the curriculum. All the suggestions have been compiled to feedback to the Senior Leadership Team and Subject Leaders in the coming weeks. Our next Parent Focus Group is planned for Wednesday 24th November and will focus on the topic of Student Reports - all are welcome!
STUDENT COUNCIL TRAINING DAY th On Thursday 4 October, the 2018-2019 Student Council Reps attended a day’s training. Since the introduction of the Student Council in 2016 we now have 55 Student Council members which is excellent. During the day the members took part in a number of activities, beginning with teambuilding activities. They were given sellotape and newspapers and had to build a shelter for their team to survive in. They then reflected on the skills they needed to work well as a team. The members then looked at a number of leadership skills needed to be an effective Student Council member, such as organisation, building a positive self-esteem and goal setting. The Student Council is chaired by our Senior Prefects and they also delivered sessions during the day on the UK Youth Parliament, UN Global Goals and Representing others. To end the day, the members reflected on last year’s action plan and set their agenda and goals for the upcoming year. The Student Council represent all students in school and they have achieved a number of things such as: •Working closely with the School Chaplain to promote the Catholic Ethos of the School and attending Mini-Dash •Working with the UK Youth Parliament •Visiting Westminster •Taking part in the Make Your Mark vote •Reviewing School Behaviour Policy •Working with the PTFA •Raising money and awareness for Fair-Trade •Securing outdoor seating •Recycling machines in the canteen which give prizes! •Working with Young People all over the North West on the Northern Powerhouse. •Meeting the local MP •Delivering Assemblies •SNAG Group- School Nutrition Group •Delivering a presentation at a yearly Safeguarding Conference. •Designing posters about Mental Health to go up in doctor’s waiting rooms For more information about out Student Council please visit our School Website. NEWS Sadly we have not heard from any parents who might be interested in taking on the position of Chair. For this reason, our next meeting taking place on Tuesday 6th November will be a standard PTFA meeting and our January meeting will become the AGM. It is imperative that we find a dedicated individual prepared to take on this role as a matter of urgency. Full details of the role are on the PTFA section of the website. Please contact our current Chair, Kim Griffiths kim@copley.co.uk if you have any queries. Meetings take place in school from 6.15 pm and last around an hour. We would be delighted to welcome you! Without a Chair the PTFA will be unable to continue to carry out its valuable role for school. The Chair is also a Trustee of the registered charity. We are excited to bring you the news that ALL STALLS for our fantastic Christmas Market are now SOLD OUT! Save the date: Thursday 22nd November from 5.30 pm until 8.00 pm. We will be showcasing an eclectic mix of stalls that are sure to interest everyone attending, irrespective of age. Add to that our fabulous food stalls – Chime with their delicious made-to-order wood fired pizzas and Haloumi Fries adding a twist and some spice to food for our vegetarian and vegan guests (although you can also try them out if you are not!). PTFA will be offering Tracey’s stunning, still warm, home-baked mince pies (I can smell them already) and our famous mulled wine by the glass. Put the date in your diary and plan to come along and enjoy this shopping – and eating – extravaganza. There will be a nominal entrance charge of £1 per adult (no charge for children/students). It’s a great fun evening for all the family. We are counting down to the launch of our popular Christmas Raffle. For the second year running we have been extremely fortunate to secure a Eurocamp family holiday as our first prize. Our second prize will be a beautiful Christmas Hamper (complete with wicker basket) and a magnum of Prosecco. Third prize is £50 cash. Tickets will be £1 each and will be available to buy via Parentpay following the half term holiday. We are loving our Year 7 parents! Thank you so much to another kind parent who emailed this week in response to our request for Matched Funding. Fantastic timing with our Christmas Market and Christmas Raffle coming up! We are so very appreciative of you, offers of help and, as you know, Matched Funding can make such an enormous difference to our fundraising and therefore to how much we can add to our childrens’ learning experience and environment. If YOU work for a company that has a matched funding scheme and you can spare some time to get involved in a PTFA event, please contact us. We will work with you to make the most of your generosity for whatever time you can spare. Please contact kim@copley.co.uk if you can help.
