May meeting Thirty ladies gathered on a sunny afternoon for tea in the Old Vicarage garden. They were greeted with a glass of Prosecco and then were able to admire the garden, catch up with old friends and meet new at this first event in the 2021 calendar Thanks to the ladies who contributed cakes and to all for purchasing raffle tickets in aid of WI funds. It was lovely to see everyone again and to be able to socialise, if socially distanced. The committee has been busy planning the programme for the rest of the year and hope to welcome members back to the Parish Hall in September. June Meeting Kinnerley WI held their first meeting post pandemic in the garden of Dovaston House. Many thanks to Hilary for opening her garden and the amazing view for us. New members and old enjoyed meeting and greeting each other. Sara, the president, took us through voting on the NFWI resolution for 2021, “to increase awareness of ovarian cancer”. This was carried unanimously. Annual Raffle tickets for National Federation were sold along with tickets for our own funds. Prizes of eggs (thank you Sonia) and a plant were excitedly received. Wine or cordial was available along with an array of various appetizing food, donated by members. Michele Moore talked us through the arrangements for the next meeting, a meal at the Cross Keys on July 8th and members made their choices from the menu. Sue Blackburn, our treasurer, gave a report of a healthy bank balance despite the fact that subs have been reduced this year. 4
We have 14 signed up new members. If anyone else is interested in joining, please contact Sara, 682819 or Angela 683881. You will be made very welcome. As I write this I can say, on behalf of all of us, how much we are looking forward to meeting up again on July 1st. (Garden Meeting, 2pm Ashgrove, Chapel Lane.) There will not be a meeting in August, so the next meeting will be Thursday September 2nd at 2 pm in St Mary's Church Kinnerley. We will confirm this nearer the time. And hope and pray nothing untoward will happen before then. Enjoy the summer. Keep safe and well Sue B 5
CHURCH NEWS Greetings from your Rector, This time last year I wrote about what July 2021 might look like. I think it’s fair to say it was a touch optimistic, my harsher critics would say I simply got it wrong, and that I do that often. I don’t think any of us thought we would still be in a pandemic in July 2021. It’s nearly two years since I became the Rector of this benefice, and sad- ly the majority of that time has been during a pandemic. The school leavers’ service I optimistically predicted last July is not going to hap- pen, but we still take a moment to wish our Yr6 leavers well and to pray for refreshment over the summer for them and all the pupils and teach- ers of our fabulous local schools. Restrictions have not disappeared entirely, but our local shops and eater- ies have imaginatively and courageously weathered the pandemic and my gratitude for their endeavours during this pandemic is echoed by many in our communities. The Kinnerley Fete will once again not take place in July, but I still like the idea of a village extravaganza- perhaps early September would be a good time for a pop-up Fete and associated activities? Please let me know what you think and if you want to get involved. As we slowly but surely head back towards normal, now is the time that we will really begin to notice how much has changed, both around us and within us. We cannot go through an event like a pandemic without it changing us. Now, perhaps more than ever, we need to be aware of the mental health of those around us. In a world of uncertainty and change, one thing is steadfast and un- changing, and that is God. The pandemic has taught us a lot about our- selves, a lot about our frailties and our wants and needs. Perhaps as our church buildings finally fully reopen, now is the time to learn more about the bigger story we all play a part in? Yours Revd Chris Our five Anglican churches have a new Benefice website at www.kmkmm.org If you have an item you would like included, please email: brianjturner@btinternet.com or call 01691682339 6

KINNERLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWS May Parish Council Meeting The May Parish Council meeting saw a return to meetings in person after over 12 months of meeting remotely via Zoom. Covid restrictions still apply to how meetings can be run, so things are not exactly back to ‘normal’ yet. Following the May elections, all re-elected councillors who were present signed their Declarations of Acceptance of Office, including a new councillor for the Argoed Ward, Mr Stephen Hilton, who was welcomed by the Chair of the meeting, Cllr Charles Green. Cllr Nick Barclay was re-elected as Chair of the Parish Council, together with Cllr Charles Green who was re-elected as Vice Chair. Cllr Green noted that the current Parish Clerk would be leaving in early July for health reasons, and expressed his gratitude for her advice and guidance over the four years she had been in post. The new owners of land in Dovaston where a development known as Darwin House (previously The Hollies) is proposed were present at the meeting. In the ‘Public Participation’ part of the agenda they told the Parish Council that they were happy to talk to anyone with concerns about their proposals. It was noted that the application relating to Darwin House had been deferred to the meeting on 21st June to allow time for proper consideration of the amended proposals by councillors. KINNERLEY SCHOOL LEOs In class they have started a debate with our fellow schools in the federation. Their question was, “Is it wrong to spend money on space travel when there is so much poverty in the world?” Both sides put forward some very enthusiastic arguments including, ‘We may need to find another planet to live on if we destroy this one, whilst the argument came back that we could spend the money improving this one. The final result was that the ‘no’ team won. Snowys