OUR PLACE We are very proud of our unique place. Located in an attractive, rural setting close to the township of Te Aroha, Elstow-Waihou as the name suggests is a combination of two schools, which is sited on the Elstow School site. The historical arched cast iron entrance and pillars complete with the names of local soldiers who had died in WW1 and WW2 open way to attractively appointed school buildings and grounds. The administration block welcomes visitors to the school, adjacent to the administration block is the Endeavour - multi-purpose hall and our Community Hub. We currently run six fulltime classrooms along with our STEAM HQ and junior and senior libraries. Outside facilities include well-appointed gardens including vegetable gardens and chicken housing area (as part of the school’s involvement of Enviro-School silver award endorsement). The grounds are complete with a multi-sport astro-turf facility, large swimming pool, extensive playground, sandpit area, shaded lunch areas, storage and sports sheds, and extensive field with a native grove. In all, the school is attractively positioned around a central assembly area with generous seating and space.

ELSTOW-WAIHOU SCHOOL ANNUAL PLAN 2020 OUR CULTURAL IDENTITY Encouraging students to develop a sense of belonging within our unique New Zealand bi-cultural society and each other’s cultural heritage We believe that encouraging all our students to develop a sense of belonging within our unique New Zealand society has a monumental impact on enhancing all aspects of our children’s wellbeing. As our tamariki undertake their learning journey they gain a greater understanding and appreciation of their pepeha and importance of sharing the stories within them. And when our oldest tamariki leave, their final task at our school is to create their pou whenua so they can acknowledge and symbolise their contributions and continued connectedness to their turangawaewae – our school. Consultation with our Maori community is critical to raising targets for the achievement level of our Maori students. Our Community Hub has been established to gain our communities opinions, discuss progress made, and make future plans in a partnership. At our school, kapa haka te reo me ona tikanga Māori is embodied and practiced. Through kapa haka we see our tamariki gain a sense of self and a connectedness both spiritually and emotionally with themselves and others encapsulating the true essence of whanaungatanga. Robust programmes are set in place with tracking and targeting of Maori and Pasifika students. The presentation of Maori and Pasifika achievement is shared with parents at interview and reporting times, and at informal korero. Maori and Pasifika cohort information is presented to the Board of Trustees in the Principal’s Report. ELSTOW-WAIHOU SCHOOL ANNUAL PLAN | 2020
ELSTOW-WAIHOU SCHOOL ANNUAL PLAN 2020 OVERVIEW OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT The Board of Trustees recognise the National Priorities as shown by NAG 1 with the focus on Literacy and Numeracy. The school uses a range of assessment tools for school wide information gathering, these include: • Progressive Achievement Tests (PATs) in Reading Comprehension, Reading Vocabulary, Listening Comprehension • Supplementary Tests of Achievement in Reading (STAR), Prose Inventory Reading Assessment, asTTle (Writing), New Zealand Curriculum Exemplars in Written Language, Spelling tests, GLOSS and/or Pearsons Mathematics test, and PAT Mathematics. A range of school wide data in Literacy and Numeracy is reported on and presented to the Board. Data is analysed within cohorts. Reliable and valid comparative data is presented to the Board. Teachers use the data to identify students who are not yet at the required curriculum level and tamariki who are at risk of not achieving. Students who are achieving at the required curriculum level and those who are achieving superior levels of achievement are identified so that programmes can be provided to support students in a range of learning areas. The Board of Trustees are informed at all board meetings as to how all our children are performing against annual targets and objectives. Thorough evaluation is undertaken throughout the year so as to inform strategic next steps. Reporting to parents through the year include two written reports and two parent teacher conferences.
