Welcome to The Neighborhood! Hello Del Webb Residents. Thank you to everyone who attended our February Social. We had 36 households sign on to meet with members of the Polk County Appraisers Office for details of the Homestead Tax Exemption. Their presentation was extremely enlightening, even for us “old timers” who logged in. It is a great reminder of how much money we save every year with this ex- emption. If you missed the presentation, and this is your first year in Florida, you can find the documents on the Always Welcome Club site on the Portal. Or you can contact the Appraisers Office at pahelpdesk@polk-county.net. The deadline for filing for 2020 is March 1, 2021. I want the ENTIRE COMMUNITY to get excited about the guests we have lined up for our March 16th meeting. You will not want to miss it! After a year in Covid lockdown, where many of us have not gone to the Club House, there have been many changes going on. We might be lost as we go back and not recognize anyone at the front desk. Many new staff have been hired since last March. To help everyone get acquainted with the Montecito Club House Staff, they will be our guests!! Please Follow us on Facebook at Join us on March 16th at 6:30pm to meet Stephanie, Josh, the three Facebook.com/ front desk staff and our new Tavern Mgr! They will tell us a little about them- DelWebbOrlandoHoa selves and what they are responsible for, then take a few questions from the audience. They are very excited to meet us! Let’s start off with a positive meeting with some fantastic dialog. They will be available for half an hour, then stay on the Social for resident introductions. You might meet a new friend! The Always Welcome Club is your best networking club to meet your neighbors and now it’s your best networking tool to meet the staff which help run our fabulous club house! Make sure you set your alarm, post a note on the frig, whatever you need to do to remind yourself to turn on your computer for our virtual Social March 16th at 6:30pm. There will be invitations coming out through Jerry’s List and a blast from the Club House prior to the Social with the link. From Your DWOBoard of Directors Board Happy Spring Neighbors – what a beautiful time of year it is to call Florida your home! Warmer temps, lower humidity, less rain and a lot of sunshine! Our new landscape company, Millennium, began March 1 and they are very committed to our DWO Vision: “To be a welcoming, BEAUTIFUL community committed to creating a thriving and inspir- ing lifestyle. “ Please give them a warm welcome and be patient as they get fully acclimated. Can you believe, it is time for our 6 month progress report! Since August 18, 2020, the Board has held 20 Board meetings and one Town Hall. To date, meetings have been virtual. While we can only track the number of callers, not the actual number of residents listening, most meetings have averaged 50 callers, so it is conceivable that we have had as many as 75 residents participating. We are happy to announce that beginning March 12, in-person meeting attendance will be offered. Watch for details as far as sign-up and requirements. A big thank you to our Technology Committee who is present at every meeting ensuring the technical logistics run smoothly. They have also worked very hard to get us to the point of being able to open up the meetings to residents. Research and analysis was required, equipment needed to be purchased, testing was needed to ensure the compet- ing technologies (Zoom and the Audio requirements for the ballroom) worked together effectively and without interference. So, your understanding and patience has been appreciated. Please see pages 8 and 9 for a summary of our accomplishments for the past 6 months as well as in- process and planned projects. On Pulte items, note that even though Pulte turned the community over to the HOA on 8/18/20, we are still in transition and attempting to get everything we can from the developer at their ex- pense and not the HOA’s. In closing, we wish you a Happy St. Patrick’s Day “ May your day be touched by a bit of Irish luck, brightened by a song in your heart, and warmed by the people you love!” Respectfully, Your Board of Directors Joanne Markiewicz, President Barb Demers, Vice President Paul Frison, Treasurer Diane Galuski, Secretary Frank Ritchie, Director 4