The children are still enjoying their swimming lessons and still look forward to each week. I’m sure in this weather the dip in the pool is very welcoming. They are also continuing their science topic looking at plants used as food. They made an extensive lists of fruit and vegetables which is lovely to see. They have studied what plants need with two separate experiments. What do plants need to grow and what do they need to be planted in. We were sur- prised to see the bean in water grew the best!!! Barn Owls All the Barn Owls planted a broad bean seed and they are now happily grow- ing in the allotment. We will all look forward to tasting them later in the year. As part of this topic they did a science experiment putting seeds in different places. One with no light and one with no heat. They were surprised to see the one in the fridge grow but be yellow!!! All the classes are still having lessons from Shrewsbury Town in the commu- nity. Mr Taylor is focusing on athletic skills, running, jumping and throwing. Future Olympians here we come. Knockin Medical Centre 01691 682231 www.knockinmediclcentre.nhs.uk CORONA VIRUS VACCINATION At time of writing this over 2500 Knockin patients have received at least one dose of vaccine, 1400 have had both doses. The provision of vaccine clinics at Severnfields has now come to an end. Clinics will continue to be run in both Shrewsbury and Oswestry by the National Booking System. If you are eligible please contact 119 or go online to book your appointments. WE ARE OPEN FOR BUSINESS As England moves out of the latest Lockdown restrictions, we continue to offer a range of appointments for GPs, Nurses and our Healthcare Assistants. We are continuing to ask that the first contact with a GP is done via a phone call in most cases. If required the GP will then arrange for you to attend the surgery for a face to face review, this can normally be arranged within 24 hours, more often than not on the same day. We are continuing to recall patients for reviews of their long term conditions; this often involves attending for routine blood tests followed by a telephone appointment with Tessa. Please help us by booking your appointments if we contact you. The dispensary remains open as it has done throughout the last year. Please remember to wear a face covering when attending the surgery in person and where possible please come alone. CORONA VIRUS If you believe that you may be showing symptoms of the virus or you are self isolat- ing because a family member has symptoms, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO COME TO THE SURGERY. If you require medication during this time please ask a friend or neighbour to collect on your behalf. Please bear with us during this difficult time for everyone. Rest assured we are do- ing everything we can to ensure that we continue to offer the highest standard of care to all of our patients. Prescriptions The prescription request box continues to be emptied every day at 2 pm. We would also request that if you are able and have access to the internet that you register to request your medication via one of the online sites. Ann continues to get a large number of people ringing to order medication. This slows down the dispensing process. If you can order online, it is quick and easy and the requests can be pro- cessed at our end very quickly. Please ask at reception to be set up to order online. All you need is an email address and access to the internet. 16
Please try not to ring us “just to check” if your medication is ready. We are receiving a high volume of these calls and it is taking up a lot of the admin and dispensary team’s time. Please be aware that if we are experiencing difficulty in obtaining your item, Ann will send you a text or contact you. If you hear nothing please arrange collection 7 days after you request. New Patients We are still taking on new patients living in our practice area. If you would like to register with us, you can visit our website or just telephone the surgery, one of the Ad- min team will be able to sort out your registration. We may ask you to have a tele- phone appointment with one of the team if you are living with a long term condition or have regular medication. Data Opt Out You may have seen the information in the press regarding the change to the way that NHS Digital works with the data that we hold on your behalf. If you would like to opt out of having your information used by NHS Digital then you can either go online, and record your choices or there is a form on our website or in reception for you to com- plete and return to us. We will then update our system and your information will not be shared. Please be reassured that your care will not be affected by opting out of this data sharing. Contact Details We are always trying to keep your details up to date. Please can you ensure that you tell the receptionist if you have changed your mobile number? This means we can send you a text message with details of future appointments and or specific health infor- mation. We can also keep you up to date with any advice regarding the current pan- demic. Test Results As you can appreciate we have a lot of phone calls in the mornings. If you are ringing to find out the results of tests or investigations please ring in an afternoon, preferably between 2 and 6 pm. This gives the Doctors more time to view and comment on your result prior to your phoning. With the NHS App or the other online services can view results of blood tests and x-rays online without having to make an appointment to see the GP. With demand for appointments rising continually at present we would like to thank all of you for your continued support and patience. We strive to offer all of you the best service that we can possibly provide. As we enter the winter period we will continue to try and find ways to ensure that everyone using our services is kept as safe as possible. We understand that sometimes this can be frustrating but we would ask that you do not take this frustration out on the staff at the practice, they are all working as hard as pos- sible with the wellbeing of our patients at the heart of all that they do. Thank you We would like to thank all of our patients for the kind words and positive feedback that we have received over the last year. We have been very touched by your comments and your support for the work that we have been doing; it has been very much appreci- ated by everyone here at Knockin. 17

