Sunday 21st March 2021 Fifth Sunday of Lent Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51: 10
Welcome Welcome to this week’s Gazette and thank you Alison for making it so good to read and giving us so much information. I looked at the set readings for today, and found something so familiar. Hang on – I’ve read this recently! In fact, I’ve read it really carefully, spent time on it and discussed it with others! Yes, it’s Psalm 51 – and it was the subject of one of the Lent meetings. And it is the Psalm specially chosen to be used today ☺ Those who have been coming, by Zoom, to the Lent Course meetings will know that for five weeks during Lent the subject is ‘Experiencing God’s Love through the psalms’. The title for the second week was ‘Washed’ (Psalm 51). The psalmist asks to be forgiven and washed from his sins, and he had been really sinful before writing this psalm. He says ‘I have done evil in your sight O God, and you are right to pass judgment on me. Wash me through and through from my iniquity, and from my sins. Please make me clean, wash me and I shall be whiter than snow’. We were asked at that Lent meeting to think of a time when we had been really dirty. What had it been like to step into a shower and feel all the dirt washing away? I thought of a time when all our family were on the canal, coming in to moor, one steering and the others of us jumping off or throwing ropes, forgetting the golden rule, ‘never leave Jonathan aged around 2yrs, on his own’. I saw him trying to get off the boat and follow us, reached out for him from the bank and in we both went! It was a particularly muddy, red mud place and we were drenched in it. I have never forgotten – what to do first to rid ourselves of this mud? At the Lent Course one of the things we were told we should pray for is a deeper understanding of ourselves to see the areas in our lives which need to be washed – what to do first to rid ourselves of what is wrong. Yet we go on sinning and having to come back to be washed again and it is easy to take for granted God’s cleansing from sin as an automatic right. We must always remember that it is only because of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross that we can be forgiven. We can be washed and made clean again. A direct quote from Steven Croft’s Lent course: ‘Imagine if you can, the Christian faith without the grace of being washed and forgiven. It is impossible. No family or friendship can survive for long without the capacity to forgive and be forgiven. No Christian journey can last long without it either.’ Marjorie Morgan – Lay Minister 1
A prayer in our current situation From the rising of the sun to its setting we praise your name, O Lord; may your promise to raise the poor from the dust and turn the fortunes of the needy upside down be fulfilled in our time also, as it was in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen First Reading – Hebrews 5: 5-10 5 So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’; 6as he says also in another place, ‘You are a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchizedek.’ 7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; 9and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Gospel Reading – John 12: 20-33 20 Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ 22Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. 27‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—“Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’ 29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to him.’ 30Jesus answered, ‘This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. 31Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ 33He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. 2
