Dear Members, We wish all of our members, staff and all of your families a healthy and happy New Year. 2022 is indeed a year to look forward to and celebrate with our families and friends. We anticipate record attendance at our events this season and hope that each of you will take an opportunity to welcome our new members and their families. What makes Gleneagles special is the warm, welcoming culture created by our members over the years. Deborah Benson club president The Board of Governors election is scheduled for February 22, 2022. Meet the Candidates Night will be held on January 24, 2022 at 7:30 pm in the Legends Dining Room. We are excited to report that for the first time, our members will have the option of voting online as a result of a resolution passed by our Board of Governors in January 2021. Voting online provides an easy way to participate in important club elections without having to rely upon a paper ballot sent and returned via US Mail. This is the perfect solution for seasonal residents who may be in another residence when election material is sent. In addition, online voting saves paper as well as provides the peace of mind and reassurance that your ballot was received and counted. The deadline to enroll in online voting for the 2022 election has passed, but you can always enroll in online voting for future elections by completing a form at the Concierge Desk or on the Members Only website. All members will receive election material in January 2022. Kraig Spina general We would like to thank Mrs. Deborah Benson, Mrs. Barbara Berkowitz, Mrs. Judy manager Hotz and Mr. Steve Wolk for their service on the Board for the past six years. These individuals have completed three concurrent two-year terms on the Board of Governors. Deborah, Barbara, Judy, and Steve, as well as the entire 2021 board were instrumental in helping Gleneagles navigate through the pandemic successfully within our Gleneagles Community. The members of the Gleneagles board attended more than 60 meetings during 2021 giving selflessly to the club. We hope you will consider being part of our Gleneagles Governance in the future whether you serve on a committee or the Board of Governors. We are excited for the opening of our new dining venue, The V. We hope that you will soon have the opportunity to experience this new venue, and we look forward to offering exciting new culinary experiences and events in The V in the year ahead. Gleneagles continues to be the best place to live and play, and it is a testament to our lifestyle that real estate inventory is still at near record-low levels with just a handful of units available for sale. The January 2022 issue of The Eagle is a special issue, as we have incorporated our Healthy Life Newsletter on pages 9-12. The Healthy Life Newsletter is produced four times each year. New for 2022, we will be incorporating The Healthy Life into the January and April Eagle newsletters to ensure everyone has a chance to see this wonderful publication created by our Healthy Lifestyle Center team. The August and November 2022 issues will be distributed online with hard copies available in the Healthy Lifestyle Center. We look forward to a very happy, healthy, and successful 2022. Happy New Year! Respectfully yours, photo by Deborah Benson, Club President FRED SINGER Kraig Spina, General Manager 2 the Eagle JANUARY 2022

Z exercise Do Sweat It There’s a reason why, for centuries, exercise has been the go- to prescription for vitality – but that reason is not what most people think. Yes, exercise improves blood flow. Yes, it improves lung and heart health. But more than any of that is a simple thing that happens at a much smaller scale: the cellular scale. When researchers studied the telomeres (the end of a chromosome) in the blood cells of thousands of adults with all sorts of exercise habits, they saw a striking correlation: those who exercised more had longer telomeres (an indicator of longevity). And according to one study funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and published in 2017, individuals who exercise more – the equivalent of at least a half hour of jogging/ fast walking five days a week – have telomeres that appear to be nearly a decade younger than those who a live a more sedentary life. But, why would exercising delay the erosion of telomeres? Exercise, by definition, is the application of stress to our bodies. It raises NAD (coenzyme central to metabolism) levels, which turns up energy production and forces muscles to grow extra oxygen-carrying capillaries. The longevity regulators AMPK (coordinates metabolic pathways by balancing nutrient supply with energy demand), mTor and sirtuins (both regulate cellular processes) are all modulated in the right direction by exercise: building new blood vessels, improving heart and lung health, making people stronger and extending telomeres. There’s really no way around this. We all need to be pushing ourselves, especially as we get older, yet only 10 percent of people over 65 do. The good news is we don’t have to exercise for hours on end. One recent study found that those who ran/fast walked four to five miles a week – for most people, that’s an amount of exercise that can be done in less than 15 minutes per day – reduce their chance of death from a heart attack by 45 percent and all-cause mortality by 30 percent. That’s a massive effect. A simple 10-minute walk with a friend can be so powerful. Here’s why: • The physical exercise will boost your brain health • The conversation will tweak brain neuro circuits • If you talk about what’s on your mind, it will help relieve stress 10 the Eagle JANUARY 2022

