The Gray Hawk, January 20201 Page 3 Greetings from the UIRA President, 1/2021 Happy New Year!! If you are like me, you are probably looking forward to 2021 and ready to leave 2020 behind. I hope that we can begin to get back to some semblance of ‘normal’ this coming year. Seeing COVID vaccines rolling out as I write this is an uplifting sight. Maybe by this time next year we will be able to connect in person, eat out safely, and return to our churches, gyms, coffee shops, and other gathering places. I, for one, am really ready to get out of my cocoon. Thanks to the hard work of the program committee, we have some interesting and timely programs coming up in the next few months. Since we are offering programs via Zoom this year, I hope you will take advantage of them as a way to buffer the winter doldrums. Please review the offerings noted elsewhere in this edition of the Gray Hawk. I would also like to draw your attention to the call for nominations for our volunteer service awards. As you know, each year we make two awards--one for service to the community at large and one for service to the university. Think of your friends and colleagues, and consider nominating one of them for one of these awards. Details on how to make a nomination are found in another column in the Gray Hawk. Finally, thanks to all who work to make UIRA special, and all who contribute their time and talents to our committees and who attend our programs. I hope everyone has a healthy and happy 2021. ~ Sam Cochran Senior College The Senior College Committee has again planned an interesting array of courses for the spring semester via Zoom. Course descriptions will be available on Monday, January 4, at www.foriowa.org/senior-college/. Online registration begins at 9 a.m. on Monday, January 11. Photo Contest Reminder Photos are due January 21, 2021. All rules can be found in the November 2020 Gray Hawk newsletter and on the website.
The Gray Hawk, January 20201 Page 4 Emeritus Faculty Council Lecture A Rough Diamond: F. Mason Sones and the Discovery of Selective Coronary Arteriography Allyn Mark, M.D., Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine, Carver College of Medicine Thursday, January 21, 4 p.m. Please join us on Zoom: https://uiowa.zoom.us/j/93469758146? pwd=V3JyR0gwcTV0b2ZKQ2JRRStIMVBvQT09 In the mid-20th century, three words were frequently used to describe coronary artery thrombosis and heart attacks: unpredictable, unpreventable and untreatable. Allyn Mark Over the next half century, innovative, iconoclastic, charismatic, and in two instances tragic, physicians led the way to the discovery and development of coronary arteriography, coronary artery bypass surgery, balloon coronary angioplasty, and coronary stents that transformed the diagnosis and treatment of coronary disease. In a new book titled Pioneers Who Transformed Coronary Disease: From Eisenhower’s Heart Attack to Clinton’s Coronary Surgery and Stents, Allyn Mark tells the personal stories of the physicians who made these discoveries. The lecture will focus on F. Mason Sones, who in 1958 serendipitously discovered and developed selective coronary arteriography to visualize the coronary arteries, work considered by many to be the most important discovery in 20th century cardiology. UIRA Special Interest Groups The Gray Hawk Writers have been meeting fortnightly since April 1999 and continues to meet every two weeks via Zoom. We read aloud what we have written, encourage one another, and offer friendly critique. In 2014 we published an anthology, Yesterdays. Our storytelling and writing styles are quite diverse; there are many pathways that can be followed when writing. Visit us as a guest; you may decide you would like to join the group. Everyone has a story to tell. Email the chair of the group Doug Paul at DougPaul@harvestpreserve.org UIRA Program Recordings Zoom recordings of current UIRA programs are posted on the website under Programs and Events. Most of those from the previous calendar year are accessible at the bottom of that page, under “Archives”; just click the 2019-2020 hotlink.