Committee News Chartered Club Advisory Committee: CCAC The CCAC was created to serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Directors while assisting the Lifestyle Di- rector and the Property Manager. The purpose of this committee is to provide oversight and guidance to the Del Webb Chartered Clubs and to the various Special Interest Groups. We hold monthly meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 11:30 AM. At the present time, the CCAC is holding meetings with only committee members and their BOD Liaison in attendance. Prior to Covid-19, the CCAC held open meetings with the com- munity. If your chartered club or special interest group has any issues which you feel should be brought to the attention of the CCAC, please contact your club CCAC Liaison, listed on the DWO Portal under the club offic- ers. Club Officers with concerns may be invited to at- tend the CCAC meeting with DWO Phase 6 social dis- tancing protocols and a reservation in advance. Please remember that the CCAC members are always ready to help your club or special interest group whether you are meeting regularly or not. 10 10
Committee News ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE Feed Me, Seymour! If you saw Little Shop of Horrors, you may remember Audrey II, an alien plant that grows like crazy and feeds on people. At DWO, you may choose from many, many different shrubs and trees when you want to freshen up your landscape. But you are asked to install “Florida Friendly Landscaping” and stay away from prohibited invasive plant species as identified by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council. So, when you are planning some new landscaping, be sure to check out Appendices C and D of the Design Guidelines so that you understand what you can do with your landscape and don’t acci- dentally bring home an invasive plant that will take over your yard and attack your pets. (Note that the ARC is working to provide the information in these appendices in a more accessible format soon.) Then, be sure to submit an Architectural Review Committee (ARC) appli- cation – there’s a helpful checklist that shows you ex- actly what information you need to provide – and you’ll soon be on your way to a beautiful new yard. P.S. If you haven’t seen Little Shop of Horrors or want to see it again, it will be presented at the Starz Center in Tampa starting June 9. 11 11
Committee News FINES AND SUSUPENSION COMMITTEE The Fines and Suspension Committee is committed to ensuring that homeowners who have received a violation letter indicating a Hearing date have the opportunity to present their arguments and evidence to the FSC for a determination of the validity of the violation. To that end, the FSC has created Hearing procedures and member training to ensure consistency and fairness. The FSC is in need of additional homeowners to volunteer for com- mittee membership. Committee Members are only called on if a Hearing is scheduled to review an alleged violation. The more Homeowners who volunteer, the fewer times a Committee Mem- ber will be asked to participate. Questions? Contact Kim Harshbarger (kharsh13@hotmail.com) or Alice Kalamar (alikal01@aol.com) for information. If you would like to volunteer for the Fines and Suspension Committee, please send your contact information, including your address, to Stephanie Taylor (Stephanie.Taylor@fsresidential.com). 12 12
Committee News COMMUNITY GUIDELINES COMMITTEE Your Community Guidelines Committee (CGC) has been meeting every other Wednesday on the patio area behind the Lago Room. So far, the weather has cooperated with us. Apparently, there has been some confusion between the Community Rules and Regulations and the DWO Design Guidelines. The Commu- nity Rules and Regulations, which are currently being reviewed by the Community Guidelines Committee set out the rights and responsibilities of homeowners when utilizing DWO’s amenities including, but not lim- ited to, the Montecito, sports courts, pools, spas and other common ar- eas. The DWO Design Guidelines set the parameters for all exterior modifications to the DWO residential homes and are reviewed by the Architectural Review Committee. The detailed review of the Del Webb Orlando Community Guidelines, Rules and Regulations has begun and each Committee Member’s input has been invaluable in tackling this wide-scoped project. The first goal is to complete the review, solicit community input, and make recom- mendations to the Board of Directors that will clarify and streamline the information and rules contained in the document as well as to recom- mend individual rule changes that will enhance the DWO lifestyle as well as the safety of our community. We welcome your questions and comments which can be directed to Alice Kalamar (alikal01@aol.com) or any Committee Member. Alice Kalamar, Chair Bill Dvorak Ruth Snyder Siva Sivasubramanian 13 13 13

Those deceptively harmless looking little fluffs love to snuggle down in your dryer vents and lint traps. Before you know it, they multiply like, well, rabbits. Dryer lint is extremely flammable if you let it build up in the vents. You can hire some- one to do this for you, or you can do it yourself and buy a vacuum attachment made specifically for cleaning out dryer vents. Chances are this task has not been done in years. It's okay! You will feel better and safer once it's done. This will not only save you money on your dryer bills, it will protect you, your family, and your valuables. The Magic of Vinegar I couldn’t believe it, but I did witness the Power of Vinegar. I noticed that my guest bathroom’s sink had what appeared to be scratches. No matter how hard I scrubbed or what I used, they were still there. What do I do? How do you replace just the basin and not the counter and cabinet that is part of the unit? What a mess and expense. I was so frustrated! Then I remembered what my Mom told me many years ago: Rub white vinegar on the marks and they will disappear. Not be- lieving this home remedy, I tried it anyway. What did I have to lose? To my amazement, it worked! Now the sink looks new. Want your son or grandson to get married? Have him bring vinegar! Vinegar has a long and inter- esting history, especially in China. More than 2,000 years ago, vinegar played an important part in its economy, culture and even in marriage negotiations. Legend states that when a father was looking for a suitable husband for his daughter, he checked out the man’s family history and finan- cial means. However, the suitor was required to bring a large urn of Shanxi vinegar for the family. In addition, he had to have the means to produce more vinegar for future use to be considered suitable. How times where simpler then! Back to the 21st century. White vinegar has many different uses. Besides using it for salad dress- ing, white vinegar is a valuable health and cleaning agent. Moreover, it is inexpensive. As the days get warmer the mosquitos and bugs return and we get bitten, moisten a cotton ball with white vinegar and apply it to the bite. Relief! It will alleviate the sting and itch, while disinfecting the area. But what about garden weeds? Some weed killing products are found to be harmful to our plants and grass. Simple distilled white vinegar comes to the rescue! Mix 1 gallon of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of dish soap. Spray the mixture on the weeds. If you need a stronger solution, add one tablespoon of Epson Salt to the mix. Pour plenty of this “heavy-duty” weed killer solution on the weeds. Be sure to soak the roots of the “invaders.” Magic, no more weeds! The list of remedies go on and on. Whether it’s a health or cleaning problem, just look up benefits of white vinegar. I hope you find the magic solution to your problem, like I did! Submitted by Amy Setaro March 2021 26 26