FINE DINING JULIEN SARAZEN / UNSPLASH REGAN SAMANIEGO DIRECTOR OF FOOD & BEVERAGE Fresh Perspectives January first has arrived, and suddenly it is time to start something new and embrace the excitement of beginnings. It’s the first blank page of a 365 page book that your Food & Beverage team is excited to write. This past year may have thrown more at us than we planned, but we still made it and we kick off this new year with our New Year’s Day Champagne Brunch. It will be a lavish, all you can eat brunch experience featuring a bottomless bloody Mary and mimosa bar. While we look forward to new beginnings, we won’t forget the things that make us great, including our Lobster Nights which will be featured on January 15 and 22. There will be two opportunities to attend this evening as we want to be able to accommodate all. The V (formerly The Veranda) is a popular topic when I speak with members. The V will be utilized by Food & Beverage in January. As the restaurant supplies are due to arrive soon, we are excited to be able to have you experience our new venue. As there are many challenges and unknowns, we have decided not to add specific dates to the calendar in the Newsletter. Our schedule has been fluid thus far and we thank you for all the support and understanding as we face these challenges head on. The Weekly Dining Specials email is a great resource to see what is going on in Food & Beverage in regard to schedules and offerings. Our Wednesday and Friday evenings in Legends and around the pool have been highly successful and very well attended, but did you know we offer in-club dining on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights? This brings us up to six nights a week for in-club dining with menus varying based on venue and theme. We will continue to work hard while we navigate these unprecedented times and I assure you that bringing fun and a great dining experience is paramount to our team. Thank you for all the support and we look forward to making 2022 a great year. 14 the Eagle JANUARY 2022

ON OUR GREENS JOE DeMINO, pga director of golf Starting Fresh! 2021 Ladies’ 18 Opening Day Happy New Year! We closed out 2021 with some excellent weather, great November 16, 2021 golf, and lots of new friends and new golf games formed. The December Mixed Couples tournament had 240 players, which is the largest field in over two years. It is now 2022, and as the old phrase goes, the best is yet to come! We are deep into the majors and as always, they have a full field of players just like our league days. Our Demo Days continue to be very successful. Yes, there are still some challenges in getting certain retail product due to global supply chain issues, but our team and our vendors are committed to doing everything possible to get our members their products as quickly as possible. The practice facility has been very popular, especially the driving range, which has 20 spots. Did you know that our members hit approximately 30,000 golf balls on the driving range each day? Our members have been doing a great job sharing the space with each other during busy times, such as warm up before league days, and we are very grateful for your consideration for fellow members. Thank you to all of the members for their efforts in continuing to be safe. Golf has reached new heights during the past twenty-one months as outdoor activities provide a safe way to socialize and exercise, and it is so nice to see the golf courses at full capacity. We wish everyone a great season, especially our new members who are spending their first winter in our special paradise at Gleneagles. As always, our doors are open, and we always look forward to conversations with our members about golf and life in general. We are a family – and we look forward to a wonderful 2022! PRO TIP: SMALL CHANGES, BIG IMPACT! 1. Balance is very important in anything we do in life, but especially in golf. If we want to create power in a golf swing, balance is key. Any exercise or activity that you can do to improve your balance in general will also pay dividends to your golf game. 2. Grip pressure is important to balance. Too firm of a grip will not allow us to set the club in the back swing and release properly on the follow through. 3. Swing width is not something that we talk about often, but it’s important as when we swing our arms, it creates width in our swing and this allows for power. If the arms stay too close to the body, this can cause you to top the ball. Golf is a game in which we are all students for life. Keep learning and trying new things, and always remember, keep smiling and soft hands! 18 the Eagle JANUARY 2022
