Degree: First Year [60 Credits/ECTS] Students are required to take six modules per semester Compulsory Modules (50 ECTS) Semester One (Sept - Dec) Semester Two (Feb – May) Intro to Financial Accounting – 5ECTS Intro to Management Accounting – 5 ECTS Principles of Microeconomics – 5 ECTS Principles of Macroeconomics - 5 ECTS Business Information Systems – 5 ECTS Information Management for Business- 5 ECTS Mathematics for Business – 5 ECTS Introductory Statistics for Business - 5 ECTS Management and Enterprise – 5 ECTS Foundations of Marketing Thought - 5 ECTS J.E. Elective Modules (10 ECTS) Skills for Success – a module focusing on university skills such as writing and presenting, planning, research skills, etc. 100% continuous assessment Semester 1 and Business Law I - important for Accounting Exemptions at the end of your degree Semester 2 OR Spanish or German or Gaeilge or Chinese Semester 1 & Semester 2 • Beginners Level Available for Chinese. Beginners or Intermediate Level available in both Spanish and German. No previous knowledge of these languages is necessary for the Beginners module. Intermediate Level available in Gaeilge. (L.C. H4 min for admission to Advanced language options) • End of Year: you may be eligible for transfer to 2nd yr. of B. Comm. International or B. Comm le Gaeilge (places are limited) J.E. Tribes & Learning Communities You will be assigned to a specific Galway Tribe (up to 50 students), and sub-divided into Learning Communities (up to 25 students) Online Lectures – may have 250+ students in attendance. Held and posted on Blackboard. Tutorials / Workshops – small classes, fewer than 50 in number Tribes and Learning Communities – tutorials / workshops with the same group of students for each module, where students come together, engage and learn together Online lectures (begin in Week 1) and on-campus tutorials / workshops (begin in Weeks 2-3; further information from module lecturer). Timetables and blended delivery (semester 1) • The existing published timetable with timeslots indicates when online lectures take place. • These timeslots will also cater for tribes and learning communities, which will be delivered on-campus on a rotational basis. • Students will receive specific guidelines from the School Office and individual lecturers regarding when you will be scheduled for on- campus module delivery • It is extremely important that you regularly check email for updates. 25/09/2020

Progression to Second Year • Must pass ALL modules in First Year to progress to second year • Pass = 40% in all modules • No capping (where max mark is 40%) of repeat sittings, in first year. • There is a compensation provision J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics
Progression: Compensation provision The Pass standard is 40% in each module. However, a student with marks less than 40% in one or more modules may “compensate” and will be deemed to have passed provided: - The aggregate mark for all modules of the year is at least 40% - No mark is below 35% - Not more than 15 ECTS have marks in range 35 – 39% Note: Where one or more of these conditions have not been met, each module with a mark below 40% must be repeated. Marks of 40% and above are carried forward to the next session and are not repeatable. J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics
Examinations and Honours • H1 70% on the aggregate • H2.1 60% on the aggregate • H2.2 50% on the aggregate • Pass 40% on the aggregate First Year Examinations: There are no end-of-semester exams in first semester; but there will be 100% continuous assessment for semester 1. There are exams (and continuous assessment) in Semester II. To defer for serious personal/medical reasons, you must seek permission from the School Office. Supporting documentation required. All medical certs should be submitted to the School Office, AND at the time of the student’s illness. J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics
Autumn (Repeat Examinations) • Fail in Sem I or Sem II: repeat failed modules in August • Fail in autumn: get exemptions in all modules passed; repeat any failed modules at Sem I, Sem II or autumn sessions of next academic year • Two year rule: First BComm must be passed within two academic years from the date of entering the BComm programme. • You must pass First Year to progress to second year J.E.
