With a state championship on the line getting a good start was imperative. Graham Sherring’s RETUNED took out the double, winning both the 2018 Australian Sports Boat Queensland Championships and the 2018 Queensland AMS Championships. Commodore Kerry Noyes was in attendance to present the “Commodores Trophy” to the 2017 winner. This trophy is presented to the player with the highest aggregate of his or her best six games played during the year. Going into the last game of 2017 we had no idea who the winner would be. It all hinged on the results at “Palmer Colonial”. There were half a dozen contenders an a very surprised Peter Whitehead emerged the winner. What a player! Attendances were steady in 2017 with an average of twenty-two players attending the ten games we played. Terry Stephenson was re elected President and Paul Valle was re elected Captain. Day 1 Tuesday 26th Start: Great preparation had ensured that Fortunately, there had been no major changes in the forecast. we had most aspects under control. Getting the sat phone to The brains trust went to work on fixing the track. A couple of work was the only issue that could have prevented us from hours later with Gus swinging from the mast, the new lightened starting. Fortunately, Rory applied himself to the task (which was and shortened track was back on and operational. Back to the A3 complicated when rushed) and we got a few phone calls away but now sailing too high at 150. At around 6pm a large rain cloud to check it was all working. Rod and Graham attended the final went past. Being cautious about sudden gusts we changed from weather briefing. Briefing was a waste of time as no one could spinnaker to JT and used the opportunity to head closer to shore hear the softly spoken BOM presenter and she was just presenting using the rain cloud breeze. By 9pm we were closer to the coast material from the web site. Graham attended the separate Roger off Cape Touville. By midnight we were in the expected southerly Badham personal briefing where we were given a final thumb change with 10kn from the SE und J3. drive with the latest forecasts. Which was fortunate as we had Day 4 Friday 29th: Early in the wee hours, the winds dropped and trouble getting updated ones until we were off Maria Island three we were in the expected trough. That night we did all we could days later. Roger had very kindly run a routing for our boat which to keep the boat moving in the right direction. Most of the night coincided with the routing we had been developing over previous was spent under Code 0 at AWA 40 -60 just trying to keep moving. weeks. That gave us more confidence in the predictions. The In the middle of the night we had a close encounter with Reve forecast on Christmas night had us arriving in 3d and 19 - 21h. which seemed to be following us around. It was hard to work out The forecast looked great for a following breeze all the way down which way they were going due to all their red head torches. until mid-Tasmania. The key challenge was going to be transiting Chris’s Port watch did a great job keeping the boat moving in across a small trough that we were expected to meet on the SE very light conditions until dawn on Friday. Friday was a wonderful coast of Tasmania at about 9pm on Thursday night 29th. day running down the East Tasmanian coast under spinnaker. At We started in a 5 -10kn Easterly turning NE. A conservative start dawn, we were still under Code 0 but we then transitioned to A2 saw us well away from the conflict that occurred at the boat and then S2 as the wind came back to N. The winds were light end of our start. We were a minute late for the start but clear 10 – 15kn and very steady. They were slowly backing to N and of traffic and in an unobstructed lane of breeze. We tacked up increasing to 20kn. We rounded Tasman Light at 1700 hrs in good to turning mark X with the J1M/H. Unfortunately, the around form in a strong 20 kn Northerly. A sudden gust to 30kn created shroud sheeting doesn’t allow good pointing so we only narrowly some excitement as we changed course to West towards Cape beat Kearns to the turning mark. From there we eased sheets Roul. I missed the excitement as the navigator had to call in at to turning mark Y. After Y, we headed further off the breeze to this stage to give an estimate of when we expected to finish. I 160 and changed to the JT. At 5pm the wind had risen to 20kn estimated 02.30 am. Bizarrely within an hour we were becalmed and we changed down to the J3. By 7pm we were back on the at Cape Roul. The Northerly had followed around Tasman Light JT and doing over 8kn in the right direction. We were aiming for but was now dead. We awaited the forecast new breeze from the the NW quadrant of a large eddy positioned off Jarvis Bay. If we SW. We were surrounded by similarly becalmed yachts. Raising got it right we would pick up one to two knots of East Australian the Code 0 soon had us under way. We got going again and Current in our favour