CUARESMA Y PASCUA
CROSS - RESURRECTION - LEADS TO - THE GLORY OF
Ash Wednesday opens up the Great Ninety Days, the time in the Church year
when we spend 40 days preparing for Easter and 50 days celebrating the Easter
Festival. The center point of this liturgical time is the Paschal Triduum when we
experience the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus. The Triduum is one 3-day
celebration from the Opening Rite on Holy Thursday to the Final Blessing at the
Easter Vigil.

Lent (meaning spring) leads up to the Triduum, and gives us time to prepare our
hearts for Easter. During the Lenten season the Church asks us to meditate on the
meaning of our baptism, which, in fact, the Diocese of Tyler is focusing on
throughout this whole year. We need to reflect on the effects of baptism, the
symbols of water, oil, and light that speak of the mysteries of life and our promises
to reject evil and live in Christ. And especially in this season, the Church calls us to
do penance for the sins we have committed, and for the ways we have failed to
live our Baptismal Promises.

During Lent, the Church asks us to have a more somber celebration of the
Eucharistic liturgy, to refrain from Baptisms and urges restraint in the celebration of
Marriage. The Church also challenges all of us to “repent, and believe in the Gospel”
and to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Our parish has several
opportunities each week for Confessions as well as the usual Lenten Penance
Service to help you out.

The Cathedral Parish is blessed with a number of things we are offering during the
Lenten and Easter seasons to help you grow in your faith and journey to be closer
to Christ. Please us this booklet which outlines the various dates and times of events
and liturgical celebrations.

Be assured of my prayers for you as we begin these preparation days of Lent and
celebrate the Easter season.

Peace – Fr. Hank

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for
Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

For members of the Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 to 59.
When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that
together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding
upon members of the Catholic Church from age 14 onward.

The call of Christians to charity is a frequent theme of the Gospels. During Lent, we are asked
to focus more intently on "almsgiving," which means donating money or goods to the poor
and performing other acts of charity. As one of the three pillars of Lenten practice, almsgiving
is "a witness to fraternal charity" and “a work of justice pleasing to God." (CCC 2462)

Fast + Abstain + Give Alms

        Ayuna +Abstente + Da Limosna

(CCC 2462)

Ash Wednesday
                         Miércoles de Ceniza
The name dies cinerum (day of ashes) which it bears in the Roman Missal is found in
the earliest existing copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary and probably dates from at
least the eighth century. On this day, all the faithful are exhorted to approach the altar
and receive the sign of the cross on their forehead and the admonition: "Remember
that you are dust and to dust you will return." or “Repent and believe in the Gospel.”
