First Presbyterian Church Ninth at Washington, Michigan City, Indiana May 16, 2021 10:00 A.M. Birthday Offering and Woman of the Year THE WORSHIP OF OUR LORD † † † * Indicates those who are able, please stand “And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.” (1 John 5: 6b)
WE GATHER BEFORE GOD † WELCOME – WORSHIP – CELEBRATE – SERVE † PRELUDE “Prelude on ‘Swanwick’” D. Eliot WELCOME *CALL TO WORSHIP (Please quietly join in unison) One: I lift up my eyes to the hills-from where will my help come? All: My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. One: The Lord is your keeper. All: The Lord will keep you from all evil and will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forever. WE ARE RENEWED IN GOD’S GRACE CALL TO CONFESSION God is gracious and merciful and knows our needs even before they reach our lips. Still, we engage in confession, admitting to God all that rests uneasily in our hearts. Confident of God’s love, let us make our confession, first in silent prayers. PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Please quietly join in unison) Holy God, Creator of all that is, Donor of Grace, and Giver of Life: Hear our prayer. There are chasms in our lives, deep valleys that separate us from one another and from You. We confess that we have allowed those rifts to grow, for fear of admitting our part in the separation, for fear of being rejected when we reach out. You call us to a reconciled life, to healed relationships, to a wholeness with each other and with You. Mend us, we pray, and make us new creations through the power and love of Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. SILENT PRAYER OF CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE (Please quietly join in unison) Pastor: Friends, hear this Good News: the love of God is beyond measure, and you are included in that love. Know that you are forgiven and thus freed to love and serve. All: Alleluia! Amen. *HYMN #298 “There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy” (Please refrain from singing or hum along) PRESENTATION OF THE WOMAN OF THE YEAR Gloria Patri *SINGING GOD’S GLORY: “Glory to the Father” #567 Glory to the father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen, amen, amen. *SHARING THE PEACE OF GOD (Please quietly join in unison) Leader: Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us all forgive one another, and pass the peace of Christ to each other. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. People: And also with you!
(Worshippers are invited to turn to their neighbors, offer the greeting “The peace of Christ be with you”, and one may respond with the words, “And also with you.” Worshippers may also share a handshake, hug or other expression of Christ’s peace.) WE LISTEN FOR GOD’S WORD PASSING OF THE PEACE PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (Please quietly join in unison) Guide us, O God, by your Word and Spirit, that in your light we may see light, in your truth find freedom, and in your will discover your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON Isaiah 49:13 ANTHEM: “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” Unknown, Arr. Mark Hayes Presented by Lee C Meyer, piano SECOND SCRIPTURE LESSON 1 John 5:9-13 SERMON “Veritaserum” Reverend Dr. Ericka Kilbourne WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Please quietly join in unison) In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Prayer of Dedication Creator God, we thank you and praise your holy name. We have been blessed beyond measure and today we ask you to bless the gifts given in support of PW’s Birthday Offering. We ask a special blessing on the lives we touch-the women and their babies who are served by the new OB/GYN center in Malawi, creating new birthdays; Memorial Drive Ministries, where a new roof will provide a safe space for activities, support services, and five worshipping communities to grow and prosper. We celebrate with all the people who will be served and whose lives will be enriched through these gifts. In your Holy name we pray. Thank you, Penny Russell Soup Kitchen We have continued our food service throughout the pandemic, never missing a day! Thank you for your continued donations to the Soup Kitchen Fund. Our expenses have increased substantially, due to the cost of carryout boxes and bottled water. As always, more help is needed. Cooks and volunteers are working with masks, distancing, and all safety precautions, as they prepare about 140 to-go meals per day. If you can offer assistance please call Sue Ransom (219 809-8482). If you can't help on a Saturday, there are openings for volunteers every week day, so please HELP. Food of the Month Bottled Water The Northwest Indiana Mutual Aid Initiative will connect our donations with individuals at the downtown emergency soup kitchen here in Michigan City, as well as host "pop-up events" throughout the Spring and Summer in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties, where they will connect community members to these donations. Mission Messages, Spring Edition 2021 First Presbyterian has received many messages of gratitude for our congregation’s generosity during the COVID year. In the face of many challenges, our giving to a variety of mission projects remained robust. Donations were given to Sharing Meadows, the Soup Kitchen, Cathy Chang, SERRV, and the Presbyterian Giving Catalog, among others. Our ‘Links of Love’ chain is growing longer as we share God’s love worldwide. Pentecost Offering This special offering of the PC(USA) is a church-wide effort to support young people and inspire them to share their faith and unique gifts with the church and the world. Our share of this offering will help fund Dunebrook’s Safe Church training and certification for our youth workers and volunteers. And now introducing -------- The Food Task Force Much of our local mission efforts involve food - food preparation, food storage, food distribution, food delivery. This all adds up to a lot of packing, unpacking, carrying, lifting and just plain schlepping. Right now, all this work is being done by two or three people. They could really use some HELP! This would involve short-term commitments of an hour or two on any given project. Here are just a few of the tasks that need some helping hands: Receive and unload deliveries of food from Food Bank (every 4-6 weeks) and food rescue groups (usually weekly). Pack and deliver emergency food boxes to neighbors (as needed) Help our dear Blanche - “Carte Blanche” - fill Blanche’s shopping cart with surplus items from our pantry to share with members of our congregation (weekly) Identify and contact families in need, and offer help. If you can help fight hunger in our community, PLEASE sign up. Sheets will be posted in the church, or call Janice Casper (219 204-0494) or Debbie Langley (219 874-6326) for more information. Dorothy Bracken and Nancy Miller Homeless Shelter Join the fun; join the work on May 22! Volunteers from La Porte Presbyterian Church and elsewhere will be helping with outdoor cleanup and landscaping projects at the Interfaith Community PADS building at 1001 W 8th Street.