MELVERLEY CHURCH Melverley church news The church is now open for prayer and welcoming back visitors. The first service will be on Sunday 4th July at 6pm. We can sit in groups of six/ two households. We are still unable to sing in church so hope it is a fine evening for singing outside. Sue MELVERLEY VILLAGE HALL NEWS Melverley Hall Update I’m pleased to say that finally, work is going to begin on the kitchen at the hall by the end of the month. Once the walls have been re-plastered, after a coat of paint we plan to fit it out with durable stainless steel kitch- en units. Following this, the refurbishment of the ladies toilets which will include a toilet for the disabled and a baby changing table. We also intend to catch up on some overdue maintenance to give the hall a fresh new look. 20
Some of you may have noticed the flowery window boxes at the front of the hall and our thanks go to Sarah Bennett and the students of the Derwen College at Walford for potting them up for us. We are always looking for a little help keeping the outside of the hall tidy so if anyone out there would be happy to give a little time to do a bit of hedge trim- ming or weeding we would be pleased to see you. Paperbank I thought I would put in a little reminder about the Paper bank which alt- hough doesn’t raise a huge amount of money is still one of the ways we fund raise towards the hall’s upkeep. Please think of calling at the hall before putting your papers and magazines in the blue box on a Wednesday or give me a call and I would be happy to collect them. In the Garden All of a sudden the gardens are blooming and the veggies are growing. Once again as I did last year, I have planted up my window boxes with Lettuce, Carrots, Peas & Beetroot. It’s lovely to look out of the kitchen window to see the carrot tops growing and I have radishes everywhere. Just a few seeds planted every few days and 4 weeks later you have something to enjoy. Great for children to grow as they don’t take too long. I also picked my first strawberries today and they were so juicy. Just for fun, one thing I like to do is to grow plants from veg trim- mings. Last year I grew a celery plant from the bit chopped off the bot- tom and it was feathery and more of a floral display with little white flow- ers. Guess what I found growing in another pot this year...tiny celery plants which I shall plant out and see if they produce anything. Memories of Melverley I am still waiting to hear from anyone who might have a photo to share, so come on folks, have a look back in your photo albums as I’m sure there are plenty of memories out there that would interest us all includ- ing the newer residents in the village. And Finally...... Thanks Gaby Edwards for all your hard work on the committee over the last couple of years especially behind the bar!! and Good Luck for your Masters Degree next year. Karen 21
PENTRE AND EDGERLEY Hi Readers, The answer to last month’s question is the Mustang. In early 1937 the Berlin Auto Exhibition was held in Berlin. Amongst the high ranking Nazis attending with Hitler was his deputy Hermann Goering. Goering was taken with the Mercedes 500K roadster. He asked if Mercedes could make a special version for him; he required armour plated doors, bullet proof glass and painted in sky blue metallic, this being one of the first cars to have a metallic paint finish, and being modest, his family coat of arms on both doors. Also the seating was tight due to Goering’s weight but it could be modified to accommodate him. The car was ready by the end of 1937 and the bill paid by Hitler who had a brass plate fixed to the glove compartment lid stating just that. Goering was delighted. By 1940 the metallic paint needed to be redone and also due to Goering becoming even more obese the seating had to be modified again to allow him to sit without the steering wheel jamming into his stomach. By 1945 with the war almost lost the car ended up parked in the underground car park of the Platahof Hotel near where Goering’s house was situated both being bombed by the allies. It was discovered by advancing American troops who suspected the car may be a bobby trap and fired several shots into it. Satisfied, they managed to get the car running. It was soon commandeered by 2 star General Taylor for his personal staff car. Now the property of the U. S. Army it was shipped to the USA where it was on display to raise money for war bonds. The army finally sold the car off as surplus at auction. Depending on which account you read it was either Goering or the Americans who gave this car it's nick name. The question is what is it? Nature Notes Have you ever wondered where birds sleep? Most of our garden birds are di- urnal (active in daylight) and at dusk they all disappear. Activity at the bird feeders stops completely. Small flocks of starlings merge into larger flocks, then are suddenly just not there. All remains quiet and still (apart from the occasional owl) - until we’re woken at break of day by the dawn chorus. Birds don’t generally sleep in nests; the only time they do so is when they have eggs or chicks to keep warm. Daytime haunts such as low branches, shrubs and feeders are definitely not where they choose to spend the nights, being far too exposed and therefore dangerous. Probably the most popular place to roost is high up in the tree canopy, as close to a trunk as possible. This location gives some protection from weather and from predators. If you have a large tree in or near your