THE WORSHIP OF GOD
                       SEPTEMBER 19, 2021
            THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
GATHERING
Song: “This Little Light of Mine”
Presentation of Student Bibles to Sixth Graders – Kelly Sasser
Prelude: “Sarabande” (Suite in G Minor) ..................................... George Frideric Handel
Welcome/Concerns and Celebrations – Esther Soud Parker

PRAISING GOD
Minister: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Lighting of the Christ Candle
Call to Worship
Minister: The heavens are telling of the glory of God;
People: And the firmament proclaims God’s handiwork.
Minister: Your law, O God, is perfect, reviving our souls,
People: And your commandments are sure, rejoicing our hearts.
Minister: Let our words and worship, the meditation of our hearts, be acceptable to
          you,
People: O God, our rock and redeemer! From Psalm 19
Hymn 323: “Wonderful Words of Life” .................................................... WORDS OF LIFE
Children are invited to walk behind the sound/video table
and meet Esther at the steps to the playground for Sunday School activities.

PRAYING TOGETHER
Minister: The Psalmist says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my
path.” Let us center ourselves in the light of God’s word, holding up our own words
and actions for inspection and reflection. We offer our prayers of confession, first
   in silence.
Prayers of Confession in Silence
Corporate Confession: O God, your word to us is the good news of Jesus Christ. Yet too
often our words to others are not good news. We use your gift of speech to boast
about our accomplishments. We use our words to speak harshly and to criticize. We
put down other people who are different. Forgive us, O Lord. Help us to choose our
words carefully and faithfully, and to use them for the good. May our words be like
fresh water from a spring that gives life, health, and joy. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon
   People: Thanks be to God.
Pastoral Prayer

TENDING TO THE WORD
Epistle: James 3:1-12
Minister: The Word of God for the People of Christ.
People: May the Spirit grant us understanding.
Sermon – Dorisanne Cooper (read by Kelly Sasser)
Silence
Interlude: “Lord God, Your Love Has Called Us Here” ................... John Bacchus Dykes

COMMITTING OUR LIVES IN FAITH
Invitation
Hymn: “O Lord, May All We Say and Do”............................................... TALLIS’ CANON
                                  Text by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette
O Lord, may all we say and do Just as a spark can start a fire,
    reflect the faith we have in you;              our words can damage or inspire;
for faith is meant to change the way we pray for wisdom from above
we live our lives from day to day. to speak and act in gentle love.

Benediction
Carrying the Light into the World
Postlude: “Passacaille” (Suite in G Minor) ................................... George Frideric Handel

As you depart, you are invited to place an offering in the basket on the worship table
                         or give online at www.wattsstreet.org.