Anole vs. Gecko These are the critters you see on the outside of your lanai screen, and annoyingly often on the inside too. People call them geckos. These lizards are not geckos. In the first place, we have no geckos in Polk Co., although they occur in south Florida. In the second place, you would be unlikely to see one anyway because geckos are mainly nocturnal, with large eyes for night vision. What you have in your lanai is the Cuban brown anole (pronounced ă-nōlʹ-ē). Anoles are diurnal, with smaller eyes. Some anoles, such as our native green anole, can change from green to brown, for camouflage. The color change also can result from body temperature, stress, and activity. In temperatures over 70, green anoles tend to remain green. Cuban brown anoles can change from brown to black. To establish a territory, a male anole often expands a brightly-colored fan of skin called the dewlap under the throat and bobs up and down to intimidate other males and attract females. The small territory usually includes several females. A survival technique is a readily disconnected tail left behind to a predator. But that leaves the anole less dominant in anole society. Predators include birds, cats, snakes, and other lizards. Anoles prey on in- sects. Brown anoles lay 1-2 eggs at a time every 2 weeks, for a total of 15-18 eggs/year. Green anoles lay only 1 egg at a time, but can lay several eggs in a year, between April and September. The eggs hatch in 30-45 days; anoles grow to 6-7 inches long, and can live 2-3 years. Our little lizards go back 100 million years to the time of the big lizards, the dinosaurs. Introduced from Cu- ba, the highly invasive Cuban brown anole we see here is more aggressive and productive than the green anole. It has thus mostly displaced our handsome, arboreal native and seldom-seen green anole. Count yourself lucky if you see one. –Neil Payne 28 28

DWO Cares DWO CARES, INC., AND HORIZONS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL With the generosity of our Del Webb Orlando community, this semester DWO Cares provides weekend food support to 100 Horizons Elementary students living with chronic food shortage. As a Title 1 school, Horizons students receive breakfast and hot lunches. The weekends, though, are hard for some kids. School is a safe and happy place, but anxiety and lack of concentration ramp up on Fridays as they know food may be scarce until they return to school. The students we serve live in motels, shelters, with grandparents or other family, as well as kids identified by their teachers and staff. Spring fundraiser postponed until fall. This fall we hope to have our Appetizer and Wine Fund- raiser in person at the clubhouse. However, donations are accepted all year and checks to “DWO Cares, Inc.” can be carried or mailed to John Kleiman, DWO Cares, Inc. Board chairman, at 288 Del Sol Ave., Davenport, FL 33837. $300 is the average cost per child for the school year. All donations, though, are wel- come. Another way to help is to make your Amazon purchases through Amazon Smile using the following link: https://smile.amazon.com/ch/81-1136352 Our support looks different right now. For the last few years, DWO Cares volunteers each month loaded their cars with large pantry orders from Aldi, carted cases of food up the ramp and into our designated pod classroom, loaded it into cabinets and on tables, and got it ready for another team of volunteers to do the packing. Those food pick up days provided good workouts! Weekly packing was enjoyable with friends and neighbors. The kids never complained about carrying their heavy bags of food or about what was inside those bags. Often, it was a treat for them to find and eat a snack bar before they got home. Oc- casionally, a bus driver had to remind a child not to open a box of cereal on the bus! When Aldi canceled pantry orders due to Covid-19 and we were not allowed to pack in the pod, the DWO Cares Board and Advisors, in conversation with the school, decided that using Aldi gift cards was the best option for getting support to the families. That continues today. Who we are; DWO Cares, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charity sponsored by the Community Service Com- mittee. Our mission is to provide weekend food during the school year to students in critical need at Horizons Elementary School. Vickey Fuqua DWO Cares Board Member 30 30

Book Club Corner BY TERRY MILLER The Orphan Collector by Ellen Marie Wiseman is a selection my Book Club read in December. One reason for this selection was the story takes place during the 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak. The Club pointed out comparisons and the differences with today's COVID. The narrator, Pia, is a 13 year old girl who lived in an immi- grant community in the slums of Philadelphia. The story follows her life as she navi- gates the pandemic, the war, and discrimination. Some of us thought the book was too sad and depressing. One night I thought, I just can't read this anymore, because it was really getting me down. But, I contin- ued on as the story took another turn. I am glad I finished the book, as you look for the good, the story becomes uplifting. I don't want to give too much away, in case you would like to read this book. What are we reading next? The Guest List by Lucy Foley. This book is a Reese Book Club pick and is a mystery and is being compared to a modern Agatha Christie novel. This story takes place on a remote island off Ireland. Don't you just love books that take you to far off places?
