Fastway Couriers Cat Weekend!
Congratulations Warren Guinea and SYC Commodore Kerry
Noyes, division A winner of the 2017 Fastway Couriers
Cat Weekend. Following closely behind in second, Chris
Noyes sailing FASTWAY COURIERS, and 2016 winner Andrew
Wilson, TEEBEEAY coming in at third place.
Philip Kellond-Knight won Division B on GEOFFREY, followed
by George Morton, 3 PINTS and Philip Robbins, NO WAITING,
only six points just behind finishing second and third place
overall.
With entries numbers exceeding 2016, 24 off-the-beach
catamaran entrants flocked from all over Queensland
to compete at the Gold Coast’s Fastway Couriers Cat
Weekend. Hosted at the Club’s Hollywell Sailing Squadron
from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th February.
Racing was conducted at the deep hole and around crab
island, giving competitors three days of high intensity
off the beach sailing, competing in a wide range of long
passage races and short windward-leeward courses to suit
the taste and abilities of all competitors.
Thank you to our proud sponsors of the regatta, Fastway
Couriers along with the wonderful volunteers who
dedicated their time and efforts into making this such a
fantastic regatta.

The SYC social golf group completed the 2016 year having
played many of the finest courses on the Gold Coast. The
weather was mostly fine although a few spots of rain
resulted in some cancellations for our day at Ocean Shores.
The attendance average was twenty one per game which
was down on the previous year.
Our annual presentation and Christmas get together was
held at the Club on the 6th December. The evening, which
was enjoyed by all, commenced with drinks and canapes on
the pontoon followed by dinner on the western deck.
The Commodore’s Trophy was presented to the winner,
Terry Stephenson by Commodore Kerry Noyes. Runner up
was Phil Kellond-Knight.
I have been elected president for my fifth term and Paul
Valle is the new club captain. We have booked eleven courses
for 2017 which include Palm Meadows, Arundel, Sanctuary
Cove, The Glades, Ocean Shores, Surfers Paradise, Robina,
Windaroo, Southport, Murwillumbah, and Colonial.
The SYC Golf Group is always looking for new members

courses, always take a cart, have a light lunch afterwards
and provide generous prizes. Any member interested in

Cruising with L’Attitudes
My wife Vicki and I have been Gold Members since we
were active in the Wednesday racing scene on our old boat
SUNBIRD a few years back. 2 years ago we got a bigger
boat, sold the house, and went cruising. We come back
each Christmas for a few months, to visit Dux, and the
Club and earn a few dollars. It is good to see that Peter
has kept Dux as good as, or better than, it used to be, and
it is a pleasure to take our overseas friends in for a visit.
Christmas 2012-2013 we sailed to Tasmania, and we were
under Cape Raoul when Wild Oats came around the corner.
There was just us and the helicopter, the rest of the
cowards were hiding up the Derwent which was probably a
better idea, as we had shredded a screacher and a jib just
crossing Storm Bay. We got back from Tassie in February,
and it was crossing Bass Strait that inspired us to get a
bigger boat. The Seawind 1000 is a tough little boat, but
unsuited to comfortable ocean crossings. It is still doing
service on the Broadwater, with Darren having given it a
nice yellow wrap.
Having sold the house and moved onto our 12 year old
Belize 43, we set off back down the coast to Sydney, via
the Hawkesbury, then back up to the Whitsundays in time
for the annual Shaggers rendezvous. During our sojourns
we keep meeting the same people and the same boats,
and always meeting more. Occasionally they are flying the
SYC burgee, more often than not they are SICYC as well.
Highlights were the Clarence, Lake Macquarie and Port
Stephens. The Hawkesbury and Middle Harbour were also
worth a visit or two. Along the way I wrotes articles for
various magazines about the places we have been.
Last year we finally got the paperwork done, and went
offshore with a three month cruise over to New Caledonia.
We did the usual cruiser thing and made lots of new friends
in Ile des Pines and even got over to the Loyalty Islands for
a while. Highlights were Beautemps Beaupre, Ouvea, Kuto
and Hanomera Bays, Bai de Gadji, M Be Kou, Bai de Prony
and Bai du Nord.
We came back via the Chesterfield reef and its magnificent
fishing and bird life, got hammered by 40kt winds the last
36 hours as we came under Hexham shoal and inside the
Barrier Reef, and cleared in at Mackay. Then it was back to
the Whitsundays, Shaggies, Townsville and Zoe Bay. Turning
South, we spent some time at Airlie where I completed my
Briefers course. If you go up there to charter a boat this
year, it may be me that conducts your briefing and training.
We got back to the Coast in mid November, where I set
about earning some more dollars, antifouling, replacing
2 motors, and of course – earning some more money to
pay for it all. We are heading back over towards the end
of April, this time heading via New Caledonia to Vanuatu,
when we plan on reaching Espiritu Santo before turning
back once more in time to be at Shaggers at the end of
August.
Look forward to seeing you all out there in Yachting land,
doing what boats are supposed to be doing. After all, you
will never become a better sailor while tied up at the
Marina.
