Smith Scholarship Program Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Zeta Delta Sigma Alumni Chapter will award five $1,000 scholarships to college-bound high school seniors demonstrating the highest ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHO IS PHI BETA SIGMA? Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated was founded by A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown on January 9, 1914, at Howard University in Washington, DC. It is one of the ‘Divine Nine’ historically African American fraternities and sororities. WHO IS ZETA DELTA SIGMA? The Zeta Delta Sigma Alumni Chapter (ZDS) was chartered in 1962 and based in Hampton, Virginia. The chapter comprises professionals across various industries, including aerospace, education, government, logistics, and the armed forces. WHO IS CRAWFORD W. SMITH? Brother Crawford W. Smith is one of Zeta Delta Sigma Chapter’s charter members. He enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the Newport News School District, serving as the first African American Director of Personnel. WHO MAY APPLY? ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS? The scholarship competition is open to any male high school senior who will attend a four-year college or university. The scholarship does not require a minimum grade point average. However, we hope you will identify students from disadvantaged backgrounds and encourage them to apply. IS THIS SCHOLARSHIP LIMITED TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS? NO. Our fraternity prides itself on being known as the INCLUSIVE ‘we,’ not the exclusive ‘we.’ Thus, we welcome all applicants of diverse backgrounds and social strata. WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO APPLY? To get started, we have enclosed an application form. In addition, students must submit a 500-word essay explaining their participation in a recent (within the last calendar year) community service project and how it impacted themselves and zdseducation@gmail.com
3 the people they served. The Education Committee will evaluate the essays on their content and will make recommendations for awards. WHEN IS THE DEADLINE? The scholarship window will be from January 1-March 31, 2023. We will inform the five winners by April 30, 2023. We ask that you provide us with the date of your school’s senior/award night, so a representative of ZDS may be present to acknowledge the awardee. MY STUDENT IS AMONG THE WINNERS. WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS? First of all, congratulations! After the notification of winners, we will provide them with additional documents and release forms. Winners must submit proof of enrollment before the disbursing of any winnings. WHAT ARE THE OBLIGATIONS OF THE WINNERS? Aside from submitting proof of college enrollment, there are no obligations for applying for or accepting the award. Furthermore, please note that the winners may need to complete a release form for promotional purposes only; the form is not required to receive the scholarship. Applicants and winners are not considered members of Phi Beta Sigma or ZDS and may not represent themselves as such. WHO MAY I CONTACT FOR MORE INFORMATION? For more information on the Crawford W. 6 ESSAY TOPIC: Please explain your contribution to the service activity listed above and how your participation a) provided a tangible benefit to the community and b) challenged your perspective on the group(s) affected. It is imperative that you make a note of the following criteria: • The essay must fall between 500-750 words. • The essay must be double-spaced and written in Times New Roman with a 12-point font. • Essays must be either a .pdf or Word document. Please ensure that pages 4 and 5 of this document accompany your entry. • Submissions will be accepted at zdseducation@gmail.com until March 31, 2023.