for twelve hours from about 11pm to Wed had a solid 10 – 15 kn SW as we crossed Storm Bay towards Iron lunch time when we got spat out of the SW quadrant and started Pot in last light. At Iron Pot in blackness we were once again heading towards Gabo Island. We had an uneventful night under becalmed. From then to the finish is was a mix of being becalmed the JT as the wind backed further to the NE. By midnight we or steaming along in a 10kn SW at about 8 kn. were abeam of Jarvis Bay. Bizarrely, the final forecast done from home the night prior to Day 2 Wednesday 27th: By midnight we were back on the J3 and race start had us rounding Tasman Light at 4pm on 29th. We then to the JT at 2pm. Wind had dropped to 13kn and backed to rounded within an hour or so of this estimate from four days about TWD 30. At dawn, we swapped to the A3 fractional still earlier. headlining on 170MB with 15kn backed to TWD 20. By 1600 hrs Day 4 Saturday 30th Finish: As we got further up the Derwent we were steaming down the coast with a poled-out blast reacher the wind veered to NW. Some time was spent trying to identify and one reef. The wind had picked up to 25 – 30kn and our boat exactly which lights were the finish line. We tacked up and speed was 10 – 12kn. The brains trust overcame the challenge of finished at 0240 hrs under a spectacular full moon. Apart from the #2 reef line coming undone. Well done Paul for suggesting the the start up the harbour three days earlier this was the only spanner. Well done foredeck for acrobatics hanging off the side of tacking we did in the race – and it showed! Showing due respect the boat to get the reef back in. It was important to get it back in to our achievements, the race committee moored us beside both before dark … just in case. Wild Oats XI and Black Jack. We were met with well-wishers at “Just in case’ happened at 1630 when in a gust with an the dock and spilt a couple of bottles of rum to celebrate. After unfavourable wave, we rounded up to windward. To win the division we would have had to sail 12% Problem due to fact that inverters need more than 12v to operate faster overall! Might have been close to achieving if not for the correctly. Changing our optimal routing polar from 85% to 100% would have As written by our Navigator Graham Costello had us finish 16 hrs earlier. If we could have sailed our polars we probably would have won our division. But to achieve that we would have had to have sailed the S4 into Bass Strait and during the night whilst the winds were 25 to 30kn for a boats speed of just over 10 kn for 12 hours over the night of 28/29 Dec. Overall IRC winner Ichi Ban (1.395) TCF 2:12:13:31 (~ 60 hrs) – to beat Ichi Ban we would have had to sail 35% faster! Ichi Ban spends millions on their campaign. They had put a new hull on their TP52. Most of the crew were professional sailors. Half the crew were expert helmsmen and trimmers. Driving through the night in 20 – 30 kn of northerly they blew out two brand new spinnakers and crashed multiple times. Quest TP52 wiped out with the helmsman breaking the carbon fibre wheel with his chest and putting six crew in the water. Probably not appropriate for our standard. ORCI Another Painkiller finished 45th. Polars: I had the polars set on 85% for optimal routing. We seemed to be ahead of these much of the time, but bizarrely with some unexpected setbacks such as the occasional becalming or granny gybe or misfortune, that is pretty much what we sailed to. Consequently, if we could sail to 100% of our polars we would have come close to winning our division on handicap. Sails: We got to see many of the sails for the first time. A good investment would be to gather some quantitative data on each of the sails and then update the sail plan and polars. Both the Jib Tops were excellent. JT1 Med/Heavy – old sail, no battens, sheets around the spreaders. Is there some way to sheet inside the shrouds? Just need one car to be brought forward (even temporarily on a strop). Will not sail higher than AWA 40 or TWA 72 to maintain 6.5 to 7kn BSP in 9 – 11kn TWS Spinnakers held up well. We would have tried the stay sail but were using the topping lift as a halyard. Code 0 was excellent. Rolled in is a good option to get going in drifter conditions then roll out and sail at AWA 40 - 50 to get the boat going Sat phone: Would be good to have this set up properly. Excellent back up and only way to get weather if distant from shore mobile reception. Working with Predict Wind offshore on Rod’s iPad, but needs to be integrated to Expedition. Logistics: Food was great. Call out to Carolyn for an excellent effort preparing the food and spending quite a lot of time below decks preparing the meals. Probably need someone to be responsible for double checking all aspects as there was a bit of an issue with water which Carolyn had expected had been filled up. Great idea having water bottles as well and keeping some as reserve. 23 | iN SYnC | Southport Yacht Club