garden, they may not be as far away as it seems. Most birds remain near to where they spend their days, although gulls will fly a fair distance between their feeding grounds and roosts. In the absence of a safe tree, a nook or a cranny will do – a hole in a trunk, an unoccupied nesting box or roosting pouch, a rafter or crevice in a barn, all are useful and relatively safe. Starlings like to fly around their chosen spot for a while, then the whole mur- muration will suddenly fall into the night roost, commonly a thick stand of reeds, seeming to all drop out of the sky at the same moment. This type of vegetation can be virtually impenetrable to predators and offers good shelter from foxes and similar. ‘Birds of a feather flock together’ goes the old adage – and it’s generally true for roosting as well, though in winter small birds of different species may hud- dle together. Conservation of heat is the overriding factor, as a group of small birds packed tightly together will keep much warmer than individuals sleeping alone. Being in a group also means they can take turns in staying awake to watch for predators. Birds that roost in flocks tend to move about during the night, allowing each one to spend some time on the edges and some in the warm centre of the flock. Local Health Champion worried about access to NHS dentists Healthwatch Shropshire has been hearing from some Shropshire residents about the problems they are having getting to see a NHS dentist. People are reporting that their dentist will no longer see them on the NHS and they will need to go private, mothers are reporting that they can’t get their children seen by an NHS dentist and those who have recently moved, including military per- sonnel leaving the forces, cannot find a dentist offering NHS treatment in their new location. The NHS provides a ‘Find a Dentist’ service online but many people are reporting that the information is very out of date and despite ringing round dentists on the list none are currently taking NHS patients. Lynn Cawley, Chief Officer of Healthwatch Shropshire, explained that, “In the past we have heard of these problems and when we reported them to NHS England they were able to organise extra capacity in the areas affected but the pandemic has made things much more difficult, especially with the restrictions it has placed on dentists’ ability to see people. Oral health is tremendously im- portant and people are worried about the long term affects this lack of access will have. As we come out of this lockdown we really want to hear people’s experiences of finding NHS dental treatment in Shropshire and find out if this issue is specific to particular parts of the county or widespread. People can contact us on 01743 237884 or online https://healthwatchshropshire.uk.engagementhq.com/dentistry-in-shropshire ” Healthwatch Shropshire is the independent consumer champion for health and social care in Shropshire. It gathers the views and experiences of patients, ser- vice users, carers, and the general public about services including hospitals, GPs, mental health services, community health services, pharmacists, opti- cians, residential care and children’s services. It also has statutory powers that it can use to influence service provision by encouraging improvements 29

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne This is a painting that I have just finished, it is of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in Northumberland. Lindisfarne is an extremely popular tourist attraction, but its history goes back a long way. King Oswald wanted to reintroduce Christianity to the North-East and he employed St Aidan, an Irish monk from the Scottish island of Iona, to convert Northumbria to Celtic Christianity. Aidan establishes a monastery on the island of Lindisfarne in 635 and becomes the first Bishop of Lindisfarne. Sadly, King Oswald was reputably killed in 642, by the Mercians at the Battle of Maserfield and his body hung on a tree which became known as Oswalds tree and as the years passed by it changed to Oswestry as we know it today. A few of you who live in Kinnerley might have known my mum Jennie Bruce, mums full name was Jennie Oswald Bruce and I have recently discovered that her middle name Oswald has been given to previous generations of female ancestors going back as far as we can trace. Mum always said that she believed there was a distant family connection to Lindisfarne, ironically mum was born in the Northeast of England and ended her days in a care home in Oswestry but not I might add hanging from a tree like King Oswald. Kinnerley Parish Paths Partnership (P3) Kinnerley Parish Paths Partnership (P3) We’ve been busy carrying out work across the par- ish but as this piece is being written, things are on hold again because we need to get hold of more of the necessary materials like stiles and rails from the Council. They are very happy to provide them to us but they are themselves waiting to receive what they’ve ordered from the sawmill. In the meantime, we’re continuing to discuss pro- jects with local landowners and the Council and put them into a priority order with the most well used local routes getting looked at first. We’ve currently got roughly two dozen rights of way lined up for work of some kind as and when we can get the “furniture.” If you’ve got access to Facebook, you can see what we’ve been up to recently by visiting the Kinnerley Footpaths page. As the lockdown eases, I’m sure that we’ll soon be able to re-commence our regular face to face meetings. It’s been quite a while since we got together! As ever, if anyone has any issues on local rights of way or wishes to join in with the P3 activities they can contact Charles Matthews on 07548 283447 or email kinnerleyfootpaths@gmail.com Knockin Parish Paths Partnership (P3) If you like walking our local paths and can carry some secateurs to trim back, volunteer to refurbish, or just report a problem please contact Pam Ward 01691 682485 32
