FROM THE PRESIDENT of building. Hopefully most of you have seen the first cut & of the Phase II master plan by now, perhaps at a special interest group meeting but, if not, you can see it at an GENERAL upcoming Town Hall meeting. This plan is moving forward MANAGER quickly now after a lot of refinement based on Member and committee feedback, structural findings, etc. As it was with the third floor, Phase II will also encompass the gathering and compilation of Members’ thoughts, followed by a series of debates, refinements and concepts by the PCG, DRC and other key committees before presentation to the Members and ultimately the GC as a whole. It will thus, once again, be an evolving process that will require as much feedback and involvement from Members as we can get. So please, stay informed, stay connected and keep the ideas coming. The Club, and the GC in particular, is committed to an outcome that is membership driven and uses the mission and values of The American Club today (these can be viewed on our redevelopment microsite at www.redevelopment.org. Why is it that time seems to go by a lot faster as we get sg). We’ll continue to use different mediums of feedback older? Although the pool and Scotts Road building facilities will be open through July for Members to enjoy, we are holding the party before school gets out, so that everyone has a chance to attend and have a last hurrah at Poolside. This is the first time in many years that the pool is being included in our Club-wide party, so be sure to join us for what promises to be a fun and memorable evening. I’d like to thank all of you who have taken part in our redevelopment focus groups. Your feedback and input is important during this process to ensure that we end up with a club that we both enjoy and are proud of. NEWS T h e A m e r i c a n C lu b i s S i n g a p o r e S e rv i c e C l a s s C e rt i f i e d We are proud to announce that The Club is one of Singapore’s latest organizations to achieve the Spring Singapore Business Excellence Service Class status. The Service Class (S-Class) status is awarded to organizations that have adopted and developed customer-centric approaches to service standards, and highlights capabilities in service leadership and agility to enhance customer experience and delight. In particular, the attainment of this standard is testament to The Club’s commitment of delivering excellent service and creating value for Members and stakeholders, thereby contributing to a vibrant community and the larger social dining industry. At the Award Winners Sharing Conference in March, only 30 other organizations were presented Business Excellence awards across the 3 disciplines of Innovation, People Development and Service. The Club is also the only club in Singapore to have attained 2 Business Excellence Certifications. In tandem with the certifications, we have seen great results this past year, with staff engagement levels in the top quartile of all companies surveyed in Singapore and higher than companies in the ‘Hotels, Restaurant & Leisure’ category, on top of an industry-leading low staff attrition rate (and the lowest in living memory at The Club). We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our team members for making this Club such a special place, as well as to our Members for their incredible support and encouragement. The Business Excellence (BE) initiative is administered by SPRING Singapore to help organizations strengthen their management systems and processes for high performance through adopting the business excellence framework. 3 THE AMERICAN CLUB MAY // JUN MAR APR 2016 2016

On March 17, The Club played host to some 200 servicemen and women from the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) at its Poolside Navy BBQ. The event, which was proudly supported by the Navy League, saw the sailors enjoying an evening of good food and good fun, augmented by a superb live band and an incredible atmosphere of camaraderie. It was also a wonderful opportunity for Members and guests to meet and bond with fellow military personnel. Our thanks to all Members who sponsored the crew for their support and help in making the event so special. 7 THE AMERICAN CLUB MAY / JUN 2016
Memorial Day May 30 We, the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of America. Especially on Memorial Day, Americans honor those who have given their all in service to their country. We remember their commitment and dedication to: Justice, domestic tranquility, the blessing of liberty. On Monday, May 30, join us in honoring America’s veterans, and the men and women serving in our military forces today. MAY / JUN 2016 THE AMERICAN CLUB 8
The American Club Redevelopment Project It may be hard to imagine how the redevelopment will reshape our future building. The image on the left shows The Club as it is today, prior to any changes. The yellow component is the Scotts Road side of the building that will be demolished. The image on the right shows what The Club may look like after redevelopment is completed. As you can see, by rebuilding the Scotts Road building The Club is able to couple the circulation between the buildings and unlock the synergies between them. This “unlocking” should pave the way for the “main street” concept that should link areas more easily, and also create greater back-of-house efficiencies, which should translate into a greater level of service for Members. Level 3 This month we begin construction on Level 3 in the space that was previously the Colonial Room. This new construction will house the new libraries and Business Center, and will provide a welcome space for those looking to work quietly, organize meetings, browse the stacks, research and read, or simply share a coffee and subdued conversation with a colleague. As you look at the latest schematic of the space, you will see that this is a transformational area – The Club took the best from its existing spaces and developed it through extensive focus groups with both Members and staff, who collaborated on this portion of the project for many months. Level 3 is being redeveloped first so that existing facilities (libraries and Business Center) in the Scotts Road side of the building can be moved into their new space before it is demolished. This allows Members to continue using these services with minimal interruption. Members will be able to use the Scotts Road facilities through the end of July. Library users on the third floor will be able to enjoy Overdrive as part of our new library services starting in September. 9 THE AMERICAN CLUB MAY / JUN 2016
Basement 1 Construction of the temporary facilities in B1 also begins this month. This space, which will be located in the B1 carpark, will temporarily house the Youth area, Administration office and community partner offices. As part of this scope of work, approximately 40 parking spaces will be occupied to make room for the temporary facilities. To compensate for this, the 20 staff parking spaces will be moved off-site, so that the net loss to Members is 20 spaces. As always, The Club will provide complimentary valet during peak periods to minimize any inconvenience to Members. The Club is pleased to welcome Robert Cliff Hoffman on board as its new Gym Manager. With 15 years in the fitness industry and extensive Personal Training Management experience under his belt, Robert is set to add great value to the team and take the Personal Training program at the Gym to new heights. Robert’s approach to health and wellness is both holistic and functional. He finds great satisfaction in supporting and motivating Members to achieve their goals while being a trusted partner in their fitness journeys. His broad repertoire of technical fitness training skills includes certifications by the National Academy of Sports Medicine, Personal Training Academy Global, Pre and Post Rehab, Pre and Post Natal, Functional Fusion, TRX Suspension Trainer, TRX Rip Trainer, Vipr, BOSU Ball, International Kettlebell Sports Federation Academy and Self Myofascial Release Technique Core Certification – Trigger Point Therapy. In his new role, Robert will oversee all Gym-related activities and events as well as Personal Training matters at The Club. Look out for him around the premises or when you go for your next workout! Robert in 100 words… What made you decide to join The Club? I joined The Club as a freelance Personal Trainer after leaving the commercial gym environment. What motivated me was the knowledge that this is a Members’ club that’s all about the service, not numbers. What is your vision for the Gym and Personal Training at The Club? My vision is to improve the Member experience by delivering quality service with passion – to lead a team of highly committed health and fitness professionals to motivate and encourage Members to achieve their goals. What are some misconceptions about Personal Training and fitness that people have? Some people think that Personal Training is just about having someone drill you with exercises that make you tired. Some think that a one-hour session weekly is all it takes to get them their results. The truth of the matter is that diet and lifestyle play equally important roles too. Trainers will help to motivate, educate and inspire. Tell us something about yourself that few people know. I may look unapproachable or unfriendly but I really do love to assist others and share my knowledge. MAY / JUN 2016 THE AMERICAN CLUB 32
